anything containing any kind of steroid is a definite no no for my girl. the trilostane she takes daily is to lower her natural cortisol and all other intermediate sex steroids. she also takes melatonin, hmr lignans, denamarin, and l-thyroxine. before treatment, she was high in all of the hormones that they test for so giving prednisone would make her a very sick pup again unfortunately. i have to be very careful with any shampoos, eye ointments, ear cleaners, etc as they can be absorbed through the skin and in to the dog's system causing elevated hormones. i have to be very careful with even human creams, etc. like hydrocortisone for itch relief that zowi is not exposed to them. i am definitely going to ask about the zymox (without the steroids) when i take zowi back on the 26th and see her regular dr. thanks so much for looking up the otomax too. it was worth a try! if zowi could have steroids, there would be more options in treating her infection, so for her keto appears to be the only option. they mixed her up some ear drops without steroids and said to use that and not to clean her ears until after the recheck. again, thanks so much for sharing your experience and for all the suggestions. i appreciate it greatly!

| Our Boxer has had yeast infections in her ears for her entire life she is 12. Finally last year I googled it and found a breeder than recommended a change in diet would help. I can testify that we only modified her diet as we feed her and Georgie high quality food already....we added nonfat yogurt with probiotics. Boy has it made a difference so much so that when we run out and we don't mix it in her kibble a day or so later she starts scratching her ears. Probiotics are good for furbabies

| I was reading this post about Yeast in the ear and then I saw another about Cushings and Steroids ... Long story short .. It sounds like what was wrong with my Chihuahua that I recently had put "to sleep." I started reading about Cushings in Dogs on Wikopedia and had to stop because it scared me .. That maybe I putting her to sleep was NOT the answer. The doctor was giving her steroids for what he thought was a pinched nerve and she went down hill from there. I even said she got MUCH WORSE after taking the steroids and he sort of blew me off like I didn't know what I was talking about. |

| update on zowi i was originally told to wait 14 days for a recheck, but i took her in yesterday afternoon a little sooner. i was told not to clean her ears, but to give her the drops once a day. i could see a lot of black gooey stuff (yeast) pretty far down inside her ear so i wanted to have them clean it knowing she would be way more comfortable with that stuff out. they did clean her ears again (they look 100 times better and she feels better) and rechecked the microscope cytology. we got great news that zowi's yeast has reduced and it was at a 0 to 1! zowi did finish her all of ketoconazole pills and thankfully we had no problems. (zowi's dr didn't want to reduce her trilostane unless we encountered a problem so we followed her orders and kept her at usual dose.) FOR ALL THAT RESPONDED WITH YEAST PROBLEMS IN THEIR PUP, JUST WANTED TO SHARE IN CASE THIS COULD HELP... zowi's dr said that zymox would be good, but she recommends a ketoconazole topical antiseptic solution for cleansing and flushing of ears and skin. she said she has had great results with it. (it is only available through licensed veterinarians.) it does not contain steroids. it's called keto-tris flush + ps. our vet charged us $22 for a 4 fl oz bottle, so it is not expensive. (they also had it available in wipes and shampoos.) *ingredients: ketoconazole 0.1%, phytosphingosine-HCI 0.01%, tromethamine (tris), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (edta) in a ph 8 buffered solution. *properties: keto-tris flush is an antiseptic (antibacterial and antifungal) solution for gentle cleansing and flushing of ears and skin. contains ketoconazole for the management of yeats and fungi and preservatives for antibacterial activity. Phytosphingosine is a pro-ceramide to restore the skin barrier and helps in the long-term management of skin conditions. phytosphingosine hci also has antispetic properties. the alkaline ph of keto-tris flush + ps helps potentiate local antibiotics such as quinolones and aminoglycosides. can be used on dogs, cats, and horses. i was instructed to put some of it on a q tip and just rub it around inside her ear (not deep inside, only where you could see) twice a week and wipe away any excess cleanser or debris with a cotton ball. this is to prevent any recurrence of the infection. maybe this is the newer med that ellie may was referring to but was unsure of the name??? she also said a small amount of nonfat yougurt once or twice a week would not be harmful. thanks again to everyone for sharing their experience and giving support. i am eternally grateful to all here! thanks for caring so mcuh! i don't know what i would do without all of you and i really mean that!!!! hugs to all!
