your response just broke my heart im so sorry. love tucker for as long as you can & just know you did what you could for your baby. i was so hoping to have a positive outcome for tucker. heaven is a wonderful place & he will no longer be suffering, you will for your loss but unfortunately there are some things we just can't fix. Bless you both, my thoughts & prayers are with you!!!!!:(

My wife and I are not so sure the vet is right with his diagnosis. Tucker is still eating quite well. He is not vomiting. He is losing weight terribly. His stomach is very swollen. I gave him some furosimide to take some of the fluid off him. He is very lethargic. The blood work has his urea at 20.4 and his creatinine is normal. It doesn't make sense. His creatinine should be really high if he was in kidney failure. Anyone have any suggestions, ideas?

First, I am so sorry Tucker is ill :(

You can always take him in for a second opinion to a specialist. I have no experience with any of this, so I can't offer any real advice.

Maybe there was a mistake with the blood work? Creatinine would be high in KF. Are you comfortable with your vet or do you think you should find another vet? I wish you all the best and hope you find some answers for Tucker.

The vet wants me to put him down because he thinks he's in renal failure. His creatinine is normal and he is not vomiting. How can that be normal in Kidney failure? We are trying to get another opinion although we have had two opinions already. He had an ultrasound and nothing showed up only a lot of fluid in the belly and chest.

Has he seen an internal medicine specialist? That's what my next step would be. Sending prayers that you find answers soon.

I am so sorry Tucker is so ill.

I would take him to an internist or a vet school, and definitely get a second opinion! You poor guys and poor Tucker.

My IG with cardiomyopathy is on furosemide and she gets bloodwork every three weeks. One purpose of it is to monitor her kidney because the furosemide can cause renal problems. None of the dogs I've have with renal failure have had fluid buildup in the abdomen. I would wonder about the liver values or his heart, too.

I think you are right to question the vet, although he may be right.

I gave Tucker 10mg of florosimide yesterday to alleviate the fluid. Today he is playful. I switched his diet a few days ago to high protein. He seems to be much better today. Not as bloated. More playful. I am keeping him on a high protein diet. We got the results from the specialist. He does not know what is causing the ascites. He is thinking protein nephropathy or enteropathy. We are not sure and because Tuck seems to be doing well we are still trying a new diet. We also had two other vet review his case, both say it is NOT Kidney related. We are going to another vet next week at another clinic. Will keep you all posted. Please continue with your prayers, very much appreciated!

Thank you for updating us, and most of all thank you for being such a compassionate and caring family for little Tucker. Unfortunately, I know close to nothing on the subject, but I am here to offer my support.

My one Cairn passed away from Cushings disease and this doesn't sound like a Cushings disease case. However, I'm so happy that you're getting second opinions in regards to Tucker!

Please keep us updated on his progress! Our thoughts and prayers are with you!:animal-pa

I'm definitely glad you're getting a second opinion. That was going to be my next suggestion to you. When my Brody was diagnosed with kidney failure, one of the symptoms was that he'd vomit about once a day. He was on Hill's k/d prescription diet for years before that as well. Once his levels went up as I said before when he started vomiting, our vet suggested we do Sub-Q injections. It relieved a lot of his symptoms. Run this past your vet but I'm not sure if it'd be recommended because his stomach is swollen and you already mentioned he had excess fluid. Brody didn't have a swollen stomach though and he stopped eating later in his diagnosis so his was different than what you described...
Did they tell you what his BUN level was?

Anyways, I'm sending lots and lots of prayers to Tucker. I hope you find some answers soon with all this. I know how hard it is :(

We heard back from one vet. He thinks it may be enteropathy. We have changed Tuck's diet to high protein, no fat. We have ordered multivitamins and yucca root to reduce swelling along with a natural diuretic. We will be seeing another specialist agian this coming week. I will keep you all posted.
