Sick Little Wiley Coyotee :(Hello to all!!! I am new on Yorkie Talk and I sure am having trouble getting around to find things on this site, but I am sure I will manage in time. Here is my story on my little guy and if anyone could give me any info on any of the problems my little may have... I would appreciate any responses... I purchased my little yorkie boy from a breeder in Georgia off her website. I do not tend to put her down in any way, however, I am upset with the whole experience. My main concern is getting my baby boy better. He was sent to me by plane on 04/20/11 on Delta flight from Georgia to Minnesota. He had a Health Certificated dated 04/19/11 that he was healthly to fly and 1# 10oz weight. His birthday 02/05/11 making him 10 1/2wks when he arrived on 04/20/11 3pm. He was scared of course and didn't want to come out of the kennel. Cute little boy, but felt like walking bones with hair. He was given Nutrical right away. I noticed that his food breeder sent with him was not Eukanuba and Puppy Chow which set off an alarm. She didn't send his Vet Shot records either which worried me more. His ears were dirty inside and he was shedding alot. We had a 3 1/2 hour ride home. He did drink water, but would not eat. When we got home, he would drink... but wouldn't eat. I stayed up with him most the night making sure he got water and nutrical and tried to get him to eat but no luck. He was only 1# 8.7oz when I weighed him at home. I took him in to Animal Hospital very next morning at 8am emergency basis. Only 17hours after I picked him up from airport. His Vet Doctor took him back right away and took blood. His blood sugar level should be at 300-400 is what they said and his was only at 34 .. I was so upset. the Doctor said he was extremely thin, hardly no muscle mass and just bones. He was very worried he wouldn't make it through. They did a fecal smear and found Coccidiosis & Campylobacter infection and he was put on ALBON & AMOXICILLIN for 7 days. They kept him the rest of the day to get his levels up and give food every hour by syringe. I picked him up at 4pm and he was well enough to go home. I had to feed him by syringe each hour as well. 3ml AD food mixed with a bit of water to help go down. Two days later, he startled us all by screaming or crying terribly and I picked him up and he wouldn't respond and continued to scream... then he went limp on me and I thought he died right there in my arms because he wasn't breathing well and eyes rolled back in his head. Took him to Animal Hospital right away and by the time I got him there... he was sitting up and fine. Both me and the Vet Doctor were Confused. The vet said that he might have had a sezure. After this episode, he seemed to have a runny nose and this cough now and then and it kept getting worse and would chock. He was brought back after seven days on his meds for his infections and his Cocidiosis was clear, but still had the Campy... so more meds. I just took him in yesterday to check his Campy and it was finally clear. He also took a smear of his ears and a smear of his nasal and found that he had yeast in ears and put on drops for 10days. He also put him on Childrens Benidrel for sinus/allegy problems. The lose of his hair he said could be from all the stress and meds and what he has been through. So here I sit still wondering if my baby is going to be ok. Thinking a healthly puppy would arrived to me after paying so much for him and I am paying vet bills after vet bills to get him better. :( I talked to the breeder and said that she was sorry for not sending him with the Eukanuba because she forgot it and had to purchase puppy chow to send him with something to eat and she completely forgot his shot records and would send them by mail, but I still haven't gotten them and it has been 15days waiting for them. She said he was healthy and couldn't understand why he was so sick with all the problems. She said she would replace puppy with another if he died of life threating congenital defect, but would not ship by plane. I don't know what to do.... |
Hi, Welcome to YT, At the risk of sounding absolutely heartless, I think you have two choices. One, continue to follow your vet's suggestions to get your new puppy healthy, and pray, pray, pray that he makes it. Knowing he might have some health concerns for the rest of his life, because I think from the story you are telling...You have been victimized by a RIP OFF! I don't think I would believe she forgot to send the Eukanuba...I think she feeds Puppy Chow. I don't believe the puppy has been to a vet...and I think she knows it was unhealthy! Choice Two: Pursue legal options...try and return said puppy and get your money back... In either situation, please consider this an expensive learning experience. Before acquiring another puppy, please read through some of the great advice on finding a good and reputable breeder that is available on this site. Let us know how he does...I'm praying for a quick recovery for the poor guy. |
