New Owner, Puppy sick :cry:I purchased a yorkie from what I thought was a reputable breader who was recommended to me now I'm not so sure.... Kuma is 8 wks old and weighs approx 1pd. I picked up Kuma last Sunday the 29th. Realized on Monday he had fleas...washed with Dawn...fleas are gone. The last two days he seemed to be sleeping alot. Early this morning his poop changed from hard dark brown poop to light brown runny and now is mostly mucus tinged with a little blood. He doesn't seem to be eating or drinking much and I am very concerned:( I also noticed three little spots on his tummy tonight, one of them is a little raw (is that from the fleas that he had??) He was walking funny on and off tonight ...can't think of another way to explain it but like he was trying to keep from pooping as he walked.. I have tried contacting the breeder and she will not answer my calls/texts. I don't have any experience with a dog this young or this small but I am determined to give him a better life that what I know believe he came from :( He has an appointment tuesday for his next round of vaccines but I don't think I should wait until then.... Any info would be appreciated... is this normal after weaning (the poop changing) I don't know if he is pooping a bit of blood or it's from having such hard poop before. Very worried :( |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am so sorry your pup is sick. You need to have a vet check the pup as soon as possible, and take a sample of his stool in a plastic bag if you can. One of my pups had the same symptoms, and it was coccidia, which is somewhat common, and sometimes comes on when the pup is stressed, such as going to a new home. This is serious, but treatable with proper medication, but don't wait around, the little pups can go down really fast. Your pup could also be experiencing hypoglycemia if he is not eating regularly, which would explain excessive sleeping and walking wobbly. You need to get him to an ER vet immediately. You need to learn how to identify and treat hypoglycemia, as it can cause severe damage or death. A reputable breeder doesn't let pups go to their new home until 12 weeks, and for the very tiny ones, even longer. Many people don't know this until they find themselves in a situation like you. Please please get this pup to a vet asap, and do post updates when you can. I'm praying for his recovery. |
You should get Nutri-cal for Puppies at the pet store, and give him a little to stabilize blood sugar & supplement when he is not eating. What are you feeding him? You might encourage him to eat by feeding small amts. of boiled chicken breast, finely diced, or supplement with goats milk (available in cans at grocery store, but dilute 1/2 with water.) He must eat, and must have water or will get dehydrated. Good luck. |
when I read this 2 things came to mind hypoglycemia, or parvo, I hope you get this little guy to the vet and I hope he gets better. |
Please get this little one to the vet . Good luck. |

8 weeks old is way too young, this baby should have stayed with it's Mom until it was 12 weeks old. |
Welcome to YT. Your baby needs to see a vet. I would get the pup in as soon as possible. The breeder should not have let the pup go at that age. I'm sorry you are having to deal with it but I would stop contacting her and see a vet. Hope your baby gets well soon. |
welcome to YT and congrats on your new furbaby...As everyone said here...he NEEDS to be seen by a vet...NOW! He is a very tiny little guy and these little ones can go down very quickly. I am going through poop issues with all 3 of mine right now, They all had the same type poop you are describing, Bentley was the only one with blood in his. They ALL have Giardia and bacteria in their intestines. You really can't wait to get him to the vets You don't want him to dehydrate either. PLEASE let us know how he is doing. Good thoughts going out to you |
Update! Thank you so much for all the replies! We were first in line at the vet at 8am! He does have coccidia and a double ear infection :( they tested for parvo and that was negative thank goodness! Great vet (also a yorkie owner!) and two antibiotics later I think he is on the mend. I also purchased the nutri-cal for him :) He is on Royal Canin yorkie puppy, the vet suggested wetting it and that has worked, he is eating! I am so thankful that I found these forums, thank you thank you thank you! Kuma and I are off to take a nap....:dogzzz: |

I am glad he is on the mend. Keep us posted on his progress |
So glad that your baby is on the mend. Hope both of you get lots of rest and that he gets to where he is ready to play again. |
I am SO glad to hear you got Kuma in right away, got diagnosed, and are treating him. I hope he makes a full recovery, and has good health from here on. One thing you will find about YorkieTalk, is that we are passionate about our doggies, and we care deeply about each others too. I had a hard time sleeping last night worrying about your little Kuma, and prayed you'd get him in quickly. So when I woke this morning to see your update I was so relieved. Being tiny and young, adds a little extra responsibility to you, but it looks like you are on it, and know the importance of seeing a vet quickly when things start going wrong. Too often people wait and watch, and can lose their little ones. We'll look forward to hearing more about him, and watching him grow up :D |
Good news! I felt so bad for little Kuma when I read this thread. You're really lucky that your vet is a Yorkie owner. It's hard to find a good vet familiar with small breeds. Good luck with your new baby & welcome to YT! Quote:

