My poor sweet Bailey.. Bailey, Remy's big brother, my 26 lb shih tuz is not doing so well:( Friday night, or I should say Saturday minoring he was "asking" to be put on the bed. I woke up and as usual got out of bed to pick him up. He screamed...I have NEVER heard a dog scream that loud!! Looking back I may have hurt him when I went to pick him up. I was half asleep so for some reason I took off his collar-- then when I tried to pet him he screamed again and went under our bed. I tried to call him out.. no go. I though, maybe I pulled his hair.. my brain was sleep fogged. The next morning he came down stairs and I went to pet him and he screamed again. oh no!! Dh took him to the vet. When dh came back (why or why did I not just take him myself:() he handed me three med and said the vet said he most likely has a pinch nerve. I did some research and ... the meds the vet gave were standard treatment for pinched neves.. but it also said the dogs should be caged and kept quite. I put Bailey in a pop up pen.. he still would not let me touch him and screamed when ever I got near. We went out for about an hour.. Bailey had turned the pen over and was in the living room:eek:.. I cleaned up the mess (food, water etc).. it took an hour to get him back in the pen. He was very upset. In the middle of the night he started crying and screaming.. went down stairs and he again had turned the pen upside down (I had anchored it) when I was trying to clean up the mess and calm him down with my voice he got out and he ran upstairs!! oh geeze:rolleyes: The next day I went to target and bought gates so I could gate off the stairs and keep him safe. Now remember.. he still would scream if you touch him.. The last two nights I have slept on an air mattress to keep him calm.. he hates to be left downstairs and not be with us. I also don't want him on our bed because I am so afraid he would jump off. I have talked to the vet.. I go in today to have him recheck and I am going to ask for xrays. He is getting better.. he let me cuddle and pet him last night and this morning. He is eatting and do his biz. This has been sooooo scary. It just KILLED me not to hug him.. I love my big bailey butt!! I have to thank lisa... she was visiting and helped keep me calm and helped with Bailey:) |
i hope bailey continues to improve...poor guy sounds like hes having a ruff time of it. keeping him in my prayers. |
Oh, this sounds scary. I am glad he's going back to the vet. If no good answers there, a second opinion with a specialist would probably be in order, with some more testing to try to look for whatever is hurting him so. This really sounds upsetting so I will be praying for him & for you as I know your nerves are probably zizzing right now from worry. Keep us updated on this little one & I pray he's in less pain, feeling better really soon. |

Thanks.. I know you have been through it with your baby. It is like a knife in my heart when he screams!! But, he is better today so it just may take time to heal.. What I asked the vet on the phone is what this mean for the future??? Thats why I want the xrays |
Son sorry to hear about Bailey! Praying for a quick recovery! |
Poor Bailey. Praying for a fast recovery! *hugs* |
Im glad bailey is improving Im keeping him in my good thoughts that he continues to get better |
Oh no, poor baby. Prayers going out for Bailey that he is feeling better soon. I hate when they hurt and you don't know what it is. |
Poor Bailey:( I am glad he is feeling some better, but I know how hard it has been to see your baby in pain. Bless his heart. |
Poor little Bailey. :(:( Bless his heart. He will get better! I know his momma is taking good care of him!! |
Thankfully he's on the mend and not able to climb stairs. Stairs are always a major concern with these little guy. Even though I love our two story, we are going to be looking for a single level for peace of mind. We tried putting the baby gate up, but both my husband and myself had some close calls triping on it, so we took it down. Time to move. ;) |
OMgosh...just reading this and it brings tears to my eyes....knowing what that scream sounds like..it's the worst terrifying sound. Sending prayers that Bailey is doing much better and will continue to improve daily. Hugs to you both! |
Oh dear Shinja. How awfully heartbreaking. I truly hope there is nothing seriously wrong, and the Xrays show all is well. ONly positive thoughts and prayers coming your way |
Oh no! Just seeing this now.... hopes he heals up quickly.... |
I am so sorry! Sending prayers for Bailey. |

He is doing a little better.... He cuddled with me last night. I have been sleeping on the air mattress with all three dogs (just like when you were here lol) so he is better. Alan went to pet him.. he yiped but at least it was not a "screem" like before!!!! I will keep y'all posted after the vet visit!! |
Bailey Please ask your vet to check in the xray for AAI (AtlantoAxial Instability) Sp. Kole was my 18 month old who had the same symptoms. I blamed his injury on another of my dogs when they got rough with each other. The vet xrayed his back only since he was just sure it was his back. Kept him in a playpen for a week. Went back twice that week for paid meds and recheck because he was not getting better. Screamed each time I tried to pick him up and yet he sat in the playpen and whined for me to hold him. Finally took him to Auburn Vet. Teaching Hospital. We took him in on an IV and they did MRI and found the AAI problem but by this time his system was shutting down. We had to give him up. It was awful. Most vets know nothing about the AAI. I hope it is a pinched nerve and the swelling will go down and he will be fine. But I wish someone had told me about the AAI problem since I had never heard of it. Be persistent with your vet. If I had I might still have my little Koleman. Good luck and let us know what you find out. Julia |

I am sooooo sorry for your loss. I know how much it must hurt. The vet group I go to have done AAI surgerys, in fact a friend of mine who have doxie had to have one of his girls in surgery and this vet saved her. I will question him when I go in to day.. and I thank you all for your advice. |
Up date on Bailey Well... it has been a week!! Bailey had his x ray and it shows 4 calcified disks. Two are in his neck or near. The vet said to keep him quite and on the meds and take him to a specialist for an second opnion. He said he could heal on his on... but .. I asked him what are the "possible" outcomes. If one of the disk ruptures Bailey would be parlized. I am not sure how I am going to pay for a $3,000.oo surgery but I will!! I can not let my sweet Bailey go without a fight! |
LiL Sis/Shinja; check out stem cell repair; see if it is appicable to discal problems. There is also a brand new procedure just now in clinical trials (with humans), it is an injectable substance that can re hydrate, repair the discs. The researcher is hoping for FDA approval in 2015. Now I mention this, as maybe animal research is ahead, and this substance might be available for use in dogs. Did the vet mention any kind of "brace" for Bailey. Either a neck brace or a combo neck-shoulder-thoracic brace? Awh I see you are going to a specialist - great news. I will continue to think positive thoughts for you and Bailey. |
Oh my....Shinja, I had not seen this. I am so sorry...poor Bailey. Do hope the appointment with the specialist goes well. Will keep him and you in my thoughts and prayers. |

Oh no, what a terrible week you have had- I will be praying for Bailey!! Sending good thoughts and prayers to you and Bailey~ ((hugs)) |
I am so sorry that this is happening to Bailey! Hopefully he continues to improve... Poor guy :( |

The vet did not say anything about a brace... he just said to limit his activity. That is hard because Bailey doesn't understand. In fact the vet did not act as if it was as serious that I feel it is. |
