Puppy fell from 2nd story balcony My puppy ran out the door and fell off our second story balcony. He yelped and then ran under the stairs. I crawled under the stairs to get him and brought him into the house to check him out. He was scared and I checked him over and he seemed fine. Since then he has been running and playing but it seems like he is favoring it a little. Just when he's standing still I will see it. But when he's running and playing he's fine. Anyone have any suggestions? If something was broke would he be running and playing? He has to go get shots Thursday and since it seems like theirs nothing wrong I didn't bring him in. |
Oh, get him to the Emergency Vet now. He could have ruptured causing a leak in a lung vein/small artery or one in the brain and it is slowly bleeding and may begin to clot, then dislodge and go to his heart, lungs, etc. A fall from that high up for a little guy puts extreme pressures on the tiny delicate parts of a puppy as they slammed inside his body when he hit the ground, causing a tear or rupture anywhere within his body. His liver could be bruised, his heart, and he need steroids and support ready and waiting in case he crashes. There may be occult or frank fractures that he is too shocked to show and his acting normal is just canine stoicism, masking many awful things that can be wrong. He may have lucked out and truly had nothing serious happen but I would have him at the Emergency Vet being x-rayed, neuro/ortho and full checkup while keeping him for observation until all danger periods of time have passed. Please take him in right away. |
He needs to got to the ER ASAP. If he hit his head witch is most likely he will develope swelling in his brain & there is NO way for you to tell, only your vet can tell so PLEASE take him in NOW. You do not want to wate to find out if he shows symptoms as the damage will already be done. |

Oh my gosh, I agree. Please take him in right away. He needs to see a vet tonite not 3 or 4 days from now. I had one that played too but we took her right in after she fell off the bed, and this was on carpet, and she had broke her leg in 2 places. We don't need to take a chance and guess. You need to know what you might be dealing with. Poor little baby, I hope everything goes well for him. |
OMG..............Is this one of those trick questions that others have mentioned, aimed at getting people all riled up??????? |
Please, go to a vet..... |

I had a little Shih tuz fall off a 2nd story one time.. I was to the er so fast that I almost burned rubber!! You have to have him checked out to be sure and if you wait the problems will get more serious. Good luck |
Your puppy needs to see a vet right now. To answer your question, yes, some do continue to act fairly normally after breaking bones. And it is a bit more serious when a pp breaks bones because of growth plate issues. Unfortunately though, bones ant the most concerning thing right now. |
I agree with the others, I'm glad you baby survived, but there may be some internal injuries. Dogs do their best to hide pain so you can't always go by how they are acting to determine if they are suffering. I'm praying for your baby, let us know what the vet says. |
Take him to your vet this morning, he could be alright, better safe than sorry though. |
Please say you took your baby to the vet. |
I am sooooooo sorry for the puppy involved here.....this is EXACTLY why I do EXTENSIVE interviews and screening of my prospective parents.....I do not EVER want to have anyone I entrust the health and life of one of my precious little souls, to see it go off a second floor balcony, and have ANY doubt or question that the baby may have to be rushed to the vet. It is a wonderment the baby even survived....a broken bone is the very least of your worries. Google "de-acceleration injuries".....You have GOT to be more intuitive about this puppy, or it will never survive. Make it IMPOSSIBLE for that puppy to dart past you and out the door. You need to get a baby gate up across your door jam so that when you open the door, there is a baby gate there to block his exit. If they wont lewt you do that, you need to at the very least, buiy a wire ex-pen, 24 inches high, and zig-zag it open to cordon off the area around the front door....it will be a pain for YOU to have to step over when you want to go out the door, but the baby will be stuck on the other side and cant run out the door. You need to get some books and READ...."Yorkies For Dummies" is the first one I always insist my parents get....PLEASE get this book and read it and learn what you must do for these babies and why you do it!!! It is unacceptable to see a puppy fall from the second floor and not take it for a vet check!!! That event SHOULD have terrified you! |
I hope you have already taken your pup to the vet. You need to have him checked today |
Please have your pup checked by the vet immediately!!!!!!! |
Please go to the vet. I will be praying for your baby. I hope you have learned something from this so this doesn't happen again. |
Just checking for update. Hope this baby is under observation in the hospital right now with mommie sitting beside. Reread my earlier post and it barely even makes sense. I was just so shocked by the post and all that it implied that I obviously was blabbering trying to pour out all the possible dangers that I didn't even know what I was saying. The very idea of a precious young Yorkie falling off a second floor balcony and smashing at high velocity into the ground or whatever surface he fell on(hope it was a bush or lawnchair) and then dragging itself into attempted isolation and later obviously standing with some part of his body being favored that could be observed when standing still just horrified me to the point of stupification! That baby should have been placed on some type of body board and taken to the nearest E.R. Vet at once, not allowed to run about the house after a terrible fall! I sure pray he made it. |

My baby just fell off a balcony, should I be worried ? DAH.............. If this is a real question, and I hope it is not, the answer is : When in doubt, ALWAYS take your baby to the Vet. Puppies do not die from seeing the Vet too often. They do die sometimes, if people decide to 'wait and see'. Please up date with news. All of us who read this, are truly concerned and care what happens. |
Is this someone playing a prank??? If not you need to take your baby to the vet right now!!! If it is a joke shame on you!!!! You know how we all get, I am going to be worried the rest of the evening now!! |
Any update?? How is this puppy doing? |

This had to be a cruel joke....why in the world would someone post such an incident on a forum where it is nothing but people that adore their babies, then never bother to follow up with an update on the puppy? I didn't think anyone could POSSIBLY be so....???....as to watch a puppy fall two stories off a balcony, and think, AT THE VERY LEAST, it did not need to be seen by a vet just to be sure there was no internal damage??? |

It is amazing to me how many people just think that if a dog is still acting okay, nothing could possibly be wrong and no vet checking is necessary unless their dog has been down for several days, limping, bleeding or lying in a heap! There was one poster whose dog was hit by a car and didn't take it immediately to the vet, but posted here first and we could go on and on about posts on here about alarming situations where the poster had not or would not take the dog in for a check-up. And so many people don't think dogs feel pain unless they are limping or bleeding. I spent my first 3 or 4 months on YT with my mouth just hanging open in shock at some of the attitudes about vetting but eventually learned to keep it closed, though am still shocked over and over. Hopefully, if they stick here, they will learn how vital early health care is after trauma. |
