Prayers for Layla Hey guys. I haven't been around much lately. A month ago we celebrated a year with no flare-ups with Layla's IVDD. We adopted two more senior dogs and they are fitting into our family wonderfully. Even Layla is sharing her bed sometimes! Well, when Layla was still going to rehab, she had some bad smelling dark pee for awhile and they did some tests thinking it was a UTI but it was clear, and her urine was just really concentrated. She has had her urine tested every once in awhile and there have been no issues so we thought we were doing a good job expressing her. Well, lately it just started getting darker and darker and started to smell quite strong, and it wasn't just a urine smell anymore. So we took her in at the start of December and the vet found a LOT of bacteria. She said she counted at least 5 kinds. There was also a lot of white blood cells and protein. I am someone with kidney problems myself, she didn't need to explain the protein to me. I know her kidneys are in trouble. She was put on antibiotics for 20 days, and today is her last day. We took her in again for another sample. Her pee smells a lot better and is not as dark, so I thought it was gone. Well, it's not. There is still a lot of bacteria and a lot of white blood cells and a lot of protein, as well as what she said are renal something... little squiggly lines is how she described it. She said sometimes they just slough off like skin sloughs off, but that there were a lot there. What we've decided to do is take her off antibiotics completely for one week so that is all flushed out, and take another urine sample directly to the lab for a culture, so they can figure out not only what's happening in the bladder, but in the whole urinary tract. She may have thinner flaccid bladder walls now that she has been expressed for almost two years, and the bacteria may be living right there in the walls of her bladder. I have always lectured about how keeping on top of this is important and how infections in the urinary tract can spiral out of control and be major problems, and I am so mad that we let this happen to ourselves. I am crying for my baby girl. Please pray that we can get rid of this and that her kidneys are not failing. |

Sending prayers |
Thank you guys for all your thoughts and prayers for us! Layla does not seem like she has anything wrong with her at all. She is eating and drinking and barking at her new brother! As far as she knows, she's doing just fine. I guess the good part, if there is any good part, is that she can't feel it if it's painful. |
So sorry Layla is going through this send well wishes and hugs to both of you |
So sorry to hear this about Layla - but she is in the best hands possible with you guys as her parents! What a lucky little girl she is to have people love and care for her so much. I pray she the test results will give what you want to see. |

Checking for an update on Layla. Hope she is feeling much better.:) |
Lindsey, I am sorry that Layla is having a difficult time with a UTI. First of all, please put it out of your mind that this was something you did. I have a pup who has to be expressed and she has been battling a nasty UTI. This is very common in these pups. I express her religiously! No matter how often and how well you do it, these pups are very prone to UTIs. With Gabby, we have tried different antibiotics and still had issues. The last C&S left us with very few options for antibiotics as the bacteria (e Coli) is very resistant. She has been on Nitrofurantoin now for two weeks ($500 eeek) ...I am praying that the new C&S that was drawn on Friday will come back negative. If she ever comes up with a clear urine, there is a medication that they want to start her on that is supposed to help prevent UTIs. She must not have an infection when they start it. I don't know what that med is, but will let you know when I find out if you are interested. I hope that you will find an antibiotic to help little Layla. Keeping her in my thoughts and prayers. |
I was away for the weekend and I'm just seeing a lot of these replies now! Thank you so much for keeping Layla in your thoughts everyone. We made Layla pee in a cup this morning and took the sample directly to the lab so it wouldn't be sitting around. Our vet said even though they're supposed to keep it in a fridge, that she has tested samples before and after refrigeration and it kills some of the bacteria, so she wanted us to take it directly to the lab that would be testing it, instead of just giving it to a vet and waiting for them to take it in. Anyways, hopefully we'll get a call from the vet with good news. |
Fingers crossed that her urine comes back clear! :) |
