| I've never heard of it... but I'm not current with some stuff... Denamarin can help protect the liver and help it to regenerate and remove toxins... maybe ask about that too.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Yes Lasers for osteoarthritic types of conditions, but not for organ health. Have you found any research on laser for Liver Shunt or other liver conditions? If you are saying the BATS test came back elevated and that is why you are doing laser, at least consider changing diet to a low protein one, and not to rely on laser tx alone.

Christabel was scheduled to be spayed in February. Blood work came back with elevated liver (135) and slightly elevated white blood count Vet put her on antibiotics and switched from frontline plus to reg frontline Retested in March. White blood count normal. Liver count 250. Retested in April liver count 214 Just retested and liver count 168. I did not use any frontline after March She is going to do a bile acid test tomorrow and start the laser therapy. She has been talking with another vet here in Birmingham that has had great results using the laser on a few of her patients with liver problems so she suggested trying this along with the bile acid test before going to a specialist

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali's vet used laser treatments when she had bursitis in her shoulder. It is used to clear inflammation quickly. I will try and find the brochure they gave me that listed all the uses. It seemed to help Cali.

Yorkie Yakker | High Bile Acid Test Just came back from the vet. Christabel had her blood work done yesterday and started the laser therapy. Today I had to take her in for her laser therapy and when I went to pick her up the vet wanted to talk to me. Her BAT Pre 40.2 and her Post 54.9. She thinks she may have Hepatoportal Microvascular Dysplasia. She said since the counts are high they are on the low side. She suggest to keep doing the laser therapy and put her on Denamarin. Then retest her alt. She said that more than likely a liver biospy will be next, that can be done when we schedule her spay. Then probably a sonogram to see if they can see the shunt. Anyone with any guidance / suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks |

| Have tests been run to find out what type of shunt it is? I just had my 8 month old in and now have to take her for advanced medical imaging where they put a small amount of radioactive dye into the portal vein and liver to see where it goes so we will know what type of shunt she has.

In that link I provide some links to Dr. Tobias a leading expert in the field of Liver Shunt. Dr Tobias is located in Tennessee. I don't know if your vet is a "specialist" or not in this field, but this disease is one I consider serious, and as such, I would get a second opinion as to best practice course of treatment. That being proper and best diagnostic tests, and if surgery is required a surgeon with plenty of experience in the field of LS surgery. I know that for me, I'd be headed to the Univ of Tennessee if I had a pup with suspected Liver problems.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | A couple of other thoughts: My investigation into Laser Therapy indicated that only the Class IV or Class V laser have good efficacy. So you might want to check what your vet is using. There are other investigative techniques that might be less invasive than a liver biopsy that dependent on the clinical profile of your dog, might be best to do first. It is one of the reasons why I suggest that read and consider seriously contacting Dr Tobias - at least she might or her office might be able to refer to the best/most experienced specialist closest to you. And I can tell you that if it were me, I'd definitely postpone any spay, until after her liver problem is firmly diagnosed and treatment has shown a whole better clinical picture.

Yorkie Yakker | Thanks for all the info. I do think the laser is class five. I'll check tomorrow, I have to take Christabel in for another laser treatment. As of right now I'm just going to breath..... Step back a second. I'm going to do the laser and meds to help liver function Then retest alt levels. All thoughts of spay or biopsy (any surgery) is off for now. I have emailed Dr. Tobias with all the info I have on Christabel. I'm going to wait and see what they recommend Thanks again for all your help and recommendations. |

EXCELLENT DECISION!! I am soo happy that you have contacted Dr.Tobias....I really do not think you could do ANY better than this doctor....she has been involved with liver shunts on all levels for many years....there is NO one that is more familiar with this disease, or any aspect of the disease from diagnosis to resolution!! I am personally THRILLED you have made this step!
