Please pray for dessa My daughter has a 4 lb yorkie and she needs PRAYERS!!! Dessa is my Granddog and my baby she is 4 years old. She lives in Tuscaloosa, AL. My daughter first noticed Dessa was limping when she was walking and all of a sudden she fell over. They have hardwood floors, so they thought maybe she slipped. They were in the process of dropping Dessa off at her other Grandparents house and they were flying to see me in Florida. After they got here on Tuesday they talked to the Grandparents and they said she still was not walking right. They took her to the vet the next morning and he gave her a steroid and I believe an antibiotic and sent her home. Later in the afternoon she had a fever so they called the vet and they took her back into his office. Thursday the vet suggested they take her to Birmingham to see an orthopedic vet and when they called the vet said the next appt they had was Tuesday 3/20/12 so they made the appt. My daughter got back home Thursday evening and picked Dessa up. On Friday my daughter called the vet in Tuscaloosa and then the one in Birmingham and the B'ham vet told her to come there immediately, so she took Dessa there. Dessa's temp. was a little over 103. They thought the ride and my daughter being so upset might have something to do with it. They said that they wpouldn't be able to get a good reading because of the steroid, so they should keep the Tuesday appt and bring her back then. The strange thing about all of this is the week before all this started Dessa was given 5 shots in the leg that is giving her the most problem. It is the back and front paw on her left side. This is breaking our hearts. Dessa has never been sick and has always been super active. They say her knee is out of the socket and they think she may have a slipped disk. They want $1,500 to run test and a MRI on Tuesday. The fever has been gone for 2 days. We want our baby girl well. Anyone having any advice please let us know. PLEASE PRAY FOR DESSA!!!!!!

It sounds like she was given too many shots in one leg, I am no expert but in my eyes that sounds a bit excessive.

I agree, we just want her well!!! She doesn't even weigh 4 lbs. and they gave all 5 shots in the one little leg. Now she's having all kinds of problems with both legs on that side of her body. It kills us for her to be going through this. We're praying that she ends up okay.

I would be headed to the Neurologist ASAP rather then the ortho. I agree with the MRI but also would want a spinal tap at the same time. I would not think it would take much to do the MRI of the spine & the head & I would be pushing for it. Is she any better/worse today ? I'll be Praying for her.

You are absolutely correct, this is too many vaccinations all at once for a dog this tiny & Vet's should know better especially in this day & age.

Did she get 5 INDIVIDUAL shots....(SURELY TO GOODNESS NOT!!!!?) or did she get ProGard 5, which is a combination vaccine? ProGard is usually give sub-q, between the shoulder blades....was it her rabies shot she got IM in her back leg?

It was one shot. I'm sure it was most likely the ProGard 5. She goes in the morning for all the test. I am not sure exactly what test they are doing. They said the test would cost up to $1,500. They said she will be sedated and we're concerned about that part. She's walking much better today. When she went out to use the bathroom the front paw wasn't drawn up and she was able walk on it very well. That's a huge improvement. She's been on an antibiotic since Friday and it must be working. She's in good spirits still giving lots of kisses. She's such a sweet and smart little girl. We appreciate all the prayers!!! They are greatly needed.

The shot was given in the back leg that she is having problems with. That's why we're wondering if part of this is from the shot????

I just got off the phone with my daughter and the vet will be testing for Spinal Meningitis, doing a MRI, and several other test. Does this sound like what needs to be done? We have never had a dog that has been sick like this. From what we understand the knee problem seems to be common for the breed???? We're so confused???? We just want the best treatment possible for our girl.

Dessa will be tested for Spinal Meningitis, have a MRI and several other test. The vet said it was like the "gold" package of test????? All we know is that we want her well. We just want to make sure we get whatever we need to diagnose her correctly and get her on her way back to a clean bill of health. We don't even know what to expect. Please pray for Dessa!!!

Does she have any history of illness, recent bloodwork ok? Here is a link to a study done in England on dog vaccinations, very eye opening and hopefully will encourage people to do some research on how often, and if and when they need to continue to vaccinate their pups. Also, vaccines can be given one at a time, they do not HAVE to be a combo, which is easier on their little bodies. Most vets give the combo out of convenience, but if you ask they can formulate it one anti/virus at a time, just some helpful info for anyone reading this. We are sending prayers that your Dessa will be ok and it sounds like she is already doing better? hugs! Canine Health Concern - Putting your dog’s health first

My daughter is leaving the vet now. The vet's are baffled. She is in no pain, she can walk, but something is not right. They did recommend that she take Dessa to Miss St. or Auburn. She is calling Miss St. now. It seems to be neurological. They don't even think the knee is dislocated like they originally thought, since she is walking pretty well. Please continue to PRAY for Dessa!!! I will keep updating. Anyone that has any suggestions please feel free to let me know. Thanks!!!
