I have a 11 week old 8 oz sick little guy If there is anyone ot there that can answer this right away, I would really appreciate it. My little one is 8 ounces and 11 weeks old I have been feeding him Nutra-Cal and chicken and whatever else he wants. Last night, he started going down hill. Now he is not even taking the Nutra-Cal. I am having to force feed him water!! Does anyone have any ideas? |
Please take him to the vet. A little one that small and young can go downhill quickly. He needs to be seen by a vet. There are numerous possibilities of what could be wrong that need to be sorted out by a DVM. |

I've taken him to the vet. Vet says that all I can do is keeep on trying. He isn't sickly or anything. He's just NOT trying. He's a tiny guy, He is from my last litter of pups. All the rest of them are great. Ranging in size from 1 to 1 1/2 pounds! He's the runt of the litter and just not doing well. Other than taking him to the vet, do you have any ideas on what kind of food he might like? |

You might want to post this again in the breeder's talk section so that the exp breeders on here could see it and weigh in. In human med (what I am in), we hospitalize for "failure to thrive", so my advice would be hospitalization w IV fluids. Perhaps the breeders on the site would know other alternatives. |
Maybe try find another vet?? I don't understand why a vet wouldn't do anything but tell you to try? Or can you try and make some chicken and ground it down into a paste and add chicken broth so he can lap it up? |
buy beef liver and boil it in about 6 onz of water, take that broth and mix it with soft good quality puppy food and a bit of goat's milk, put a bit on your finger and put it in his mouth, do this every two hours, that is what I do for my puppies. hope he gets better soon.. |
You can tube feed and give sub fluids...but if he refuses to eat, going down there is more to it then what you can see....he may have an underlying problem..liver shunt etc...may have fading puppy syndrome...all you can do is keep him warm...ask the vet to infuse fluid or show you how with Ringers...best wishes PS...blood from uncooked liver and barley water is helpful. |
You may want to take him to the vet for IV fluids, when they won't eat they will not drink either. Getting dehydrated makes you feel terrible and you have no appetite. For eating you probably are going to have to force feed the puppy until it will eat on it's own again. Try other things - lean hamburger, scrambled eggs, even a little vienna sausage to stimulate it's appetite. If nothing works draw up some chicken baby food in an oral syringe & put in the side of the mouth. Give a little at a time so the puppy swallows instead of chokes. Since the puppy is only 8 ounces it doesn't have much "reserves" and any hypoglycemia can be life threatening. Good luck with your baby Teresa |

Either my husband or I stay up with him ALL night. He's our #1 priority right now and has been for about 6 weeks. He likes some stuff one day and then the next day he looks at me as if to say " WHAT again?" So I try somethng else. He liked chicken. So he ate chicken for about 10 days with something else in between. He's fed every 2 hours. feed Cesars puppy food which I think is good. I've tried science diet, blue buffalo, and just about every other food they make. I tried chicken, beef, and liver. He did NOT like the liver at all! I tried baby food too. Nope on that too!! He did get into some whipped cream and that he thought was great!!! |

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I would seek a second opinion from a different vet. With him not drinking on his own you have to be concerned with dehydration. I really think my vet would have kept and given fluids. At that age you don't want to take chances. |
Try beechnut baby food - chicken w/ broth flavor. My girl was the same way at 8wks. I gave her nutra-cal and when she got bored of that she was given honey. i literally forced the honey on her tongue and rubbed it on her gums every 2 hrs. I also forced water with a syringe. The vet told me to grind the kibbles and caesers and also feed with syringe. It gets messy but i did what i had to. Good luck to you and I pray he becomes the toughest of the litter! |
And i definitely agree with the others...if all else fails please get him iv fluids. |

Well, we made it thru another night. I don't know that he is doing a whole lot better, but he is up and walking around. Last night was hubby's turn to care for him. At 2:30 this morning, he didn't want to wake up to take his liver stuff (for lack of a better word! LOL), but hubby got him to take some, and some Nutra-Cal. I got up at 5:00 and sent hubby to bed. We will wait and see how today goes. I'll post more after I get home from work. Thanks!! Suz |
