| Luxating Patella Genetic or Not? So my baby was diagnosed with LP’s in both of her knees, I put her on bed rest and started her on glucosamine tabs. After about 2 weeks she wasn’t getting any better and was still limping really bad so I took her to another vet for a 2nd opinion. They took x-rays and they think she needs surgery. She’s seeing their orthopedic specialist on Tuesday the 20th. I've been doing a lot of research on whether it's genetic or not and can't seem to find a definitive answer. Any thoughts? |

| She's never jumped on or off any furniture. She runs around and plays like normal puppy's do. I don't recall her doing anything to injure her herself. She was playing one day and all of a sudden started limping. She didn't even yelp. |

| Yes, but not always. A lot of small dogs just have really shallow grooves, so it is very common. The younger they are when diagnosed, the more sure you can be that they were born with it. Is she still having symptoms?

| Yes she always limps. Some days it's worse then others. Some days she even seems to be in discomfort. Like if I touch her knee she growls and nips at me. And she never ever does that. |

| Uncle Teddy also has an LP so it would not surprise me at all if it was indeed genetic. We are praying for Chloe to get that spring back in her step asap so she can come over and play with Uncle Teddy and the others.

| I would also have to assume it's genetic. She is very young and her uncle has it. Extremely likely... If she is limping, that in itself indicates pain. She is nipping also. I would go with the recommendation of the vet and do this surgery as soon as possible for the comfort of your pup. Is she on meds to help with the pain until surgery is done?

| Mikki has LP in both back knees. I did ask my vet and his opinion was that it is genetic. I had asked about neglect because of everything with Mikki. But he said it was genetic and did not have anything to do with the neglect. However, she does not limp and he did not recommend surgery at this time. Good luck with your baby and dealing with this.

| The vet originally put her on an anti anti inflammatory and told me to rest her for a week. I did that and she was still limping but didnt really seem to be in pain. The last couple of days she seems to be really uncomfortable. I'm going to call the vet in the morning to see if there's anything I can give her. She's secduled for her spay the day after her consultation with the vet. Hopefully they can keep that date and do both surgerys at the same time. Quote:

| Teddy had a consult with a surgeon - a ACVS diplomat - who told me that Teddy has two luxating patellas. I asked him if the condition was genetic and he said it is and that dogs with this condition should not be bred.

My vet agrees with your vet. I think it is good advice to follow!
