| Sudden Hearing Loss I have a very active, hyper and happy 6 year old yorkie, Toby. Last Tuesday, 4-5-11, I took Toby to his 2nd teeth cleaning apt. He had his teeth cleaned in July, but the vet said he had a couple of teeth that needed to come out so he wouldn't get an infection. He said Toby could get an infection and it could travel to the eye and even the brain and cause bigger problems. I took him in around 8am and picked him up about 230pm. The vet said everything went well! We got home and Toby basically slept the rest of the day, which this is what he did when he got his teeth cleaned before. My husband and I worked Wednesday, all day. We got home that night and realized Toby still seemed, what we thought, groggy. We assumed it was taking the meds a little more time to get out of his system. Then on Thursday, we realized this wasn't normal. Toby couldn't hear us well and he wasn't his crazy, active self. He was scared of us and any time we went to touch him, it was like he was afraid we were getting on to him. Friday, he couldn't hear anything! He couldn't hear us calling him, the doorbell, our alarm, knocking on the door etc. Took him to the vet and he said he just didn't know what was wrong with him. He removed wax from Tobys ears and gave us an antibiotic drop to put in them. We have done this since Friday and he still can't hear anything. If anyone can enlighten me on what may be wrong with him, please do so. I am so worried about him and I can't imagine how he feels, living his life in silence all of a sudden. Thanks!! |

| That is awful and I am at a loss. Second opinion with a specialist in order. I will be praying for your baby.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so sorry. Are there any specialists that could check him out. My Nikki is almost blind and deaf (he's 17) and we try and approach him slowly as not to startle him. Hopefully Toby's hearing will return and he will be fine but they do adjust to deafness and blindness better than we think.

| Thanks guys! The vet said to come in tomorrow for a test to see if he has a liver shunt. He said this can happen at anytime during their life. Something, they don't know what, bring it to light. He said hearing loss isn't a sign of this but he wants to check anyway. I don't know what to think. I will keep you all posted though! Thanks for the kind words and prayers! |

| I'm sorry. You may want to see a neurologist and they can check him and perhaps help you and give you the answers you are looking for. I copied this for you. There is much more at the link: Acquired deafness occurs for any number of reasons. Some causes of hearing loss include: Excessive amounts of wax, dirt, hair or other material plugging the ear canal; inflammation or swelling of the ear canal; infections of the middle or internal ear; a torn or ruptured ear drum; loud noise; head trauma; ear mites; certain drugs; old age. | My vote would be for a second opinion with a neurologist. Sending prayers for your little one.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Do the ear drops contain gentamicin? If yes, call your vet and ask for soemthing else. In some dogs, genta can cause loss of hearing...which is usually temporary. Once the genta is discontinued, the hearing will usually return. This happened to my Wylie too...it really scared me; his hearing fully returned, but no more genta in his ears, ever! Keep us posted!

| Hey guys! Well, he went today and had a ton of tests done and everything came out ok. Apparently there is something called post anesthesia deafness. It is extremely rare. I found it on the net, the vet hadn't ever heard of it. He is acting more like himself today, which makes me soooo happy. I guess he just has to adjust, as do we. I have been told by several people that it is a lot harder on us than it is on them. They will adjust quickly. It is not going to come back, unless we are granted a miracle. As long as he doesn't get depressed about it and stays the same happy and active puppy he has always been, we will be fine. The vet did say he was going to speak with a neurologist and see what he thought. He said he would let us know what he finds out and if the neuro doc wants to see Tobe. I was just so happy to have my Toby back, it was very hard on me this past weekend and I know it was him as well. It was like we had lost our dog and brought home a different one! If anything changes or I find out anything else, I will let you all know! Thank you so much for the kind words and prayers. Toby and I appreciate it so much! |

| Try using different pitches when you call him.... maybe he can pick up on one not normally heard. You could also try pounding the floor with your hand to call him to you, he may feel the vibration through his feet...
