Dark/Thick Blood in Poo 2 Attachment(s) I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm just worried about my dog, Biscuit. He passed dark/thick blood with his poo about half an hour ago. This is the first time something like this has happened. It wasn't a few drops, either. He left behind a small pool of blood. I checked around his anus and he doesn't have any cuts or noticeable problems. He's acting fine otherwise. He's running around, eating, drinking, etc. Maybe he ate something he wasn't supposed to and it's hurting him? I'm very worried. I left a message with the vet, but I don't think I'll get a response until tomorrow. I'm going to keep a very close eye on him (which basically means I won't sleep tonight) ... I'm tempted to just rush him to the vet. I'm also worried about tonight. He hates fireworks and I don't want him to have a bad time :( For reference, Biscuit is 4 years old. Any advice is welcome!! |
Glad you are seeing a vet as soon as possible, and I'm glad he's running around, eating, and drinking. Don't know much about this sort of thing, but I've read that if blood is coming from high up in the intestinal track it's black, and lower down it's red, I've also red that black can be much more serious than red. But that's all I know. I think some illness can cause blood in poop, is he current in his shots, has he been around other dogs or dog parks lately, and has he eaten any bones that could cut his intestines? Praying it’s nothing too serious. |
This sounds like it could be serious! Please, please take your baby to the nearest emergency vet to have him checked out! It is not worth waiting it out until tomorrow if there was that much blood. Better to know now rather than wait and risk his life! Best of luck to you! |
It could be the beginning of pancreatitis which can become serious very quickly. If it were me I'd take him tonight. Maybe you can head off a very serious problem. It's better to ere on the side of caution. Please check back and let us know what they say. |
Do you have an er vet that could at least check him out and get something to help with his tummy? I would be concerned since there was a lot of blood and not just a little in his poop. My Cali gets colitis and will have bloody, mucousy poops from time to time and I have medicine for her. But if there is a lot of blood I take her in as it can be a more serious condition. Keep us posted. |
What a cute little boy! With the amount of blood and with it being dark/thick, I don't think I would wait til morning. If you decide to wait, I would watch for any signs of lethargy, vomiting, confusion, pain, lack of coordination... I would be up all night w him (as you said). If you have more diarrhea, I definitely would not wait. The amount and the darkness/thickness would definitely have me very concerned as to where the bleeding was coming from. Also, does he eat rawhides, bullysticks? These can be swallowed and cut the intestines, needing to be seen by vet. |

Time to head to the ER. A few drops of brighter red blood sometimes can wait, but not when there is a lot of it and not when it is darker like this. He needs medical attention now. Best to take care of it so it doesn't get worse. No need to wait for the regular vet to call you back. He needs to go to the ER. |

Wow, I'm getting more replies than I can keep up with. Thank you all for the concern! I'm going to try and find a place that will see him tonight. I don't know what I'll do with myself if something happens to him. He's still acting like pooping blood is nothing out of the ordinary, but I definitely don't want him to take a downturn later tonight. I'll keep you guys updated. |

Yes, take the poop with you if possible. Google "emergency vets miami" and you'll get something. For there to be that much blood, there has to be something going on in there. Even if it's just a virus, it can still be incredibly dangerous. Not worth taking a risk. |
I still live with my parents and we're tight on money right now, so they're giving me grief about wanting to take him to a clinic. In fact, they're angry with me for "overreacting." This is incredible. I'm going to watch him very closely, but this doesn't end here. |
You need to take him in, you have to do what is best for him. Taking him to the ER because of bloody poo is not overreacting. |
