| zowiandnikasmom | 10-06-2011 05:07 AM | thank you all so very much for your well wishes and prayers for my zowi. thankfully, her endocrine panel to u of tenn is back and it did not take as long as it did for the first one. her dr called last night as the office was closing and said that she got results, and recommends starting zowi on a drug called trilostane. it is the newest treatment available for the treatment of cushings and is the only drug that has equal success in treating both types adrenal and pituitary cushings. i personally did not get to speak with her because i was not home so justin took the call. this time the test did show her cortisol high, (pre normal at 49 post high at 185.5) i'm unsure if her estradiol was still high or not like the last test and justin doesn't know to ask these things but i am taking zowi to see her today (probably not till after 4pm because dr is usually in surgery all day.)
i have a million questions for her! i am very concerned about giving her this because it is considered quite toxic. it eats away at the adrenal glands to make them produce less cortisol but could take away too much causing her to have an addison crisis and the effects are permanent. it could also cause one or both adrenal glands to rupture. addisons is much more serious and life threatening than cushings. i was also hoping that once her thyroid was under control some of her symptoms would go away or lessen, so i need to ask about that too before i go ahead with this. i am also questioning, are her symptoms bad enough to start this or should we wait? i would hate to make her more ill than she is right now with the side effects that could occur. each individual reacts differently, so you just don't know... there is also a similar drug, lysodren that has been used for about 30 years for treating cushings. it is equally toxic but is more predictable based on length of use, so i am wondering why she is chosing trilostane over lysodren? our dr is wonderful and i'm sure i'll feel much better after i talk to her, but it's going to be a very tough decision....
after we see her dr i will update.... |
