| Buddy's Limping Our 1-year-old Yorkie, Buddy, came in from outside last night and wouldn't put any weight on his back left leg. I go out with him and other than running crazy in the back yard, he didn't have any unknown injuries. The vet had said when we first got him (about 4 months ago) that he had a problem with his knee popping out of socket. He's contained today while I'm at work, but will be taking him to the vet this evening if he's still limping. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? (He's not yelping in pain.) |

| What the vet described to you is a luxating patella....and he will grade it for you, 1-4, with 4 being the most severe....a 4 will definately require surgery later down the road...a 1 can probably be managed without surgical intervention...some Cosequin, etc can help with cartilidge building, minor pain, etc....a 2 may not even need surgery. A 3 will probably need surgery as he gets older, as it will start to be a pain issue for him...dont be letting him jump around on and off furniture, running agility around the back yard, anything that you figure is going to put excess stress and torque on those joints, as that will worsen the condition. |

| At only 1 year old, it's going to be really hard to keep him from jumping off of the couch, etc. Plus, he just LOVES to run in the back yard. But, whatever it takes! I have him in a second session of obedience training, but we may have to sit out this week. I'll post updates! |

| UPDATE: I ended up not taking Buddy to the vet as he was not limping when I got home from work. I will be watching him closely and try to keep him from jumping off the bed and couch and no mad runs through the back yard. I'd like to start him on some Cosiquin for his joints, but don't know how much to give him. He's about 5 lbs. Can you buy it at the pet store or do you have to get it from the vet? |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Keep an eye out on it. My Gizmo had to have surgery on both back legs. Then, they had to do a second surgery on one. This all happened when she was about a year old. Hopefully, you wont have to go thru this. Keep us updated.

| Definitely keep an eye on him. My male has the lowest form of LP and as long as we don't let him get fat, jump off of the bed/couch etc he shouldn't ever need surgery. Try to keep your little guy from doing those things to injure himself further.

| You really do need to go back to your vet so he can grade your babies LP as it can be very painful if it's severe. |

| my vet told me my little guy has his knee sockets popping out from time to time too and that if I see him limping it's prob due to that, she made it seem like it wasn't too serious but you should confirm that with your vet
