I'm so glad you are going to be able to actually speak to someone at that facility on the phone. I hope it is helpful to you and Charlie. I am keeping you both in my prayers. When I make Gracie's food I put her veggies in the food processor. I guess a blender would work as well. Then I mix them in with her meat. I feed raw so it all mixes up pretty well. She likes most vegetables anyway but mixing them in the meat gets her to eat more of a variety. I'm sure you will be relieved when you finally get a solid answer about what is going on with this little guy. Hopefully it will be soon.:) |
Charlie Update Well I got to talk with a nurse from UT she is very nice and very helpful, she is actually progressing from nursing to becoming a surgical vet at UT. I talked with her for about 1/2 hour. she had me faxed charlies labs and records to look over along with questions that I had. She said it is possible that Charlie has a shunt but that his labs do not scream that at her. She is taking Charlies records to discuss with an internist there at UT and then getting back with me on their opinion and with information I will need for my visit with the local specialist which, by the way, got moved back to the 23rd. It seems that they scheduled my appt on the 11th with a surgeon, when they were going over Charlies records the surgeon said that I needed to schedule a visit with an internal medicine Dr first (which is what I though I had done) They said they have gone over Charlies records all the way back to 2010 when they saw him for pancreatitis and they too say this doesnt scream shunt but that it is possible. So for now, Charlies is doing fine, eating drinking (even tried and likes cottage cheese :)) and going potty well. so I will keep updating as I get more information. BTW thank you to all of you who are praying for Charlie and offering your support. It means allot to me and Charlie. :D |
Update :) UT got emailed and requested Charlies xrays so they could go over them, they called me yesterday and suggest that while Charlie may have liver issues they are not sure that it is a shunt. they have suggested that he have a Nuclear Scintigraphy, they said that it best determines if there is shunting in the liver rather than an ultrasound, they said that sometimes an ultrasound can find a shunt but the tech/Dr doing it must be very experienced and have expertise in diagnosing shunts via ultrasound because it is not a clear cut way to know if it is present. They said not to be afraid to ask how many times the tech/Dr doing the test has successfully diagnosed a shunt via ultrasound and to make sure it is one done with doppler They did give me several things to make sure and ask when I go to the specialist things like if a shunt is found, what kind of shunting device do they use. it should be an ameroid constrictor they said it is better because it closes slowly over a few weeks rather than cutting it off all at once. I need to ask if they will set me up with a nutritionist to set up a specific diet plan for Charlie since he only eats home made foods. They suggested that I have the bile acid test redone since Charlies bile acids were not way out of range. It could have been a result of other things they saw after going over his records. for example many of the labs that should normally be LOW for patients with shunts for Charlie were completely normal or one point above. So I have my list of questions, I am having to find a location to do the nuclear scan it is not done everywhere so I am in contact with the vet on that. and now we wait until the 23rd for our visit. UT asked me to let them know what happens after my visit. Charlie is doing fine he went to the groomers the other day so now he looks very handsome and not so much like a hobo :D Your prayers are working :) thank you so much!! |
Your doing such a good job taking care of Charlie. I will keep you both in my prayers! |
I hope someone can help you find a facility where that test can be done. It is true that ultrasound is not really great for picking up very small problems in a dense area. Hopefully the test is not so rare that you cannot find a place to do it that is reasonably close to you. |
Well Charliebrown is having a rough weekend, He has not eaten to much and he is simply laying around, He just seems like he isnt feeling well. You can tell by looking at his eyes. He did eat last night but is not interested today, he has been wanting to go out and stay outside but it is so hot here I worry he will become overheated so he doesnt get to stay out as long as he would like. He is drinking well and having no issues going potty just would like him to eat more. I sure will be glad to get our visit next week the 23rd cannot come soon enough, we were put on a wait list in case someone canceled but I guess no one has. |
Continuing prayers for sweet Charlie. I hope he starts to feel better today. |
Praying for Charlie to get some pep in his step....seems like the 23rd has been months off!!!!! Guess it is like watching for a pot to boil...........! Continuing to pray for that baby....keep us posted on him.... |
I am sorry this double posted..... |
How is Charlie feeling today? It may be something not related to his liver issues... thinking a vet check if he's not better today... Great advice from UT! They are such nice folks! |
Charlie is doing better think he was just tired of the chicken made him some ground sirloin to go with his cheese. and he perked up. :D I however spent the night in the hospital ruling out a heart attack  no worries though, it was not that, have to evaluate blood pressure may need meds for that. Anxiously awaiting the 23rd though. |
