Oh Brittany I am so sorry to hear this about Jackson. As hard as it is on you, he will be home soon. I don't think anyone on here is going to say you are a bad mother. It is hard to stick to the "rules" for these little guys. You took him in to get the care he needed right away. You've acknowledged what most likely caused it (which bad doggie parents probably wouldn't have a clue!). I wish more adults took as good of care of their pets as you do with Jackson. And we all know you are going to do right by him when he gets back home. Now turn the lemons into lemonade as you learn to "stretch" yourself to be more assertive with all those loving family members. We all know you will because it is best for Jackson's health. And most importantly, even when Jackson is begging for a little taste of something and not getting it from you, he knows you love him. You'll have to keep reminding yourself of that. Praying for Jackson's speedy recovery! |
Oh Brit I'm just seeing this now. You are such a good momma to Jackson and are doing all you can to help him get well. Keep us updated on how he is doing and we will all be here to support you and Jackson  |
Poor baby and mommy. At least you took him to the vet, so now he can start to feel better where you can give him lots of love and hugs. |
Oh no praying Jackson feels better soon. So glad you got him the Vet so soon. |

I'm going to ask the vet tomorrow about diet, etc, but I am more and more interested in homecooking now. We'll see, I suppose. I'll cut out canned food, too. I wonder if I'll be able to at least mix chicken in with his kibble to get him to eat. He's never eaten kibble by itself... *sigh* I suppose if we have to, I'll just have to show him some tough love if kibble is all he can eat. Not sure what I'm gonna do about treats... he LOVES clicker training and trick training so much, I don't want to... stop. I'm going to have to find some kind of soft small treats I can use. I use Canz Real Meat treats right now... the venison one I have is this: Crude Protein: not less than 25%, Crude Fat: not less than 20%, crude fiber: not more than 2%, moisture: not more than 20%. Too high? I don't know how to differentiate between treats and kibble and canned guaranteed analysis' etc. But I shouldn't even be worrying about this right now. Just wanna get him better. Will ask vet questions tomorrow.... |

Thanks so much, captnoonie! Did Uni have to stay overnight in the hospital, too? Or no? Ugh, this is going to be hard with my fruit and grain-hating boy. I don't want to stop doing clicker training as posted above. Plain boiled chicken he loves so I hope he can have that. It was a very chocolate-y cupcake if that makes a difference, not a brownie. Chocolate icing and cake too. Anyways I shouldn't even worrying about this right now. I just want to have him in my arms ASAP! Quote:

I'm so sorry that the news from the vet was not better and that Jackson has to stay over night. It's so heartbreaking when they are sick and especially when they have to be at the vet overnight. You are doing the best thing you can for him. Try to just get through the night and write down your questions for the vet tomorrow. Sending lots of hugs for you and Jackson and wishes for a speedy recovery. |
At first, just one food is best. Over time, you will very likely be able to add in extremely lean meat (after all, that's what people who homecook for their pancreatitis dogs do). Depends on the vet what he will and won't be allowed to have. Some are more strict than others. Definitely the Canz are not okay for him anymore. Don't forget to talk to the vet about rotating food (I know you like to do this) and see if it's okay. My guess is that sticking to one food as long as he does well on it is going to be best. |
Brit, I'm sorry that Jackson has to stay overnight; but that is the best place he could possibly be. I hope you he gets to come home soon and feeling much better. I know how much you work with Jackson on training and feel certain that someone will be able to recommend something you can use for your training once he gets back on track. |

Thank you guys for the support. :D I am going to watch a movie and take my mind off him not being there cuddling with me. :( I wonder if I should sell the $100 worth of bully sticks I just bought... lol. Brand new. The $$$ could really help right now. |
Yes. Get them out of there before you are tempted to give him one in one of his moments of boredom. |
I am so sorry to hear about Jackson not feeling well. Sending prayers to both of you. |
I'm so sorry to hear about Jackson, he seems so athletic and healthy and I know you do your best to feed him a healthy diet, but sometimes these things are just genetic. Once they have it under control, his diet will have to be carefully monitored, and I hope you can trust your vet in helping you to find the best diet. My son’s dog went through so many attacks before they found a food that worked for him, Iam’s (low residue formula), and also feeding three small meals instead of two. I know a lot of people are “against” Iam’s, but personally, I love the company since they make a food that helps Baxter. He got so skinny we really thought we’d lose him. If lots of different foods cause pain, they become afraid to eat anything, and I’d be very careful about adding lots of variety to his diet. |
