Only 16 weeks old and CHF already?!?! Help! Hi I posted another forum earlier asking about heart murmurs but not my little Maggie is bloated really bad and having a hard time breathing. She won't play at all and just sleeps and waddles around VERY slowly. Just got home from the vet and they did bloodwork and xrays. They said her belly is filled with fluid and it it probably from congestive heart failure at an early age. She said that it is critical and made me an appointment at a cardiologist for today. I have to drive a few hrs to get there so I figured I would see if anyone had any advice on what to expect. My vet said the prognosis probably won't be good. I'm sooooooooooooo upset. I would appreciate any advice or comments:((((( |
i have no experience with this but i wanted to say im sorry maggie and you are having to deal with this. i will keep your maggie in my prayers for the best outcome. |
Sorry, I'm no help either, but wanted to wish you and Maggie well. I really hope that the specialist can do something to help her. There must be medication that would help with the fluid. Poor baby!!! |
Oh, and please let the breeder know what's going on. Her condition could turn out to be congenital, and if so the breeder needs to step up for you and the puppy, and also rethink her breeding pairs. |
Prayer"s for maggie. Sorry I'm no help either. But will be keeping You and Maggie in my Prayer's.Did you get in touch with her breeder? Just thinking she might want to know and maybe help with expensives. It is so sad when these little ones are sick.Sending well wishes for Maggie. Anne/Luci:animal-pa |

Oh I let her know as soon as I found out she had a murmur and she was of not help at all. She said "Oh I'm sorry that's never happened before. I'll get my vet to check out the parents." And that was the end of it. I signed a paper saying I would take her within 2 days to a vet and I waited 5 because that's when her next shots were due. She still didn't offer anything whatsoever!! |
The breeder is of absolutley no help. I should have done alot more research on this lady before buying a puppy and getting attched |
And Thank you everyone for all the prayers!!! Will keep u posted after the cardiologist visit |
I am very sorry for your situation. Poor little Maggie. I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. |
Im sorry Im keeping little Maggie in my prayers and hugs to you |
We are praying for Maggie! |
Positive thoughts and prayers for wee Maggie. The echocardiogram(which may be suggested to be done by the cardiologist), will help her/him, ascertain what type of heart problem exists, the seriousness of the condition, and what your treatment options are. Heart conditions experienced this young are often hereditary in nature, and your cardiologist will tell you if the condition your pup is suffering from has a hereditary one. If so look up puppy lemon laws in your state, and see if you can hold this breeder to the letter of the law. If she doesn't offer emotional and financial support, then please review her on here, as well as a whole host of other sites. Good breeders as you know will stand behind their puppies and even their adult dogs, and offer both emotional, knowledge, and where applicable financial support. Prayers and positive thoughts coming your way |
Praying for Maggie and you... hope things go well... and do notify the breeder ... |
Im so sorry. I can see in your words that you are in so much pain. You are doing right to take sweet Maggie to the specialist. You are such a good fur mommy. I will pray for a positive outcome. By the way, Gemy gave you some excellent advice. Keep us posted, and we'll be here praying. Hugs |
We are on the way now. Yeah I had an app for an echo to be done next month because I am low on money. I have had her 5 weeks and already spent $1500. This visit is anywhere from $400-600 I was told. My vet had said there is no need to rush it since she was showing no signs of anything yet so I was trying to wait to keep from using my credit card. But just overnight it hit her I guess and she took a major turn for the worst. I don't have my hopes up too high going in and am already trying to prepare myself for having to put her to sleep. Thanks everyone and I will keep u updated |
And I checked and haven't found any lemon laws in Georgia :( |

At the tender age of 16 weeks, you can resat assured this is congenital. That is useless information, if you have a breeder that could care less, and you have no health guarantee. Did you at least have a vet check within 48 hours of purchase, to see if the baby was healthy? You need to broadcast her name and her business all over this site, if she once again tells you she will not help with this situation....you need to tell her if she is not willing to stand by that puppy and at least refund your money if that babies dies, or pick up the costs of diagnostic testing to determine exactly what is wrong with this baby, you are going to do everything in your power to ruin her name in the dog breeding business world......this is sooooo tragic......my prayers for you and the innocent little puppy, who did not ask to be brought into this world....this woman should suffer as much as this baby is suffering..... |
