Why is he eating the I/D and not the one for the kidney's? While I know most dog's don't like the K/D which is for the kidneys there is Purina NF that most do like.I hope he will get better.

He has been getting fluids and does real well with them. We have tried K/D and he ate it at first but will have no part of it now. We were not aware that Purina had a special food for this and our vet has not mentioned a phosphorus binder ? What is that for and the purpose ?

I'm so sorry that your family and Jake are going through this

I know what it's like as my little Brody had advanced kidney failure. It seemed like it came on so quickly for him. I'm not familiar with those medications although our vet did give us some type of heart pill that she said might lower his BUN. It did a bit but the name of it has slipped my mind. We did the sub-Q fluids twice a day at home, the k/d rx food, 1/4 pepcid per day and appetite stimulant as well when he wouldn't eat. It seems like your vet has him on the right track but I'm sending prayers and hugs. It sounds like you care very much about his well being and you are lucky to have each other. I know it's always hard to see your little one sick. Cherish the time you have together and stay strong.

Sorry to hear about Jake. Nikki my 18 year old had the start of kidney failure. About 8 months ago my vet put him on KD diet. He gets the canned since he has no teeth. He loves it and my 3 girls are always trying to eat it. She also put him on the Ekaptin powder but he refuses to eat any food with it on. I had a puppy a few years ago with kidney failure and too her to a nephrologist who said if they have at least 25 % kidney function they can do well with treatment. It may be a good idea to take him to a specialist. I will keep him in my prayers.

Please do not attempt to make your own diet plan for him! This could be deadly to his kidneys. I would try the Purina N/F and if that does not work, have your vet do a consult with a vet nutritionist for a balanced home cooked diet. Large amounts of steak and chicken are not good for him!! I had my vet do a consult with Dr. John Bauer at Texas A&M and he sent me two recipes for my pup who was in renal failure. In the end the disease did get him, but I had so much more quality time due to that diet.
I do not have experience with Azodyl.

I am so sorry about little Jake. Its so hard seeing them sick but thank you for being a loving, caring mommy to this precious little boy. Praying by some way he gets better and you have alot more time to spend and love him.

I'm do sorry for what u r going through!!!! My Stella has a Bun level of 155 and she has been on Iv fluids for 3 days started at 140 and actually went up. They r confused by her cause she isn't acting that sick. She is only 13 mos old and I am heartbroken. God Bless you and yours! Thoughts and prayers with you!
