I think Dr. Dodds recommends giving parvo and distemper as individual vaccinations and not in a combination vaccine. |

Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV (e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy DPV) DPV means Distemper ParvoVirus The Progard puppy DPV is all in one vaccine Rabies, killed 3-year product (give 3-4 weeks apart from distemper/parvovirus booster) If she wanted them separated she would state it like she did above for the yearly boosters For dogs who have had problems, the vaccines are separated. If a pup has a problem with a vaccine, it occurs within minutes to 1 hour (allergic reaction) of getting the vaccine, not a day and a planeride later. Titers would be an option. I totally agree with those articles. There is risk involved with vaccines, but the basic immunity needs to be established in all dogs first. http://www.dogs4dogs.com/puppy-shots.htm Also these are core vaccines. Cv (Corona Virus) is not a core vaccine and is not needed for pups over 6 weeks old. |

Gidget's cough is finally doing some better (knock on wood) on Tussagon. That is an opiate, however (hydrocodone), so I am not sure how appropriate that would be for a little one your size. I take it Wiley is still coughing, poor little guy! |

Thanks. I will continue to keep little Wiley (and his mom) in my prayers, especially for his vet appt tomorrow. Hopefully, you will get something to help this cough. I know what you mean, that aggressive coughing scares you in such a little thing! Her x-rays were normal, too. They are leaning towards either allergies or an infection in her trachea now. Good luck to you tomorrow. We're going to be believing this appt is going to get to the bottom of things for Wiley. |

As her cough got worse, she too could not bark without coughing. In fact, she couldn't really do that litte whine/wimper she does, it was very faint. Vet said it was affecting her voice because her throat was really sore, like a person gets. We started wetting down her dry food so it did not aggravate her sore throat. We also started giving her water at room temp. We didn't give her milkbones or anything like that that could aggravate/scratch her sore throat. He also said to keep her quiet and not let her vocalize much or run around much which would make her pant. Those measures, plus Clavamox w the addition of Tussagon, finally started working on that terrible cough. The antibiotic w Delsym did absolutely nothing, in fact she got worse. Hope this helps you. |

Thanks for the information on what you have been doing and giving Gidget. Every little bit of info helps... Wishing Gidget a fast recovery |
It does sound like you purchased you pup from a puppy mill. They sell online as well as ship to pet shops around the country. They have all kinds of ways to give you records that are a total lie. It does not take much to get documentation to ship a pup. All it needs to say is that the pup was checked and is up to date on shots. They also give inaccurate AKC registration documents. They are disgusting, heartless people who treat these creatures horribly and care nothing about the people they are harming either. This is why finally many states are starting to crack down on these people but it is too little too late. I hope once things settle down for you that you do everything you can to shut this monster down for good. |
Best wishes for Wiley's vet visit. I am glad to hear he is eating better. Buster too came with many health issues. I supplemented with Colostrum to help strengthen his immune system. http://www.fetchdog.com/learn-connect/dog-resource-library/nutrition-supplements/Colostrum-A-holistic-treatment-option-for-dogs/D/300600/P/1:5:55:602/I/AR000010454 the brand I used is Flying Basset The Flying Basset :: 100% Pure Colostrum Powder -4oz $16.95 . My vet also has me give Buster vitamin C to help fight off infection and boost his immune system. |
Just checking in to see how Wiley is doing. |
Update on wiley Wiley's xray turned out JUST FINE!!! Made me happy to know that his trachea tube is perfect, lungs and heart are clear and fine, no pneumonia... The Doctor thinks it is allergies to something now. When I got him, his hair was shedding. He was sent with Puppy Chow and she said he was eating Eukanuba and Little Champions wet food. She said she bathed him in Adams shampoo. I slowly switched him to Royal Canin for Yorkies with Eukanuba, but that didn't seem to help his cough or hair loss so I slowly switched him to ACANA but still no change. I bathe him in Yorkie Splash that I get online. I was using this oatmeal shampoo for puppies until I got the Yorkie Splash. Maybe he is allergic to that, but he had all the symptoms when I got him so it just doesn't make sence. I wash his blankets in ALL or Borax and hot water. I do not give him treats at this point. He gets Nylabones to chew on that are not edible and he has his toys. He drinks Purified room temp. water. He does not get table craps, but I have given him boiled chicken & egg yolk from boiled egg when he finally started to eat on his own to get him to eat more. A few days ago I gave him bits of apple without the peel. (it was cute to listen to him crunch on those) I can not think of anything else besides his meds he was on for his two infections that he no longer has. He was taking Albon & Amoxicillon for that. He does get drops in his ears for yeast problem called Triotic/Otibiotic and Metoclopramide for regurgitation but only if he is really coughing and choking because then he throws up stomach crap from GI. He was given Hydroxzine 50mg (give0.2ml twice daily) liquid form for allergies yesterday. Yesterday was 1 MONTH ago that I got him. I have had this little guy for 1 whole month and he weighed in at 2# at the vet yesterday too. They were just excited about his weight as I was. They all think it is sad that he is having such trouble and losing his hair, but they are happy that he has a good mommy that is taking good care of him. |
I know, it drives you nuts trying to get help when they are ill, and it sometimes seems like they're just guessing. Gidget's x-rays were all clear too for trachea, lung fields, heart size. The Tussagon is finally stopping her cough. We have had three cough free days (knock on wood)! I've been feeding her wetted down Royal Canine #27 (this is what her breeder sent w her). I had to laugh, we are also giving room temp distilled water! Her activities have also been limited (no walks, rough play, etc.). Glad to hear about Wiley's weight gain. I think that speaks volumes of how well cared for he is and how happy he is! Have you seen any difference since he got the Hydroxine for allergies? We will keep praying for little Wiley and his mom. I think you have done an absolutely wonderful job w nursing him back! |
His Doctor gave a little chuckle when he brung up Wiley's xray on the computer because it was so tiny because Wiley is such a little guy. I sure love Wiley's vet.... he is the most loving & caring vet to animals I have ever met!!! |