Praying for little Maggie. I did have one that had CHF and lived to be 15. She was on lasic for the fluid build up and a med for her heart. Just try to keep believing the positive. I know its hard but prayer changes things and we have all seen that on this forum time and time again. God bless you and little Maggie. |
Although there is no "Lemon Law" in Georgia, you may have recourse through the Department of Agriculture. Animal Protection FAQs - Ga Dept of Agriculture |
I have a Yorkie who presented with this at 14 wks (around). I am not one to keep mental notes when I'm going through things- I choose to keep moving forward and put my faith and trust in the Drs and the big guy above! I will tell you this, a cardiologist will tell you what the issue is, and it could be one of several conditions, so I won't venture to guess. Once your cardiologist does his tests and exams you will know how to proceed, I promise. You, like me, want to do whats best for the pup. I will tell you that my baby is now 9 mos. and has had a few close calls recently, but the cardiologist still thinks she may outgrow it, unfortunately her litter mate (sister) did not and passed away not to long ago...so each case is definitely different. I believe she is with me for a reason, and regardless of anything long time or short time I am so glad I have her... I wish you luck and keep us posted and when you get the results let us know, we will be here for you. Please, do tell us the name of your breeder, or pm me. |
I am so so sorry this is happening to poor Maggie. Prayers for you both. Healing prayers for her and wisdom and peace for you. |
I had my matriarch that lived to the ripe old age of 16...almost made her 17th birthday.....but she did not get develop CHF until she was 9...she went on Lasix and Vasotec and she did fine for another 8 years.... |
I have no experience of this but I will keep you in my thoughts. I know what it is like to have a sick furbaby and its the worst feeling in the world when you can't do anything. Keep strong xxx |
She had a malformed tricuspid valve and her right atrium is 3 times larger than the left and also a little narrowing in her pulmonary valve. Nothing really gonna help. He said its very very rare in a yorkie. Gonna try a fluid pill for a few days just to see if any improvement but that's just to help her live longer. He said could b 6 months could b a year but a year was being generous:( Please keep us in your prayers. I may have to put her to sleep sooner if nothing changes though:( |
I am sooooo sorry.....I was fearful of this........what a horrible thing to happen to this poor little girl, and for you to have to endure this emotional devastation. I think you need to contact the breeder and tell her what has happened, see what she says, and then have that "Come to Jesus Meeting" with her...let her know what you intend to do (plaster her name and the name of her breeding business all over every form of social media you can get your hands on...FB, Tweeter, etc., because of her refusal to stand by her puppy)....you are going to do your dead level best to ruin her so that some other poor, unsuspecting soul does not get taken for a ride. ANY breeder can have a pup with a congenital malformation of some kind....IT IS WHAT THAT BREEDER DOES IN THE FACE OF THAT UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCE, THAT DETERMINES IF THEY ARE WORTH A PLUG NICKLE. |
I am so very sorry that you and your baby are going through this. |
Thanks yorkiemom1 and I totally agree with you. I have contacted her and no response so far. But I feel that I am at fault some because I signed a paper saying I would take her to the vet within 2 days. The next day was July 4 so my vet was closed and she was due for her next shots about 4 or 5 days later so I made the mistake of waiting. But even in those few days I had gotten so attached to her I would have hate to give her up. But I feel that any reputable breeder would find it in there heart to offer me my money back just to help a little with the cost. But when i informed her of the heart murmur she just said thanks for letting her know and she would get her dogs checked. I'm just gonna do what I can I guess and make what little time left Maggie has the best I can:( |
I am so sorry. I will keep you and your little Maggie in my thoughts and prayers. |
I am so sorry about your baby. One of my little girls developed CHF when she was nine. The breeder is responsible for this. A 48-hour health guarantee is ridiculous, and although you would have had some more recourse if you had gone to the vet sooner, you are not at fault. A responsible and reputable breeder should stand behind all of these precious babies. I am heartbroken that you and your baby have to go through this. She left an imprint on your heart as soon as you got her, and that will last forever. |
I am in tears reading this. This is so sad and you are trying everything to save your little baby. That breeder is awful and you think she would have a heart and help you out. My prayers are for you and Maggie. Susan |
