I have a 9 year old yorkie that is in early kidney failure and need advice

I had a Yorkie who at the age of 6 years developed a severe encephalitis - a kajillion dollars and tests later she did survive, however the high doses of medication that probably saved her life killed her renal system.

She lived a pretty active life for 6 more years, much to everyone's surprise . I did feed her KD, but eventually added home made recipes that the vet gave me.

I have the recipes for canine restricted protein diet and canine ultra low protein diet and would be glad to share them if you are interested.

Canine Restricted Protein Diet

1/4 lb ground beef (do not usse lean ground chuck)
2 cups cooked white rice without salt
1 hard cooked egg, finely chopped
3 slices white bread, crumbled
1 t (5 grams) calcium caarbonate

Also add a balanced suplement which fulfills the minimym daily requirements for all vitamins and trace minerals.

Cook beef in skillet, stirring until lightly browned stir in remaining ingrediences and mix well. This mixture is somewhat dry and its palatability can be improved by adding a little water (not milk). Keep covered in the frigerator. Yield 1 1/4 pounds.

Analysis:
Protien 6.9%
Fat 5.5%
Carbohydrate 21.1%
Moisture 65%

Supplies 17% protien calories, 30% fat calories, and 53% carbohydrate calories.


Directions:
Feed sufficient amount to maintain normal body weight.

5# dog = 1/4 lb daily
10# = 1/2 lb daily
20# = 1 lb daily

Canine Ultra Low Protein Diet

2 1/2 lbs cooked white rice
2 T vegetable oil
1 large hard cooked egg
1/4 t calcium carbonate (1.25 grams)
1/4 t potassium choride ( 1.25 grams)

Also add balanced supplement of vitamins and trace minerals.

Cook rice as per package intructions except use only 1/4 t salt. Add other ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate between feedings. Yields 1.1 pounds

Analysis:
protien 3.0 %
fat 6.7%
caarohydrate 20.5 %
moisture 69.2%

This recipe supplies 8% protein calories, 39% fat calories, and 53% carboydrate calories.

Feed suffcient to maintiain normal body weight.

5 lb dog = 1/2 pound daily
10 lb dog = 1/2 lb
20 # dog = 1 lb


Calcium carbonate = ground egg shells (can get a health food stores)
Potasium chloride = salt substitute products.

Hope this helps. My Puddin lives a long time on this diet and loved it.
Of course, always need to check with your vet. Puddin was not very enthusiasic about the K/D diet, but this she ate with enthusiasm.

The vet also gave me a Highly Digestible Diet which we used some toward the end of her life. Let me know if you are interested in that, too.

The first one (with Ground beef) is the that I had Zoey on for the last 6 months. She liked it, but was starting to get bored with it so I decided to switch her to the Hill's. I also found it would get a funny smell to it after a few days in the fridge and I would throw some of it out and could not make it in larger batches. The second recipe is a lower protein and she is not there yet, thankfully! Any other recipes with potatoes instead of rice, chicken etc I would love to have. Thanks for posting for anyone out there who can use them.
