| BAT & other results - what do you think? I posted before that my 5yo little boy recently had a BAT (and other lab work) done. I just got a copy of results and I am not sure what to make of them. Any insight? We are currently awaiting his Protein C results. Pre Meal Bile Acids: 9.4 (reference <10) Post Meal Bile Acids: 97.2 (flagged as HIGH, reference <20) Other CBC results flagged: BUN/Creatine Ratio: 32 (ref. 4-27) *HIGH Hemoglobin: 21 (ref. 12.1-20.3) *HIGH Hematocrit: 70.2 (ref. 36-60) *HIGH MCV: 81 (ref. 58-79) *HIGH MCHC: 29.9 (ref. 30-38) *LOW He has no symptoms at all, besides an increase in licking (he licks his lips a lot). The only reason we got him tested in the first place was because he started to have an occasional (maybe 1/2 weeks) bout of diarrhea (which has gone now) and our vet said many yorkies have liver problems so it was worth a check. It says on the lab report that portosystematic shunting has increased Post Meal Bile Acids of >100. Does this mean we can rule that out? Could MVD be more likely here? Thanks so much in advance |

| What did your Vet say? Generally, the school of thought is under 100 - think MVD and over 100 - think shunt. But those numbers are right on the border and she's got other bloodwork out of whack.

| My dog had BAT over 107 and she was over the age of 6 at the time she was presumptively diagnosed with MVD.... her age was one of the factors in leaning more toward MVD vs a single portosystemic shunt. We did an ultrasound (conducted by a board certified radiologist) and that showed additional findings supportive of MVD and not PSS. We put her on Hill's LD and repeated the BATs which went way down. I don't know about the licking as my dog doesn't do that....she does have pica though and licks the floor and tries to eat whatever tidbits of dust or crumbs she finds.

| Thank you for the insight. My Vet actually had to leave town for a week I haven't had a chance to speak with him about the results. He just ordered the Protein C test in the meantime - the results will be back the same time he is. I am just trying to wrap my brain around the possibilities and navigate through all the info. If there is anything you think I should bring up at my next appointment with the vet, please share. I'm looking for any kind of advice/tips moving forward. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Cali had bike acid scores similar to that and a liver biopsy showed very mild MVD with no treatment other than I keep her on a low protein diet. Hopefully your little guy has a very mild case or something else threw his lab results off. Good luck.
