| Torn acl. My yorkie is twelve yrs old. She had a torn acl in her left knee two yrs ago and we did the surgery. Surgery went well and she was fine. Last yr she was diagnosed with kidney problems and a slow growing tumor in her anal gland. She has fine all last year and suddenly Christmas Day she started limping. Took her to the vet and she has a torn acl in the right knee. She is not eating and is so sad. My vet is telling me that I should not do surgery because of the kidney and anal gland tumor problems. He thinks it would put too much stress on the dog. It is breaking my heart to see my little girl not able to walk and now she is not eating. Any suggestions? I have read crating for a while might heal a torn acl. I am not crating her, but she is not walking around because of the pain. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Im sorry to hear that your little girl is going through so much. Honestly, I would first seek a second opinion from an orthopedic surgeon. I'd be wary of doing surgery on her as well. Personally after discussing options with the surgeon I would probably opt for cage rest for a few weeks so the leg can heal as much as possible. Keeping her confined really is the best thing for her. You do not want her injuring herself further. I know you said she is not moving because she's in pain but an accident can happen in the blink of an eye. Also, by going to the surgeon you can discuss with him what anti-inflammatory medication or pain meds are ok to give her to make her more comfortable. Hopefully once she is in less pain she will want to eat more.

| Thank you for your concern. I tried giving her an anti-inflammatory but I think that is what made her lose her appetite. i am thinking of taking her to an ortho, but I know how much coco hates going to the doctor. I don't want to stress her out any more than she is. |

| I am so sorry. What a difficult situation. I hope you can find some kind of solution for her so that she will not be so uncomfortable.

| I'm sorry about your girl. Some small dogs can do very well without surgery. It can take a long time for it to heal though. I'd be doing the same thing in this case if my vet thought it was okay to do so. IMO, it's perfectly fine for her to hang out with you during the day as long as you are holding her/have her harness so you know she can't run/jump. Other than that, it is really best to crate her (or even a playpen/xpen. One slip up before crate rest is over can set her way back. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are great drugs, but maybe not so much for dogs with kidney problems. Kidney disease can cause a loss of appetite. So if she stopped eating as soon as it tore, I'd think maybe it's pain. But if she stopped eating after starting the drug, then I would have to wonder if it's just too much for her to process. There are other options available. They may not be as good, but might be safer for her. It would be worth talking to your vet about. Make sure they know she isn't eating because they do need to know this in case it is because of her kidneys.

| I started to give coco pedialyte mixed with honey and baby food. She doesn't really like it, but considering she is not eating, its better then nothing. I am so worried about her. She doesn't seem to be getting better. She is so depressed. I want to do the surgery, but would never forgive myself if something happened to her. And then the other thought is it's $3000. |

| Coco started eating dog food today!! We have been hand feeding her people food for the past 3 weeks, but she woke up today and went over to her bowl. I put some dog food in it and she gobbled it down. I was so happy I started to cry. Even though she still is limping from the torn acl, hopefully that will slowing get better. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Thank you all for your kind words. Only a Yorkie lover knows how we feel. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | No expert here, so all I'll offer is a suggestion on something to look into: They make leg braces for dogs that might help if surgery is not an option.
