| old, sick yorkie, worried owners Hi everyone. I'm new, and I have a question, well its sort of a question, more like, I need advice. we have a 12 year old yorkie, and he's been having seizures, so we took him to the vet, and he was prescribed the usual pill that has been mentioned before, the name slips my mind right now, and it seems to have stopped the seizures, but now he's totally out of it. he's been on it for 5 days now, at first it was half a pill every 12 hours, but its been lowered to half a pill every 24 hours, but he sleeps all day, and when he wakes up, he stumbles quite a bit, and he has a dazed look. it hurts me to see him like this, and now when he stands, he'll rock his back legs up and down. I wonder if he's in pain. we all love him so much, my father the most, and even if we give the slightest hint about putting him to sleep, I can tell he'll have nothing of the sort happen. I just get this feeling he's not going to get better, I hope I am wrong though. when he had his first seizures, he bumped into furniture, so we have him in a baby playpen now, so in case he gets another seizure, he wont hurt himself. |

| I really don't have any advice to give just to say I am so sorry about your baby. We have one that is 14 and will be 15 in May. She is also in a playpen for safety and has dementia and CHF. I know it hurts to see them like that. My dh will not even talk about putting her down either. We have lost 2 and had to put them down and its one of the hardest things in the world to do. I wish you luck and just love that baby and give them love and care and thats all we can do. So sorry. |

| Is it Phenobarbitol? I'm so sorry! I had a very sever epileptic dog I just lost a little over a month ago, and sadly, had a huge range of drugs we had to use to control her seizures. If he reacts so poorly and he's on Phenobarb, I'd ask about using Gabapentin for 2 reasons. 1: It's becoming more common as a anti-epilepsy drug in dogs, and in my experience and that of clients in the clinics I've worked in, it seems to be better tolerated then some of the other epilepsy drugs. 2: For a dog that age, there's probably some arthritis and age-related pain going on. Gabapentin may also help with that. Sometimes it's a matter of waiting it out and side effects will lesson with time - But that said, if it's that bad, it never hurts to ask about trying a different drug and seeing if that works better. Your vet may say no - But never hurts to discuss it.

| welcome to yorkie talk, and i am so sorry for the reasons that brought you here. as rescuemama suggested, maybe there is an alternative medication that can be given??? sometimes it's just a matter of getting the right dose or combination of medications. i do not have any experience with this so sorry i do not have any advice for you other than if you have not seen a specialist with him, maybe that would be the next step? you could get his records and at least go to a consultation to see if you have any further options with your baby. you can use this link to find a board certified specialist in your area. ACVIM i know this is very difficult for you and the family and it is so hard seeing them get old and sick. i have an 11 year old girl with cushing's disease, hypothyroid, pancreas issues, and an enlarged liver. it took several months and so much adjusting/changing medications but she is doing really great now. these are different conditions, but maybe that can offer you some hope. give him lots of love and comfort as i'm sure that you're already doing. again, so sorry you're going through this. sending hugs.

| I'm sorry you are going thru this. My Sammy had seizures and the vet started him on phenobarbital and then added KBR which stopped his seizures. Your baby playpen is a very good idea. Gives you a little peace of mind about safety. Sending good thoughts to you and your doggie. |

| Good luck, I'll be thinking of you! Seizures are no fun to deal with - Hopefully you can find a solution that'll control him without making him so drugged up!
