Good news! Hope the US gives you good news, too! I will be praying that his US doesn't show a shunt, so that he can be treated with diet and meds at this time. |

This all sounds like great new's for Charlie. I will continue prayers for his Ultra Sound. |
I think if I understand you correctly this was basically a consultation and they do not intend to do any further tests except the new ultrasound? I hope they are correct in their assumptions. I know someone that has a Yorkie mix that is having issues with bladder stones. He just had his third surgery to remove stones. They finally went to a different doctor this time who found the stones to be of a different composition than the other doctor reported the other stones to be. They are very frustrated as you can imagine. This new physician says the new composition indicates liver shunt which the other doctor had said he ruled out. The dog is a tiny so liver shunt had been a concern. They do not live in an area near a specialist and have had to borrow money for the additional surgeries. It's a very sad situation. They love the little guy so much but are running out of options. I'm sure with your investigation you have learned a lot about these things. I hope that your investment in time and good doctors pays off for you and Charlie. Hopefully, Charlie does not have major liver problems and they can find a way to prevent more stones. |

The results are in Had ultrasound today Charlie did an excellent job they did not have to sedate him for the test :) Findings are as follows: Liver is of normal size shape and echogenicity Liver margins are smooth and well defined Gallbladder was distended and had sludge due to npo for testing Common bile duct was not identified and the pancreas was within normal limits Portal vein and vena cava are similar in size with strong blood flow:happyboun A portacaval shunt was not identified:clapsmile Spleen is within normal limits Both kidneys are normal in size and shape There are numerous small1-2mm calculi shadowing within the diverticula in each kidney :2omg: There is no evidence of renal pelvic or ureteral dilation Urinary bladder is within normal limits with a smooth mucosal surface and normal bladder wall thickness The bladder is distended and contains urine:eek: Prostate gland is normal in size and shape with uniform echotexture there is no evidence of sublumbar lymph nodes Both adrenal glands were normal in size shape and echogenicity the left adrenal gland measues 4.6mm and the right 4.5mm in thickness The gastrointestinal tract was normal in wall thickness and wall layering. There is no evidence of abdominal lymph nodes or peritoneal effusion Diagnosis: Mild bilateral chronic renal disease and kidney stones No sonographic evidence of a portosystemic shunt What does this mean for Charlie???? well it means we keep the diet changed to very low protein and stay on the new meds if there is a shunt it is very small as it is not effecting the blood flow through the liver but because he has the kidney stones he will stay on the lactulose to help keep the ammonia level down this is hard for the liver to filter. No surgery.... the only surgery they talked with me about would be an exploratory surgery and they did not feel that this was in Charlies best interest. We will go every 3-4 months to have an ultrasound done to evaluate the kidney stones and repeat labs every 6-12 months So all in all a good report :cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer: |
We just had Liver shunt Surgery on Friday with removal of stones. He has been on the medication and diet for about 5 months and was doing 10 times better. Unfortanetly he got a blockage and had to do surgery right away. Also Agreeing that isnt off the charts at all brutus was like 350 and then 420 or something. At his age it could be microvascular dysplasia they say it comes out around that age. I was just told today that his liver biopsy came back with dysplasia and they have to wait 3 months and redo the bile acids. In the meantime He has to stay on the l/d diet and his meds. I feed him the l/d and then take another can of blue buffalo and put about a tablespoon in and mix it all up and he eats that just fine. |
