| Oh, looks like I'll need a referral from my vet anyway... "Internal Medicine and Surgery Departments: Appointments with one of our board certified specialists are available with a referral from your regular veterinarian"

| Did they xray? are they sure it is LP alone or did he maybe tear his CCL? are they sure its the knee only and not the hip? whatever surgeon you deide on, your regular vet can get more pain meds onboard for today. Tramadol can be added in and they can rbably give an injection for pain that will be a bit sedating.

| The vet who saw him was quite young and I could tell he was perplexed that I'm claiming my dog is in horrible pain yet seemed perfectly fine when he examined him- he checked all of his leg and hip joints as well as his back pretty thoroughly but didn't do x-rays. I really just want a specialist at this point.

| Being stupid with worry, I forgot my vet was open on Saturday mornings. Just called and my husband is off to pick up a different med that can be taken 2-3 times a day and will hopefully work better than the metacam. I also asked for a referral to which she told me they could do the surgery (of course). I said I'd like a referral to a board certified surgeon and she said she'd have to see if she could get "a number or card or something" from the vet and he was busy today but they'd get the information to me sometime. Yeah, thanks.

Troy just came home from the vet with Buprenex which I'm reading is an opiate stronger than morphine- yikes! He's been pain free since he woke up crying at 8:00 (when I gave him his metacam) so hopefully I can hold off on giving it to him until tonight- at least he should get a good night's sleep.

| Well Im glad to hear he will sleep well tonight. That is when it is the most intolerable to be in pain because you just cant sleep because of the pain

| Wow I went to town and look at all the posts you got!! Ladyjane, I am so glad you are jumping in here!! Looks like you are getting lots of advice from everyone! As far as your vet, sometimes is it best to use someone who you know is good. But you must have that trust factor too IMHO. This is my feelings, you could always try another vet. If you don't like them you still have your old vet. I am glad they are giving you meds to give to help with the pain. Poor baby. It is so hard on us when they don't feel good. I hope they will give you the referral. I would keep "bothering" them until they did. But I can be a little pest sometimes. Ha ha. Hope it all works out and hope you will keep us updated. Hugs to your sweet furbaby!

| I would certainly stick to my guns about board certified ortho surgeon. I am not familiar with any of these other references given , so I can not speak about them...but if all else fails, you can always go to the vet school at the Universty.....equipment and specialist and current acceptable/recommended practices, an excellent "Plan B", if needed. Then, I personally would seriously consider a change in vets...not within that practice for the reasons and concerns you stated accurately yourself! Vets and their attitudes can change over the years, and smart and perceptive owners will recognize this in their vet and perhaps re-consider what is in the best interest of their baby. You seem to have done that! |

While looking at that facility close to you is possibly a good option, if I were you I would be asking lots of local people if they have experience there. We have a wonderful facility in Houston, but I still use only certain vets there. Good facility does not always mean all of the surgeons are equal. If he is having a lot of pain, I would see if your vet can give him something for relief of the pain.

| Here is a link about CCL that was written by a surgeon in this area: Yorkie Haven Rescue - Cranial Cruciate Ligament Tear Info The only concern I have for Sugar is the pain...I honestly have never had a pup be in that much pain with a torn ligament. I have had a few of them and they did not use the leg, but did not exhibit extreme pain.

| Yes, the sudden and severe pain is scaring me to death. It can come on when he is sleeping and totally still which is just so hard for me to understand. Most of the time he is walking around just fine, sometimes has a slight limp and then bam! Out of nowhere- horrible yelping. He has never had one single sign of LP until Thursday morning- if he hadn't been already diagnosed, I'd never have known. This is just so shockingly sudden. And you are very right- I really do need to explore other vets when this is over. I've been going to the same vet for 8 years and with all of my dogs healthy for the most part, I guess it's been easy to get complacent. It is a very nice facility and overall I've always been very happy with them but with the two founding partners getting into orthopedic surgery, I'm having some trust issues with them. The younger vet I saw on Thursday went on and on about how difficult the surgery would be but of course, just as I expected, they are reluctant to give me a referral. I did get a recommendation from a friend on a local board certified surgeon. I'm going to call Monday and try to get him in for a consultation without a referral. Does anyone have any suggestions on questions I should ask her. Besides questions specific to his condition and recommended treatment/surgery, I know I want to find out how long she's been performing the surgery and how frequently as well as her experience with smaller dogs. Can anyone else suggest any questions I should ask? On a good note- the Buprenex is helping immensely in the meantime. ETA: Thanks for the link Ladyjane- I'm off to read.
