Like Kristin said, the Schirmer test will be done and should easily be able decide if your baby has dry eye. There are several treatments availble and hopefully, IF your Teddy does have dry eye, one of these will work.

I am glad you are seeing a specialist. I will be thinking of your Teddy Thursday.

Yes but hasn't corneal ulceration been ruled out?

Hi thank you for the link. I think that corneal ulceration was checked for at the last vet visit? I might be wrong though ...he did that flouriscine test?

Yes, this is the test used to check for ulcers of the eye.

The person I spoke to on the phone told me that a consultation is $150. Is this the average price for a specialist? I'm not worried/struggling with money or anything I'm just honestly curious?

I am not sure about prices in your area but I just had Maddie at University of Tennessee with the opthomologist. She had surgery to help her dry eye.
Before the surgery, we were seeing the opthomologist for consultation and treatment.
The regular office visits ran me between $150 and $200. This included several tests and very thorough exam.

It was posted as being non irritating to the eye and I wanted people to fully realize how dangerous a steroid can be to a pup's eye.

Thank you. I'm nervous about Thursday. I think I've read about 10 different sources on dry eye...the Casey Anthony trial didn't really help my mood. :(

Try and relax :rolleyes:, easier said than done, huh?
There is no way to know it is dry eye without being examined and even if it is, like I mentioned earlier, there are several treatments available that have proven to be successful before thinking about surgery.

Hopefully, your visit Thurs. will prove you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the info. I thought it was similar to a vet where they charge you for an examination fee and then additionally charge you extra for each test conducted...the $150-$200 is very reasonable considering that includes tests and examination.

No problem. We have dealt with eye issues almost all Maddie's life. You will feel much better after seeing the optho. I left knowing exactly what the problem was and what my options were for treating. No guessing or treating symptoms and wondering about the problem.:) Now, relax!:D

You should call and ask if that is the case so that you know for sure.

It's not going to make a difference...to me anyway. It's something I need to do regardless of how much it costs. I've set aside...a good amount of money in case of an emergency/surgery etc. Also, they are the only opthamologist in the area so it's not like I could go somewhere else even if I wanted to. LIke Maddie said, at least I will finally know exactly what's wrong with Teddy and the course of action that needs to be taken to help Teddy...and that reassurance to me is priceless.

Yes, it was ruled on your Teddy, but things can change very quickly. Teddy likely still does not have any ulceration, but I personally wouldn't risk using corticosteroids.

Oh, God no! I would never give anything to my dog without a prescription! I think that what the previous poster was doing was explaining to me her situation and how easy it was to deal with just to ease my nerves. I don't think she was trying to urge me to give my dog corticosteroids...at least that is not what I took from her post.

Yes, that is true; and many people have old prescriptions laying about. :)

Again, my goal here was to educate and to warn people of what could happen to a pup if a steroid was applied to an eye that had an ulcer or abrasion.

It's just that unfortunately, a lot of people come on this website looking for advice and self- medicate instead of going to a vet just to save some cash...nothing is being directed at you personally, but LJ and others are simply making sure that all the information is put out there in order to make sure that nobody reads your advice and takes it the wrong way.

Oh my. You are having a bad week! :( I know, it could be a worse diagnosis, but it makes your skin crawl a bit. Sorry I'm coming onto this thread a bit late, but I saw on another thread you were having a bad week so I went looking to see if you posted about poor Teddy being sick. Hope this diagnosis helps turn things around for poor Teddy (and his mommy)! :)

Thank you for caring. Yes, it has been a pretty emotional week...I'm still feeling a bit rattled to be completely honest. Thank you for checking up on me and Teddy I truly appreciate it.

I'm not sure what the treatment is yet. I have to go back to my regular vet because the opthamologist only diagnosed it but doesn't know the exact treatment, prescriptions, etc so I have to go to the vet to pick them up. I just don't know how he got it and still don't fully understand what happened here. I thought dogs get ear mites and not mites around the eyes? I am just baffled by this.

And yes, I'm extremely relieved that it wasn't dry eye.

I found this article that says all dogs have mites, but the mites aren't a problem unless the equilibrium is upset or the immunity to them is compromised. They may be transferable from dog to dog:

I believe RachelandSadie has a lot of experience with this. I'm not sure if it affected Bentley's eye but you may want to ask her about it.

I understand the emotional rollercoaster you have been on, and this was a totally unexpected diagnosis, but be happy! It's treatable and Teddy is going to be as perfect as ever. :)

OMGOODNESS why did they have to put that horrible animated graphic of a mite?! I don't think Teddy will sleep with me tonight!

Poor Teddy...maybe it was because he had conjuctivitis and that made him more suceptible to the mites?

Sorry, I really didn't mean to upset you. Human have little critters on their eyelashes too. :) You remind me of an episode of Northern Exposure in which the female lead refused to kiss the doctor after he told her about the bugs in human eyelashes.
