Bless his little heart. :(:(

Maybe it's caused by swelling inside from the surgery??? I don't know but I hope it will take care of itself. I'm glad he's home, but I know you're not getting much rest.

I am hoping it is from the swelling. I am applying ice packs as they instructed. And, he is also on Metacam for inflammation.

Poor little guy:( I am glad he is home and the surgery went well. Hopefully as the swelling goes down from the surgery everything else will work out on its own. I know you don't want to have to put the little guy through anything else painful. Saying prayers for that sweet little boy. I hope you both get to rest tonight.

You know the "big thing" now in human surgery after 24-36 hours, is alternating heat packs and cold packs...I hate ice packs but heat has always worked wonders for me...but we were discussing post op swelling and they said they now recommend alternating heat...speeds up cirrculation which aids in reducing swelling....and the cold packs...for the pain. Just a thought...maybe something you would want to ask A&M?
I also am thinking it is the internal swelling that is causing the tip to protrude....poor little soul.....

A&M is who told me to use ice packs...so I will stick with that. Funny, the tip was out when they handed him to me, but because they did not say anything, I just ignored it. It was when it was still out later that I got a bit concerned. My vet said to continue with what I am doing. We shall see...I do hope it is from the swelling...they manipulated a lot in there and he is a very tiny one..only weighs 3.6 pounds.

I think he is going to sleep! The tramadol knocks him for a loop. Not so sure about me. Oh well...not the first time with a sleepless night. haha

You won't get much rest tonight! You'll probably doze off and then wake up every so often and check on Sammy.

Poor little guy. It sounds like he's been through the washer. I pray that he will be getting better after all this.

I'm sorry....I did not want to suggest you change anything....I just thought if you ASKED them about this, I personally could get educated if it was the same thought processes in vet medicine as in human medicine! I will call them and ask myself, for my OWN inquiring mind that wants to know! I am happy little Sammy is doing well post-op.

Oh no poor Sammy. I hope all is better by tomorrow for him.

awwwwww poor baby. Prayers coming your way.

bijoux1 06-15-2012 08:53 PM

I really hope all goes well tonight with Sammy, and praying that hopefully this will resolve tomorrow!!

yorkieusa 06-16-2012 04:20 AM

I hope you and Sammy had a good night. Tramadol is what the hospital gave Kacee when she came home and it really made her sleep!

I don't think you need to be sorry. I also don't think you need to call...each case is different as is the approach of each surgeon. Sammy had a bit of irritation and they said to apply ice packs.

Yeah, well I don't care for Tramadol for the tiny ones. My experience has been that the compounded med is very bitter and the pups spit it out. I had told them that and said I did not want it but they said he was taking it well. Sure enough he did...maybe they compound it in something very different up there. Or maybe Sammy is just not that bothered. Bottom line, it is working well! He slept all night. He was bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning, looking for his food. :) He still has his little penis peaking out. I got it back in but out it came again. I sure hope that changes by Monday.

yorkieusa 06-16-2012 05:29 AM

I just hid the tramadol in some boiled chicken breast next to her kibble and it disappeared every single time!:D I'm glad he slept good. I hope his peaking penis will stay in and you won't have to go back.

For tiny pups like Sammy, they usually give liquid. That is the problem...not the tablets. The problem is that the tablets cannot be broken up tiny enough for the little pups. There is a pharmacy that sells tablets that are compounded, but many places do not use them. I was going to purchase some to have on hand for tiny pups, but I had to purchase 100 of them and that is a waste...no way would I ever use that many and they were not cheap!

Peaking penis... :D:D:D

Just wanted to say Luma got tramadol for after her spay and she hates it, spits it out every time. I started coating it in a little bit of that Kong peanut butter paste and she thinks it's a treat.

yorkietalkjilly 06-16-2012 03:20 PM

When poor little Tibbe had to take Tramadol liquid, he just hated it but he would not spit it out! My Jilly would have had it all over me & the cabinets - she could spew anything all over but Tibbe just swallowed that nasty stuff & shook his head. It does taste pretty bad.

We are talking about the liquid Tramadol. It's dreadful and impossible to give.

I am thinking that perhaps A&M compounds it differently than most places because I have had no issues with Sammy. I am surprised because I have had a few pups go nuts with it and spit like crazy.

ladyjane 06-16-2012 07:08 PM

Sammy had an uneventful day. :) Eating, peeing and sleeping. :) I am keeping him pretty drugged up except for meal times. His tummy is a bit bruised looking, but the incision looks great. Maybe tomorrow I will get some pics. I kind of don't want to take them with his little friend peaking out...kind of tacky.

Uneventful is good, and what you need is a good night sleep you have had a rough few days, but I am starting to sense that is a normal for you, glad to hear he is eating, that is always a good sign:thumbup:

An uneventful day is good news.:)

ladyjane 06-17-2012 02:34 PM

Yeah...I think he is going to be just fine...although there is still some edema around the shaft that may be the reason for his friend sticking out. I will take him in tomorrow to be checked out.

ladyjane 06-18-2012 09:58 AM

Well, Mr. Winky (figured that's a good name for it), was out this morning; so after breakfast I took Sammy to see my vet. It did seem to be a bit better because it is staying in for longer periods. Since it looks ok, my vet said to take a wait and see approach. She also suggested I contact the surgeon at A&M to ask if this is a common thing with this surgery. I called and left a message for the surgeon to call me at his convenience.
Otherwise, things are going very well. Sammy was actually playing with a toy this morning! :) He loves his squeaky toys.

yorkieusa 06-18-2012 10:44 AM

So happy to hear he is playing. I hope Mr. Winky will resolve by itself with no intervention.

It has stayed in all afternoon! The surgeon called me a little while ago and he said that it is possible it is from the surgery and that if it is improving, not to worry about it. He said to call him if any other issues. I think Sammy is well on the mend! :)
