Dark/Thick Blood in Poo

I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm just worried about my dog, Biscuit. He passed dark/thick blood with his poo about half an hour ago. This is the first time something like this has happened. It wasn't a few drops, either. He left behind a small pool of blood. I checked around his anus and he doesn't have any cuts or noticeable problems. He's acting fine otherwise. He's running around, eating, drinking, etc. Maybe he ate something he wasn't supposed to and it's hurting him? I'm very worried.

I left a message with the vet, but I don't think I'll get a response until tomorrow. I'm going to keep a very close eye on him (which basically means I won't sleep tonight) ... I'm tempted to just rush him to the vet. I'm also worried about tonight. He hates fireworks and I don't want him to have a bad time :(

For reference, Biscuit is 4 years old. Any advice is welcome!!

Glad you are seeing a vet as soon as possible, and I'm glad he's running around, eating, and drinking. Don't know much about this sort of thing, but I've read that if blood is coming from high up in the intestinal track it's black, and lower down it's red, I've also red that black can be much more serious than red. But that's all I know. I think some illness can cause blood in poop, is he current in his shots, has he been around other dogs or dog parks lately, and has he eaten any bones that could cut his intestines? Praying it’s nothing too serious.

This sounds like it could be serious! Please, please take your baby to the nearest emergency vet to have him checked out! It is not worth waiting it out until tomorrow if there was that much blood. Better to know now rather than wait and risk his life! Best of luck to you!

It could be the beginning of pancreatitis which can become serious very quickly. If it were me I'd take him tonight. Maybe you can head off a very serious problem. It's better to ere on the side of caution. Please check back and let us know what they say.

Do you have an er vet that could at least check him out and get something to help with his tummy? I would be concerned since there was a lot of blood and not just a little in his poop. My Cali gets colitis and will have bloody, mucousy poops from time to time and I have medicine for her. But if there is a lot of blood I take her in as it can be a more serious condition. Keep us posted.

What a cute little boy! With the amount of blood and with it being dark/thick, I don't think I would wait til morning. If you decide to wait, I would watch for any signs of lethargy, vomiting, confusion, pain, lack of coordination... I would be up all night w him (as you said). If you have more diarrhea, I definitely would not wait. The amount and the darkness/thickness would definitely have me very concerned as to where the bleeding was coming from. Also, does he eat rawhides, bullysticks? These can be swallowed and cut the intestines, needing to be seen by vet.

Thank you for the reply! I have also read that darker blood is more serious, which is why I'm worried. The blood wasn't exactly black, but it wasn't the typical red you associate with blood. He's up to date with his shots, hasn't been around other dogs (aside from meeting a few during his walk), and hasn't had any bones (although I worry that he might have taken something he shouldn't have).

Still waiting for a response from the vet... and Biscuit is still acting like pooping blood is nothing out of the ordinary, so that at least makes me feel better. Thanks again :)

Time to head to the ER. A few drops of brighter red blood sometimes can wait, but not when there is a lot of it and not when it is darker like this. He needs medical attention now. Best to take care of it so it doesn't get worse.

No need to wait for the regular vet to call you back. He needs to go to the ER.

You’re welcome, but I must tell you other people who replied know more about illness than I do. I'd go to an ER as soon as possible, and let us know how he's doing. Good Luck!

Wow, I'm getting more replies than I can keep up with. Thank you all for the concern! I'm going to try and find a place that will see him tonight. I don't know what I'll do with myself if something happens to him. He's still acting like pooping blood is nothing out of the ordinary, but I definitely don't want him to take a downturn later tonight.

Can you take the poop in, that might be helpful.

Yes, take the poop with you if possible.

Google "emergency vets miami" and you'll get something.

For there to be that much blood, there has to be something going on in there. Even if it's just a virus, it can still be incredibly dangerous. Not worth taking a risk.

I still live with my parents and we're tight on money right now, so they're giving me grief about wanting to take him to a clinic. In fact, they're angry with me for "overreacting." This is incredible.

I'm going to watch him very closely, but this doesn't end here.

You need to take him in, you have to do what is best for him.

Taking him to the ER because of bloody poo is not overreacting.

Oh that makes it tough. Can you call the nearest emergency room vet and ask them their opinion and ask if it could wait till you normal vet is open. If they say, "No he should be seen right away", put your folks on the phone.

Blood in the stool is not something to take lightly in my opinion. This happened to me about 2 years ago with Rosie. It started out with diarrhea, then blood in the stool, then vomiting. It went from bad to worse. The blood was literally pouring out of her bottom by the time I got to the vet. I really thought I was going to lose her.

Now, if I see blood I head to the ER. Not to scare you, but please get this baby to the ER. I understand about the money. I have had to use my credit card more than once. Many places offer credit care (I think that is the name of it) to help. Please find out and keep us posted.

I'm sorry for not being clear. There was no more blood. Biscuit was fine while I typed that response. I did go to the ER and they checked his heart, temp, tummy, etc and all seemed well. He hasn't presented any pain, discomfort, diarrhea, or vomiting in the hours since the blood so they let him come back home. I wasn't able to afford x-rays but they said it was only a recommendation and not an urgent need. They also recommended some blood work and a fecal test to check for parasites, which we will get through tomorrow.

Biscuit and I are worn out. A big thanks to everyone who replied and wished him well :)

Biscuit didn't do so well the last time he was on Hill's (lots of scratching and skin infections). Natural Balance has really helped him in that respect.

Did they give you I/D? Rosie has tummy issues all the time and that is what they recommend for her. I will let you know that I tried taking her off of it and we had tummy issues again. You might want to watch closely when you go back to the Natural Balance.

Yup, I/D. I'm just worried his allergies and itching might come back. We had him on Hill's for a while but Natural Balance really helped with the itching. His tummy takes priority at the moment, though, so I'll be taking your advice. Thank you!

Did you mention the itching and allergies to the vet? There may be a better option for him.

Yeah, the vet knows about the itching and has treated Biscuit in the past for skin infections. I'm hoping he'll respond well to this food. I don't ever want to see blood in his poo again :(
