Chemical burns are prone to developing secondary infections. It's important that a vet actually examine the areas and rule out that an infection is already present. Putting a salve over it can actually make it more likely to develop an infection because the balm can promote the growth of bacteria and fungi. I wouldn't do it unless you got the ok from the vet after he/she has actually seen it.

i got a major chemical burn a few years back with welts as big as a dollar bill & raised 1/2"...the pain was unbearable, i literally could not sleep or do anything. the doc had to prescribe something to calm it down and i had welts for months. please take your baby to the vet & get her an RX, it's got to be horrible walking on those poor paws even if they are wrapped.
i hope she heals quickly.
Agreed. I got a chemical burn at work and it hurt like h-e-c-k!

Your first post you are asking about balms but 12 hrs later you then say you already ordered some the previous day. Which is it

Post #14~Again your words and not mine.

Posts #23 you then go back to saying all four paws are burned and then say you called your vet on a Sunday in the late afternoon. If my vet were that awesome to be available on a Sunday afternoon I would be running to see her! But then again my vet would want me to bring a dog in to be seen if I called suspecting chemical burns.

I'm sorry but I cannot justify anyone looking for FREE medical advice on the internet to replace professional advice from a LICENSED VETERINARIAN. In addition you have changed your story several times in the matter of just a few hours as you can see from YOUR quotes above. There is nothing more that I or the other members that said to take her to the vet for proper medical treatment could possibly offer to attend to your dog withOUT a vet being properly consulted with an office visit. It is evident from this entire thread that you do not plan on taking all of the advice you have been given. Good luck and I will hold out hope you get her to the vet as you have been advised while seeking medical care via YT
I SOAK MY DOGS PAWS EVERY OTHER DAY!!!! BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALLERGIES!!!!!! I WAS SOAKING HER PAWS EVEN BEFORE THEY WERE BURNED!!!!! CHRIST! i was simply saying YES i have soaked her paws even before she was burned with BLEACH. you know i am not gonna sit here and argue with what i said and what i didnt say.

ONE day before i noticed her paws were burned,__ i soak my dogs paws in betadine every other day because they get itchy from walking outside, something i have heard is good to do from a holistic vet. the next day i noticed her paws were pink and when i touched one finger print, it looked like she was in pain. i bought the paw balm thinking it was possibly just dry. "did not know it was bleach" UNTIL AFTER i figured it out. are you crazy? you should be a flippin investigator or something. o0o0o i am a horrible owner and dont want to take my dogs to the vet, its not a matter of money, both of my dogs have pet insurance. i called the emergency vet, and i told them, and they said it did not sound that serious but to wrap her paws and see in a few days it its goten better, if not to take her in.

got anymore questions? i am not even going to explain myself anymore. really, i went on yorkietalk to get opinions of what it could be before i even know it was from the bleach i did not simply go on here to get a "quick" fix. that is not what i was trying to do, i was simply CURIOUS to see if other yorkie owners have gotten the same thing. before realizing it was from bleach. thanks..

So, are the paws better? Or, are you going to the vet? Seems that most people here have advised that you let a vet examine these paws. Since you wanted opinions, perhaps that is a good start?
Good luck at the vet. Please let us know how things go.

lady jane, i took her to my vet and i just got back. the vet that i usually go to. She examined them and told me her paws are okay right now, she gave me some antibiotics in case they get infected. but she said there is a slim chance they will be since they arent "burnt" yet but if i didnt catch it in time and she just kept walking in the bleach it could've gotten worse. as of now they are just a little "tender" and pink and the vet said the skin will grow back but it will take some time. thank you everyone for expressing your opinions.

So glad you took her to the vet and she is on the road to recovery!

Hopefully she won't develop an infection, but it is good to have the antibiotics just in case.

Great news! Happy to hear that she will be fine. Thanks for the update. For the future, when cleaning, you could get some little booties for her...the rubber ones. One of our member sells them. AllDogBoots Dog Boots | Dog Shoes & Dog Booties
She also has cute little socks that might work for now if you want to keep her feet covered. I just purchased some for my granddog because he needed something on his feet.

I am glad you took her to the vet as well. i know that human chemical burns are extremely serious and cause great pain. Since you caught it in time, sounds like she will fine. Did the vet place her on any kind of pain med? If they were very burned , then theeir is a speical cream that humans use fromn the DR. I thought that perhaps it could be used for dogs too. Vytm the pads need to be wrapped to preven further damage. And infection is at a very high risk, because she has to walk on them everyday. Glad that your baby will be fine and you caught it early. Just remember in a case of a burn a layer of skin is peeled off, the worse the burn is the worse it becomes. But, in your case I think the vet would want you to watch her carefully for the next couple of weeks, and come back for a reheck.

I'm glad to hear she is on the mend and doing better.

For future reference you might want to give Musher's Secret a try. It is a wax you put on their paws and it creates a barrier protecting them from chemicals, salt, snow, etc. It even helps healing, makes the pad smoother and healthier and it is all natural and safe.

Question quick question?

Glad to hear she's doing well

This thread has me thinking though, are smaller dogs more prone to sensitivity to their paw pads from just normal "wear and tear"? I realize the OP most likely had an issue because of bleach, but I'm wondering about in general. I know to use "Safe Paws" in the winter instead of regular rock salt but other than that and obvious things like broken glass or something, I've never given paw protection much thought. I only ask because I see that there were alot of products such as a wax and booties being recomended. Just wondering if I should be proactive with Alice and get something for her pads for walks? I've never had a problem at all with my bigger dogs so never gave it any thought until now.

I think it all depends on where you walk her. I would say that if you walk her in the winter when there is a lot of salt and chemicals on sidewalks, that you might want to get protective booties for her.

#1, follow all the advise from these knowledgable and practiced "Yorkie Angels". I would only add one thing, review and evaluate all your cleaning products. Many of the floor cleaning products can also be absorbed through tiny feet and some are toxic. I bought a steamer for my tile floors and use only club soda on my carpet.

Loving a Yorkie is the best thing in my life. The advise and information I get from the pro's on this site is invaluable.