I'm so sorry that you and your puppy are going thru such a terrible time! I hope and pray he will be better soon and you have lots of happy times together. I would see if you can get the breeder to reimburse you for the vet bills. Good Luck! |
I would research the puppy lemon laws in your state. If it were me at this point, I would be too in love with the puppy to part with it. I can't believe a breeder shipped a puppy under 2 pounds. The one and only time we had a puppy sent to us via airplane, the breeder didn't send her until she was 16 weeks old- and even then it wasn't a great experience. |
I do not have any advice but I want to say I am praying for your little man!! |

After this episode, he seemed to have a runny nose and this cough now and then and it kept getting worse and would chock. Welcome to YT :) There are a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful members that will be able to offer you information as well as support. Your breeder sounds pretty questionable to say the very least. She sent you a sick puppy and whether or not the issues are genetic or not she should be helping with his medical bills. At less than 2 lbs he was entirely too small to be put onto a plane and he was also too young to have left his mother. The above quote is the most concerning to me about your story and suggests what could be a very serious condition. Did your vet do any further testing or suggest an MRI or CT Scan? This test can help to either include or exclude several things and probably should be done. Has this happened again? As for a replacement puppy is your breeding going to pay for the above testing to be done? If it were me I look into the Puppy Lemon Laws in your state and proceed from there. How much did you pay for him and what is your breeders name? |
He was way too small to be shipped. He needs to have a bile acid test done to check his liver function. Yorkies especially tiny ones are susceptible to having liver shunt. I would not take a replacement puppy from this breeder if you return him I would get a refund |
I agree with everyone. If it were me, I wouldn't send him back for fear of what this person who shipped you a sick, too tiny dog in the first place whould do with him. This "breeder" is obviously not credible, so who knows what might happen to him, if he even survived a plane ride. I very highly doubt this puppy was healthy when they sent it (some of these people have shady vets "on their side" to sign health certificates, sad but true)and even if he was, he was WAY too small and young for a plane ride. That being said, I would 110% pursue legal action. You said you paid alot for him, I have no doubt you did and I can guess at the price. As was said, there are "puppy lemon laws" that vary by state. After what you paid for him in addition to the large vet bills you no doubt have and will continue to have at least in the short term, it would be absolutely worth it to persue getting every single penny back and maybe even then some for the vet bills. I've never persued something like that, so I don't have specific advise other than to start looking into it. Also, hopefully you persuing a refund and legal action against this person will possibly help someone else from being ripped off and going through what you are. It's so very sad and unfortunate that people like that are able to make money and cause such trama to these poor dogs and their unsuspecting new owners. I stick to the basic rule that I would never ever purchase a puppy sight unseen, especially if it were going to be shipped to me, they're living animals, not merchandise and frankly, I don't even understand why it's legal. I feel bad for you and your poor little puppy:(, hopefully he'll come around and be ok. Sounds like you are able to handle the expense of his vet care, so keep that up, follow any advise from your vet, and absolutely fight to get your money back. If it were me also, I'd make darn sure to spread the word of how awefull this "breeder" is, someone's reputation would be ruined at my hands to prevent it from happening again. There's a very good chance it was a puppy mill and should be shut down anyway. Good luck sweety, hope everything works out for you. |
Wow, you have a mess & to be honest I would NOT want another pup from this breeder as she/he obviously does not have her pups best interest at heart. The screaming in pain has me very concerned as there a few congenital defects this breed can have. AAI and Chiari are a couple & as someone else has said , your pup will need X-ray and MRI to see these things. However if the pup was given any injections, this could be the reason for the screaming as they often become sore at the injection site but I would start with an X-ray ro rule out AAI at the very least. And Welcome to YT ! sorry it's under these circumstances though. |
Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents here, but If Im not mistaken I think she has to provide health records in order to put the puppy on the plane? I believe since he flew cargo, she must provide health records to send him to anyone. Are you sure they are /were not taped to his kennel when he arrived. The " choke" could be kennel cough I hope your vet check that out? If he is still not eating , you may want to try a little boiled chicken and some rice, or add some organic fat free chicken broth ( warmed slightly ) to his food. Eukanuba, puppy chow, still the same crappy food. Id switch him slowly to a better food, Keep in touch with your vet and send the breeder your vet bills!! She may or may not pay.. Never buy a dog over the internet , there are MANY excellent breeders YTCA website! |
Tosha Smith Yorkies in Georgia, tcups, Christian Breeder, Yorkshire Terriers She said that she has the contract and does not refund any money. The contract is on her site. She will not pay for vet bills. |

Regarding Little Wiley Coyotee I purchased from Tosha Smith from Georgia on her website Yorkies in Georgia, tcups, Christian Breeder, Yorkshire Terriers she has her contract right on her sight and she does not offer refunds. I am still waiting for the shot records She said she was sorry for not sending him with the Eukanuba and that she forgot to bring the shot record to send with him. Tammy |
Well, not to sound heartless, but you must have read that prior to purchasing the dog...soo.... It sounds like you really wanted the Eukanuba, its not to expensive so if your really stuck on that food , you will have to get some. Keep in touch with your vet and pray the " screaming" is nothing serious and just a soar spot from a shot he must have received prior to traveling? Other then that he is really young and yorkies are very picky eaters. Try the chicken broth or mix a little wet food with the dry. You can also try the boiled chicken with a little rice to try to get him to eat. Good luck with your new baby. I hope it all works out! |
The 1st clue that she is NOT a reputable breeder is the fact that she advertises T-CUPS as NO reputable breeder would EVER advertise T-CUP anything for sale. No matter what her sales agreement says, there is the possibility that IF your/her state has puppy lemon laws she will be responsible for the vet bills & a total refund of the pup without the pup being returned to her. You seriously need to look into this. In the mean time I would have the pups neck X-ray done to rule out AAI as without treatment casting/surgery your pup will not survive. I worry as your vet could not figure out the cause of the screaming episode and if it were from an injection, I would surly think a vet would think of that and check for it. Too many vets are not familiar with AAI and this should DEFF be discussed with your vet. |

http://www.bah.state.mn.us/animals/d...on-law-806.pdf Georgia also has a Puppy Lemon Law as well. Understanding the Law Maybe you need to bring this to her attention. As a Christian Yorkie Breeder I am sure she will do right by your puppy. ;) |
I want to thank each and every one of you who responded to my post. Every little thing helps and it is nice to know that others care. :) I have had this little guy since 04/20/11. (17days) He is 13wks today. He has been eating ok for the past 10 days. He reached 1# 10oz on May 3rd, but dropped back down to 1# 9.8oz today. I try to get him to eat his dry puppy food which is a mix of Eukanuba small breed puppy & Royal Canin Yorkshire 29 Puppy every 3 or 4 hours. If he doesn't eat at least a little, then I offer wet Cesar puppy which he eats everytime. I have offered him the yolk from a boiled egg when he wasn't eating around Easter and he liked it and ate some. I gave him boiled chicken about an hour ago just because we were having chicken tonight and he loved it and gobbled it up. He seemed to get a boost of energy about half hour after and played with all his todays. SO CUTE!!! I even let him out to get fresh air and run in the grass a bit. He really enjoyed that but was tuckered out quick. I didn't realize that Eukanuba was crappy food as I am only able to get it at our vet or petco and 2 feed stores here. I thought crappy food was at places like walmart and so on. What is a good food for a Yorkie??? Is Royal Canin good? Yes, my vet did mention an x-ray when he had his episode on the third day that I had him, however, he thought we should wait to see if anything else accured before doing one as by the time I brought him in, he was totally fine. I will take this advice and get this done and check for Chiarie or AAI and check for Liver Fluck (not sure how to spell).. Does anyone know what would cause shedding? He has been losing his coat since I got him and he is getting thin. I might have a bald yorkie on my hands before long. YIKES!!! He goes back in for vaccinations May 16th or 17th and Vet will do further testing. Just trying to gather info before Wiley's next visit. If there is anything else VERY important I should know about yorkies... please let me know. I am trying my best and I have read lots about them, but seems like others have more and more info that I have not read about and is very knowledgeable. Thanks again... Tammy:hearts6: |
