Has your beloved Yorkie experienced this? Today we took our sweetest love to the vet because she almost over night started coughing and developed a distended abdomen! Last week she was walking with us and this week not so much. Sara Lee is 12 yr old, weighed 8.3lb today at our vet. x-rays and blood work were taken and tomorrow we take her to a cardio vet specialist. She has fluid around her lungs and abdomen which is clear, no blood, but no protein. We visit the specialist to rule out CHF or liver cancer. We are devastated. We know Sara Lee is an older dog, but all of a sudden...this! She has had many teeth removed over the years and was due for her annual cleaning and shots this month. Have any of you experienced this situation? Is there a positive outcome? Sara Lee means so much to the whole family. We will do whatever it takes to get her well or at least continue to make her life lush and loved! I would appreciate any comments, suggestions any of you may have. Thank you, jc and family

So sorry to hear about your companion...sending good thoughts. Do you know all the major vet school in the USA are now teaching a new protocal for vaccines. Yearly boosters are discouraged. The dog should have .. puppy shots and a one year booster and no more...except for rabies, kennel cough if boarded and Lyme disease where it is a problem. Vets have finally admitted yearly vaccines have caused more disease then they have prevented...none of my Yorkies have had yearly shots for 20 plus years...none have ever contracted any disease these vaccines prevent...and I go to dog shows.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear about Sara Lee. My sisters Irish Water Spaniel had the sudden fluid in the belly. She was diagnosed with liver cancer. They were taking fluids off of her for awhile to make her more comfortable. I will keep Sara Lee in my prayers.

So sorry about your baby. I have a little female schnauzer, Tina, that is about the same size as my yorkies. She is little but has always been a ball of fire. She was diagnosed with a heart murmurer several years ago and now is has CHF. She is on lasic and enapril for her heart. She has gone into dementia which is the worse of any of it I think... We love her and will continue until she can't continue anymore. She was 13 in May. Sometimes her little tummy looks bloated when she eats. I don't know if that may be what you are talking about. When they get that age unfortunately we have to face the fact they will have issues come up just like we do. All we can do is love them and provide for them until its time for them to go. Breaks my heart to think of losing mine too and I know its not going to be long. The enapril and lasic help with the cough. Probably the water pill more because she is getting rid of some of that fluid. Good luck and hope your news is not this at all. Maybe something that is not life threating and you can have her several more years. Let us know and will be praying for your little one.

Update on Sara Lee Thanks to all of you who sent your prayers to us for Sara Lee. Those prayers worked! Sara Lee is feeling well on Prednisone 5mg daily and is really better than her "back to normal old self"! Because of Dr. Laura Smallwood's, Saint Francis Veterinary Specialists, experienced and prompt assessment of Sara Lee's critical crisis, Sara Lee now has an excellent prognosis and hopefully many more senior years to enjoy with us. Dr. Smallwood removed over 12 oz of fluid from Sara's thorax which immediately relieved pressure on her lungs and allowed her to breathe! You can imagine our relief to watch Sara Lee come back to us... I would like to know more about " protein losing enteropathy" which causes low protein and fluid accumulation in many aging Yorkies. Sara Lee returns in 2 weeks to Dr. Smallwood for further evaluation, but we expect only good news! I will keep this post going just in case there is more info out there that can help all of us with aging Yorkies and how we can best care for them. If you have information, please share. Signing off as Sara Lee is sleeping on my feet. Gosh, hate to move her and tell her it is time to go to bed! Later.... Janice Grateful to
