I re-read some of the possible causes of Teddy's condition, and they are many and varied, including things that only an ophthalmologist is likely to diagnose. Did your vet test for dry eye? When an eye does not produce enough tears, it will instead produce boogers/infection to try to protect the eye. Being on an antibiotic salve or drops can mask the problem. You might be saving a lot of grief if you go ahead and call an opthalmologist Monday morning. At the very least, you will have peace of mind. |
On a positive note, dry eye is probably not likely since Teddy has not had a corneal ulcer. Sending positive thoughts and prayers for your little Teddy. |
Since you are currently on medication to treat the problem, I might wait until you finish this treatment until you see an opthamologist. Then, if it works there is not need to see one and if it doesn't you can tell them what has been tried and didn't work. We had tried a few medications that failed before being referred to UT and this was helpful in better diagnosing a treatment for her. As for the boogies going away, Maddie did this for about 2-3 years. I have pictures of her just last year where her eye was clear as a bell then, suddenly, mucus would return and I was back to cleaning it and lubricating it countless time a day. I hope this ointment works for Teddy and you don't need to see a specialist but I would definitely seek and Optho if this does not work. Has Teddy had the Schimer test done? What were his ratings? |
Thank you guys for your comments. I have no idea what might be wrong with him, and like you mentioned I have also read through the possible issues that result in blepharitis and the list is too long to have any idea where the problem is originating from... MaddiesMommie I think I will wait out the 10 days like you suggested. As you mentioned, it's the only way to "narrow" down the diagnosis by indicating the medication he has taken and hasn't worked. Teddy has not had a Schimer test done...the one thing that I think it might be is some type of seasonal allergies because he had no issues with mucus or anything during the winter months...it only developed starting spring...but what do I know? All I know, is that I'm on Day 4 on the medication and I see no difference in the red inflammation around the eye and it's just really upsetting :( The green-booger like mucus has gone down and now if any comes out it's whitish...but that's about it. The previous eye drops also got rid of the mucus but it was only a temporary solution because they just came back again and now with the red ring around the outside of his eye... Quote:

Rosey, I can relate to your frustration and concern. After what Max went through, I think it will be a long time before I stop worrying about his eyes. I thought Max had allergies and was reacting to the incredible pollen "storms" we had during the month before he was diagnosed with ectopic cilia, hair under the eyelid. He had excessive tearing on and off in the one eye, no abnormal boogers. The corneal ulcers he had before that point, I thought were my fault. I thought that I gotten shampoo, conditioner, or topknot gel in his eyes. Those things just made an existing problem worse. I am keeping Teddy in my prayers that he heals soon, and if not that you can get this figured out and get him on the road to recovery. |

I just took a picture of Teddy's eye. The inflammation is getting worse. His eye looks really swollen now. I'm going to have to call an opthamalogist tomorrow and hope they can figure out what's wrong with him. :( |

Does the eyeball itself look swollen? Or is just the surrounding areas? The first would be an emergency. |

Poor baby! Call the specialist first thing in the morning and get Teddy in right away. Keep us posted. |
Poor Teddy. :( Definitely get him seen by a specialist tomorrow! |

I am pretty certain this has nothing to do with allergies and/or food! |
There are many possibilities of what may be causing this. The specialist should be able to determine the cause readily. I will keep Teddy and you in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy resolution of this problem. |
Yes, there are; but I believe a food allergy would affect both eyes. Just a thought. I certainly would be at a specialist tomorrow, though. The only one I have ever had was demodectic mange but it did not look that inflammed. |

Although I trust my vet with more eye stuff than I would most general docs/surgeons, this case I would be off to the specialist. |
Ladyjane, on the website you sent me there was a long list of possible reasons for blepharitis and food allergies was one of them...so I was just thinking about his diet and any possible changes that may have contributed to it. The only reason I'm brainstorming is because it's the only thing I can do right now...I feel really useless and I hate that I've been giving him medicine for five days and it hasn't made him any better. I'm really frustrated/upset right now so I'm sorry if my paragraph isn't very coherent. Maximo, thank you for your thoughts and prayers...I will be calling the opthamologist tomorrow morning and I pray that they can take me in because I don't really know how it works. Quote:

I will be praying for him and will look forward to your update tomorrow. Do try to get a good night's sleep! :) Oh...and they should get you in for an eye infection! :) |
Sorry...I missed all of your posts while I was typing. Yeah, that's why I didn't think it was a food allergy either, because liek you said it should affect both eyes. I think I was more HOPING that it was a food allergy...because at least that can easily be rectified. I've been to every single vet in Tallahassee and I have yet to find one that I am 100% comfortable with...and unfortunately I've already ran out of vets. That is why I am constantly on here asking you guys for your advice because I just don't feel 100% confident with any vet here. I don't think they're terrible or anything...I just don't know what it is...I'm rarely someone to question authority but when it comes to my dog...I just feel that I need to find someone that I'm 100% confident in. Anyways, I will keep you guys posted tomorrow. You guys don't understand how much it means to me that you care about Teddy. I'm tearing up right now because I think I would be a total nut case right now if I didn't have your support. THanks again. |
You were clear Rosey, and we know allergies are on the list. We just think it is probably something else at this point. I have been in your shoes, trying to figure things out and desperately wanting to fix things for my baby. Try not to drive yourself nuts, and try not to read too much on the Internet. I can tell you from experience that it will make you worry more for no reason. Try to get some rest and give Teddy some gentle hugs from me and the Maxman. :) |
I agree with LJ, the office should take you right away. Be clear about his current condition and that this is the second time around with an problem. All I have to do it say "eye" to our general vet's office, and they want us there right away. A specialist should be just as accommodating. |
Be sure to mention that the eye swelled more today, even with medication. |

Poor Teddy :( I hope you can reach an ophthalmologist early tomorrow and get him in as soon as possible. I'll be looking for your updates. |
The opthamalogists are only in town Wednesdays and Thursdays!!!!!! |

How does the swelling looks today? I wonder if you should have your regular vet take a look today while you are waiting to see the specialist. It's a tough call, especially because of what you indicated last night that you don't have 100% confidence in any of the vets you have tried. Plus, you don't want unnecessary treatment or the wrong treatment. If you do see a regular vet today or tomorrow, he/she should be understanding that you intend to see a specialist. |
I would definitely have the regular vet look at it; but make an appt for the specialist on Wednesday! |
