Peanut is going to the vet AGAIN....
 

Poor Peanut... I just don't understand what is going on with him. He is still losing his hair.
We changed the food. Using Advantage2 for fleas and parasites, bathing in an all natural oatmeal shampoo. We thought all of these things would help. But, it is really looking worse??? What is up with this? I am really worried about him. He will freeze to death this winter. He looks like a chinese crested on his body and a yorkie in the face. Poor baby. I feel so badly for him. I know he is miserable.
He has a terrible odor a day after his bath and he is scratching and chewing like crazy. His skin is red where he does this. I don't know what to do. His skin feels so oily too.. The earliest I could get his appointment is this Tuesday, (12th) at 11:00.
I am so ready for the vet appt. I feel so sorry for him. He has or I should say HAD a very pretty coat and now is almost bald.
Just needed to share my frustrations with those that will understand.

What have they ruled out?

He probably needs a dermatologist.

We thougth it was fleas and the frontline was not working well. So I switched. Then, we thought maybe food, switched to 4health and taste of the wild. No corn, soy, wheat... Then vet said maybe shampoo, changed to all natural with oatmeal ...He is worse!!! I don't even know where a dermatologist would be in our area or out of our area!1 That will be awful. We are in a VERY rural town.

I hope Peanut can get some relief soon and that you will have answers.

I don't know anything about dermatology, but I have read here many times that oatmeal shampoos, which we consider soothing, have made things worse for pups with skin issues.

I really don't know anything about this so I hope I'm not sending you off in the wrong direction here but I was reading this thread earlier today about a diagnosis of mites and some of what was said reminded me of what you are describing. I hope that your little one feeling better soon.

It doesn't really sound exactly like a food allergy, but an elimination diet would need to be done to confirm that which ouldn't be done with a food like Taste of the Wild.

If the vet is out of suggestions this week, then your pup needs a specialist. This isn't at all normal and it's a quality of life issue. The vet school is in Athens and there are specialists in Atlanta. We vacation in Thomaston/Melena, so yes, it's hard to find more specialized vets there! It will probably just require a couple hours drive.

I hope you guys are able to figure out what is going one with little Peanut soon.

Not to scare you or say this is what is going on, but...my story

When I was growing up we had a bald Yorkie. She looked like a Chinese Crested also. My parents got her just before they got married and she lived to the young old age of 21! My mom used to take her everywhere - snuck her into the movies, restaurants, etc. This was England in the late 1960's before a lot of medical advances for our babies.

When her hair started falling out they contacted the breeder to see if she knew what was going on - no clue. They went to the vet and were told it was a genetic defect. Super healthy dog, but with a small flaw. They contacted the breeder to let them know that Peach was okay (funny calling her Peach and she had no hair - LOL). The breeder asked if they would consider trading Peach for another dog because they wanted to have her destroyed because she would be bad for their reputation. My mom told them not too worry since she would never refer them to anyone ever.

I remember crying the first time someone called her ugly. I did not know there was anything wrong with her - she was just part of our family.

I just read the description, is he scratching at his skin until it's red? Teddy has localized mites has your vet done a skin scraping just to make sure it's not that? There's a picture in my thread of what the mites look like around Teddy's eye. I read somewhere that the mites can cause hairloss. Here's a link

Also, my significant other's mother has two golden retrievers one who was itching like crazy and knawing at his skin until he made wounds. The vet diagnosed him with some type of allergy which he is now getting medicated for. However, the allergy did not cause hair loss. I'm really sorry I can't help you any more these are the only things I can think of...I really hope you can find the answer soon, I know what it's like to not know what's wrong with your baby :(

You said your pup is oily, right? Maybe this is it!

Have you considered going to a veterinary dermatologist? What you are describing doesn't sound like food allergies to me either, but rather some type of fungal infection of the skin.

Thanks so much for all the information. He is 4 years old, so if it was/is the demodex, then there would be an underlying problem, right? He does not have patches on his face. It is on his back and legs. Hid neck and face are so pretty???

Also, I am having to babysit an older (15 yr old) yorkie fro a friend. Her yorkie is BALD!!! I thought it was just his age. Could he be giving my poor peanut something?? He did not have this problem before, now that I think of it. He had a very pretty full coat. It was short, but, no problems. I am so upset. But, we go to the dr in the morning. What would signs of diabetes be? Gonna see if I can find some info now...

By the way, you are all so wonderful I just love it here!!!

I would definitely let the vet know the dog you are baby sitting is bald. It will be important to rule out some type of contagious infection.

Has your vet sent off any skin scrapings for analysis?
