ACL tears are very common in dogs with LP's. I know it's scary, but it sounds like surgery is the best choice. I am so glad you saw a specialist!

DH drove, Maggie stayed home and that never happens. Maggie usually goes with us everywhere. He cried and stressed really bad during the 45 minute drive. It was worse after we got there. I'm not sure how well he will do next week. I saw LJ while we were there and she was offering words of encouragement. As far as the surgery goes, I feel like he is in good hands with Dr. Beale. He really knows his stuff.

I am sorry to hear Buster needs surgery. Pixie had it last year and the surgeon said the same thing about the ACL. Pixie had never been away and never was created before surgery. She did much better than I expected. After about a week the surgeon said I could put Roxie her sister in with her and that really helped. I will keep Buster in my prayers for a safe procedure and speedy recovery.

ACL tear! I knew I got it wrong as soon as I hit submit. It's been a long day and I've been worried sick about Buster. He will have surgery on both legs next week. This little boy is not one to slow down. I'm worried about having both legs done at the same time, I am in way doubting Dr. Beale, I'm concerned about Buster's mental state now.

Actually, I think it's a good idea to do both legs at once and have it over and done with in one surgery. Once he's healed, he'll be like a new doggie! I wasn't doubting him when I asked if he was doing one leg at a time. I just didn't know what he'd do.

Thanks for the well wishes. Dr. Beale doesn't feel that it is necessary to keep him in a crate. He doesn't want him going outside to potty without being on a leash, he said he would not feel like going up and down the stairs but I will gate them anyway. I thought he would need to be kept in a crate but he said no.

Oh, I didn't get that impression at all. I'm glad he's doing both legs at the same time, I say that now! I hope he will be like a new doggie afterwards. It's sad to watch him go down the stairs on three legs. I'm excited for Buster but at the same time I'm worried about him stressing. I know this sounds stupid, but I don't want him to think he's not coming back home.

I think the first 24 hours they are pretty sedated between the surgery and pain meds and sleep most of the time. When I went to pick Pixie up the vet said the techs spent a lot of time holding her. I think it is harder on us sometimes. Pixie just had a check up and the vet said her knee was doing great. That's great he doesn't need to be crated, that was the hardest part.

I believe we all worry about them thinking they won't be coming back home again. You know, Thanksgiving Day afternoon, 2008, Kacee saw two big dogs cut through a corner of our yard and she went running out into her yard like a maniac about 90 mph. There's a circular bed in the center of the yard. She turned just the other side of it and tore her rear knee tendon completely in two. She didn't have LP, either. She had never been crated. It wasn't necessary to crate her, either. She was just under orders to not jump or run like the wild yorkie she is! She did fine and you'd never know it ever happened.

Sounds like Buster, how fast can I run...80 mph, 90 mph? He will be fine, the surgeon seems really ggod, I just need to tell myself to breath. Not jumping or running is the orders for Buster. That will be hard for him! He wants to be first and the only way to do that is run the fastest.
