Please help my King is sick!! My yorkie "King" is 4 1/2 years old and weighs about 7 lbs. He is the light of our life and has been an angel for our family. For the last few weeks he would gag a little and vomit a little bit of bile, but there was no other issues, behavioral or otherwise. Last week he started vomiting even more but this time he was also shaking constantly. He has no interest in eating, not his food, not even his 'treats'. We took him to the local vet at the end of last week after I read some posts on Yorkie Talk and worried it may be pancreatitis. The vet ruled it out due to regular white blood cell counts and his other work upss. His globulin levels were the only things that were off. The vet gave us 'Cerenia' to stop his vomiting and also a liquid medication to fight worms if he may have some, although there was none showing. He was at a loss and said to take him home, medicate him and watch over him. This was a $500 bill. We bought Royal Canin food for Yorkies while there and strayed away from any treats until he gets better. He seemed to be getting better but then on Tuesday he began shaking again, he stopped eating, he would walk about two feet, sit down, shake and lean, then get up, walk about two feet, sit down and do it again. He wont eat but he is drinking an entire bowl of water about 2-3 times a day, then he spits up some of the water. His stomach is making noises that I can hear and he shakes when it is grumbling. I am worried and was wondering if anyone has dealt with something like this before . He is getting worse and keeps shaking. If you have any ideas for me, please let me know! |
I would take him back to the vet and get a diagnosis! If your vet is unable to get him diagnosed, do you have a vet school around you that he can refer you to? There is definately somewthing wrong, and he needs to be treated...what your vet is doing now is treating the symptoms, and you really need to find out what is causing the symptoms and treat the process as well. Is there a vet school around you....they have all the specialists right there and you can get seen by an internist and then go in the right direction from there. Is he pooping?? Is his stomach bloated? Did your vet do abdominal xrays? |
I would take him back to the vet |
Big King, still sick... So, I thought he may be doing better, during the night he ate a little meat but then started shaking again, drank a whole bowl of water and then after about 3 hours threw up the meat undigested. I am wondering if he has a bowel obstruction... We originally took him to the Banfield Pet Hospital here in Spokane, but I didn't feel like they were really serious about helping him, I am looking for someone else to see him. Have any of you dealt with a bowel obstruction, or do you have any ideas... he is drinking and after he throws up he is playful and no longer so lethargic... once he eats he gets sick and changes to a sad sad baby... I am going to try to find a place now |
I would find a vet soon. This is nothing to mess with. Good luck and keep us posted |

Kings going in now! Hi there, thank you all so much. It's easy to talk yourself out of something because you want it to be an easy solution but I decided to take him to a different pet hospital right now. We are going in now and i will post a reply once I get some answers! Thanks everyone! |
Stay away from Banfield , they charge to cut pills:rolleyes: You aren't that far from WSU, if you don't get satisfaction from the new vet I would head to WSU. |
Great news. |
I have never been impressed with Banfield....I have known several people that have worked for a couple different sites....THEY wouldnt take their OWN pets there....that speaks volumes to me....WSU is where I would be headed.. |
Praying for your King:hands: It does sound like an obstruction. Very serious, so I'm glad that you are taking him to another vet. I wouldn't take a stuffed dog to Banfield, just my opinion. |
prayers for your king..i hope you can get a diagnosis and resolve the issue. |
What kind of treats does he get? Many 'dental' products are known to cause blockages.... |
OKAY!! Found a GREAT vet clinic. The Garland Avenue Vet Clinic was so incredible. I told them that I had a limited amount of funds but was terrified for King. The doctor let me hold him while she inspected him, she repeated the blood work and found some differences as well as did x-rays on him. His spleen is swollen and there is something in his intestinal tract but they are still not sure if it is a blockage. Instead she is sending it to a radiologist to interpret the x-rays and possibly do a barium test before they do anything invasive. She gave me ulcer medication and even found out that the antibiotic shot that Banfield said they gave him, wasn't given! I am so happy I went there and they worked all that into my budget and he came out happy and loving like his old self. I am so glad I went and I finally feel there is a vet in my corner that cares about my dog. Anyone in the Spokane area, GO TO THE GARLAND CLINIC. They are excellent with a great bedside manner! Thanks to all of you for your support and I will keep you updated with what we find out! His protein levels were very high, his globulin levels were too high... they think maybe he worried himself into an ulcer. Thanks! |
Please take him to another Vet ASAP. I am worried this may need attention at once. |
Good to hear you took him to another vet. I've never been impressed with Banfield either. |
I am glad you took him to another vet. Please keep us updated with the results of the tests |
Please keep us updated |
So glad to hear you took King to another Vet. Please keep us updated on him. I will continue prayers for him. |
Just seeing this. Glad you went to another vet...I have heard far too many negative stories about Banfield. Hope that King is doing better now! |
I'm glad you took him somewhere else. I'm glad that you are happy with your new vet. You aren't far from us, we are from the Tri-Cities... You don't see many Washingontonians on here. If he continues to have problems, I would get him to Pullman. Good luck! I hope he starts feeling better soon. |
So happy you got him to another vet...pls keep us posted on what you find out! Saying prayers for King |
He is like a different dog tonight. He isn't shaking and although he is tired, it's because he was awake all night shaking and whining. I thank you all for your prayers and I am so thankful for this website. Several times I have had questions and issues about things for king and found the answers here from other Yorkie lovers. What a cool forum. Just as a question, what do you recommend or what do you feed your Yorkies? King was on a store bought hard food but hasn't ever really eaten it well. After all of this I began to give him Royal Canin "Yorkie Formula" but he just looks at me like I am crazy. Anyone have any recommendations... he loves carrot pieces but is pretty picky overall. Thanks! |
My prayers for your precious Yorkie. I am so sorry you had to experience Banfield. I am glad you found a good vet you can trust. Keep us posted as I will be waiting to hear good news. We all must be very careful with the chew type bones we give our dogs. Some of those pieces can break off and get lodged. The greenies are not good for them. Be very careful of any rawhide stuff. I will not give my JoJo that as he can tear anything up in a heartbeat and swallow it. Oh Lord please help little King to get better and be back to his sweet playful self soon! |
A lot of yorkies are notoriously picky eaters. It's hard to find a food they like, esp if you keep switching around, they learn that they can refuse food for a bit and then maybe get something better. I am guilty of doing this when Uni was young. |

Glad that King is doing better! :) |
So glad you found a good vet. Hoping they get him feeling like brand new :) |
So this morning the vet called. She said that the radiologist overlooked the film and that there seems to be no blockage but with the protein levels so high and his vomiting ongoing and his swollen spleen that there is a good chance he has cancer. They want to do an ultrasound and recheck the proteins. I thought he was getting better and now I have to find a way to tell my mom. King is like a son to her and how do you tell someone that kind of news. Please pray for him, he is the most incredible little guy ever and deserves such a wonderful life. I will keep you updated! |