Good news! Hope your baby is better soon. |
Kuma :-) Hi. So glad you asked for help here, took the advice of the posters, took your baby to the vet pronto and now she is diagnosed and on the mend. YEH!!! Hoping your baby gets well very soon and that you feel better too. Very scary for a new pup mom. She is very small and needed a great mom like you to nurture and love her. We would love to see pics of her when she is better, she must be so cute. |
So glad that you got Kuma into the Vet this morning. Now that he is being treated I hope he will start feeling better soon. |
Ooops! Sorry Kuma you are a boy not a girl! My bad! |
Glad to hear it wasn't anything serious and she is being treated! |
I'm very glad to hear that you took your puppy so quickly to the vet and that he's doing better. This is wonderful news. |
Welcome to YT! I'm thrilled you sought advice on here and took the advice given. I have to admit I was worried about your little guy. I'm happy he is on the mend. Post some pics please, we love pics here. Looking forward to watching your baby grow up. |

You can also take the Royal Canin kibble and put it in a grinder and grind it up, not as fne as a powder, but into course consistancy like short grain rice...or kernals of corn.....They get more bang for their buck if they can get smaller pieces at a time....I use a coffee grinder to pulverize the kibble ito tiny little pieces....tiny little babies get tired out trying to chew up evenlittle kibble....if you are softening it in water, you wont need to do this...but later, when he gets older, you can always pulverize the kibble for him to manage easier....I am so happy he is doing well for you now...just remember, diarrhea and vomiting for over 24 hours maximum....to the vet ASAP, without delay, as these little ones can go down and die very quickly. Any lethargy, or "drukenness behavior", staggering, even cold ears...all indicitive of low blood sugar...give the NutraCal immediately. |
This is great news! I am so glad he is on the road to recovery. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Glad to hear your little one is doing better. Would love to see pictures. :) |
Another Update I gave him his second dose of antibiotics this morning, they gave him a load dose at the vet yesterday. He is definately feeling better and back to his playful self :) I had been mixing his kibble with water but last night I got a few and was feeding him one at a time to see if he would take them and he did! So today all his feedings were dry and he gobbled them right up. His poop was solid this morning and afternoon, however this evening it has gotten a little runny again.... How long before that will taper off? I am making sure he has clean and dry bedding, keeping his dishes and crate clean, is there anything else specific I need to do so that he doesn't get it again? |
Glad to hear your pups is doing better. At least the lesson learn is...reputable breeders don't let pups go before 12 weeks... To bad there isn't way to give them a bad review??? Webpage or buyers ad?? |

Parvo is passed by contact with fecal matter, so you want to clean any areas he pottied. Often the mommy dog has it, but has no symptoms, and babies get it when nursing (or so I've heard). It should resolve with a full course of the meds, and I can't remember exactly, but seems like it was a week of liquid Albon for my Meika. I also had to treat my other pup Tiki who was 3 months older, just as a precaution. Glad he's eating better. Always remember that your prompt action in getting him into the vet could have made the difference in saving his life. Since you say you have little experience with dogs this young and this small, this is crucial. The lesson here is always be safe rather than sorry. Enjoy your little one.:D |
Kuma So glad he is responding to treatment and eating better. It may take some time for him to get his tum completely better, and the antibiotics may also make for softer stools. You are doing all the right things and he will be fine in no time. By the way I thought he had Coccidia NOT Parvo? Hope he does have the lesser of two evils, but wish he had neither poor little baby. Get well soon Kuma so you and mommy can have fun. |

He did not have Parvo, that was the first thing they tested him for. He has coccidia. I've read what I can online about it, I just want to make sure I'm doing what I can so that he doesn't get it again. It looks like he definately had it when I got him and would have had it regardless what age I brought him home :( I\'m just so paranoid that we won\'t get rid of it or he will get it again. I\'m going through puppy pads like crazy since everytime he poops the whole pad goes in the trash and I\'ve been wiping down his kennel, washing his bedding and bowls and toys...I just feel so bad that he still has the runs, especially after it seemed to be getting better this morning :-/ |
Question What other steps should I be following to disinfect to make sure the coccidia germs aren\'t left anywhere? So far I am cleaning out his crate several times a day, washing his dishes and toys and bedding, as soon as a he poops on a puppy pad I put them in the trash. Does Lysol work against this? At this point because he is so small and has only had one set of shots we do not take him in the yard to potty. I take him out to our back screened concrete porch and he goes on the potty pad really good but geesh are we going through those things! What is the best way to keep the concrete disinfected? |
This site has a lot of information about coccidia. They say to clean concrete with 10% amonia solution. dottiesyrky, I mistakenly referred to parvo in my previous post, but it is in fact coccidia. Thank goodness, this is much less harmful. Get Well soon little Kuma :getwell: |