How sad this breeder sent you a sick puppy. I hope all works out for you and your little furbaby gets better. I think she should pay for your vet bills considering what you are going through. |
Not sure about the hair loss but yorkies don't shed so this should deff be looked into. It may have been from being malnourished , is he still loosing hair ? Does he itch & scratch allot ? Good to hear he's doing better though. |
I'm just seeing this, and am glad to hear your baby is doing better. So you got him from Smiths Country Biewers and Yorkies in GA? I wanted their kennel name in this thread in case anyone is doing their breeder research and will see what happened to you. You are not alone, it seems like we have read about a lot of puppies that arrive in their new home sick. It is such a shame that this happens so often. |
Im so sorry for your problems with your new baby, I hope things are better soon |
good food, lots of lovin are the biggest, no rabies shots at the same time as their other shots, to much for the little ones, keep the nutrical on hand, feed several times a day and other things you will learn along the way. They sometimes get the enviromental allergies like my little guy, they have sensitive tummys and nothing with ham too fatty they are prone to pancreatitis, enjoy they leave pawprints on your heart in a big hurry |
I'm am seriously praying for your puppy. Please don't send him back to the breeder. Your new furbaby needs you. I would try to go after the breeder for a refund without the return of the puppy. Meanwhile, listen to your vet and to your heart. Give him lots of kisses for me. Keep up posted with updates. |

Have you tried wetting the dry food a bit to soften it for him? And then mix it with the Cesar's? I would not vaccinate this puppy until he's 100%. What you described may have been a seizure, and at least an xray should be done asap. Vaccines are very strong and only healthy puppies should receive them. In the meantime, keep him in your arms when not at home. Also, he should weigh at least 2# to get vaccines. Is your vet experienced with Yorkies or, at least small dogs? As he has problems, it would be best to get him on a minimum vaccine schedule (see Dr Dodds Vaccine Protocol). Also, wait to see the records from the breeder (if she's still sending them). Here's a link: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...-overview.html Please read and learn about vaccines before you take him back in to the vet. There are other links in the Library, one is to Dr Dodds Vaccine Protocol, and some for general puppy care, etc. I'll keep your puppy in my prayers.... |
I would also be wary of vaccinations unless he is feeling well. They tax the immune system. Also, my vet likes to separate the vaccines and give one at a time in a tiny dog. |
Little Wiley seems to be doing fine and playing and happy as ever. I haven't seen him this happy since we got him so this might be a good sign, but his cough still worries me. The children's benedryl seems to help a bit, but not like I hoped. He seems to have a runny nose when he gets his cough and sounds congested. The vet said it was sinus/allergies... but I wonder if it is more. He weighs 1# 11.2oz today...WOW.. must have been the chicken & tuna I fed him yesterday. He is eating Eukanuba small breed puppy and Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier 29 puppy but I am hearing that these food are garbage. What is a good food for him then??? I just thought since I couldn't purchase them from a walmart or any store... that they were better, but I guess the corn isn't good. I have heard Orijen is good and I would need to order online because no one sells it near me. He gets his first vaccinations next week now that the vet thinks he is better. He will be 14wks then and I can't even go off of when the breeder said she gave the shots because she hasn't sent them yet and how do know if she even really gave them. really upsets me that some people could care less about a puppies life as long as they see $$$. He is still losing his hair and getting thin. I posted 3 photos of him on my profile if anyone wants to see. I love this site. There are so many nice people and lots of information. I just need to add some friends and I still am having a hard time getting around the site and knowing where everything is and where to post and so on. Tammy |
I had a peek at the pics - he is a cutie! Glad to hear he seems to be feeling a little better. Hope he continues to make a full recovery from all he's been through. He seems like a little fighter and it also seems like he found a wonderful human to help him - lucky boy! |