I don't know about the sinus thing but I would try not to bath him too much at this point. Too much bathing right now could dry out his skin and cause shedding. He has been on a lot of meds for a little guy and that is harsh on his system and will effect the coat some. Just rinse off his feet or butt if he gets them dirty and keep him warm of course. This little guy must be quite a fighter to get go through all that he has had to endure. I hope the sinus thing clears up soon. |
You say you give him chicken and is there chicken in his food ? as lots of dogs are allergic to chicken. Also , and I know it may be hard to find out but did the breeder give him a bordatella vaccination through the nose ? as it can cause all of the symptoms that you describe if they have a reaction to it. Some dogs are fine with it but some have a reaction to it & it damages their sinus tissue & if this happens there in no cure for it , only treatment. |

Also mine developed an antibiotic resistant infection so my vet did a nasal swab & sent to the lab. It turned out to be resistant to most antibiotics except Baytril. After a round of the Baytril his coughing went away but it took 3 or 4 months for his coat to start looking good again. |
Wiley Update Wiley is doing wonderful, gaining weight & muscle mass, and eating like a piggy. He is 2# 2.2oz this morning. I went out and bought Acana Grasslands Grain free for him and he LOVES it. I wanted to try something without chicken to see if this helped his cough. I started him on Acana Wild Prairie Grain free which has chicken. He has eaten the Grasslands for two days now and I have noticed that he has not been coughing much at all. I also stopped all meds which has been two days now as the meds are only to be given as needed. He was on Metoclopramide for regurgitation as needed Hydroxyzine for allergies I also rubbed his body with organic virgin coconut oil trying to use small amounts everywhere but his pads and face. He wanted to lick my fingers the whole time... which is good for him anyway. He enjoyed the rub down of coconut and fell asleep while I was applying it. He looks greesy, but he isn't as dry and hasn't been itching much and his coat is easier to comb. He has the cotton type hair I think. Gets matted easy. I have to comb it daily. My fingers are crossed hoping that he will continue to keep that cough away with the new flavor of Acana and maybe he won't need his AS NEEDED meds. It has been rainy here the past two days. I wonder if that is helping his cough??? |
Acana Grasslands has chicken fat in it though.... maybe it isn't the chicken. Maybe he just has allergies to me.. LOL |
Glad to hear Wiley is doing better! He is such a cute little boy! |
I am beginning to think that some of the foods just have too much grain in them. Hopefully grain free food will be a big help to him. Regular chicken is pumped full of various drugs and they are fed an unhealthy diet. The chickens that are grass fed are naturally fed and are not kept in the little cages and subjected to all the garbage our chicken is. Maybe that will make a difference for your little guy. Eating food that is as God intended will help build his bodies defenses. Glad to hear he is past the 2# mark. The oil on his skin must have been a relief to him. |
I a so happy he seems to be doing better, I have been following his story and been so worried about him Hugs |
Wiley is such a lucky boy to have such a loving mom. The one good thing that comes out of a rough start like this is that I feel you will have a stronger bond with Wiley because of all the extra nursing you are giving to him. Hey anyone would love to have a coconut oil rub down! Congratulations on the weight gain and that his coughing is decreasing. He really is the sweetest boy. It makes me so happy to see him improving. Best wishes to Wiley and his wonderful mom! |
Mr. Wiley is doing wonderful today. Only one cough episode this morning which was't bad at all. Day 3 with no meds and eating Acana Grasslands still gaining weight... 2pounds 2.6oz today:D:thumbup::happyboun |
