Sweet Peyton hurt his leg (all my fault, I am so ashamed!) I am so sad for my sweet boy. I am getting ready to head out to the emergency vet. Last night around 2 am I was taking my allergy medicine before I went to bed. I sat Peyton on a kitchen chair (stupidly!!!). He got excited and squirmed around and fell backwards onto the floor. :( This is ALL my fault. I feel so horrible. He cried a little at first, but stopped when I picked him up and comforted him. I took him upstairs and watched him for a while to see how he was. He was hungry, so he ate and drank, then went and laid down. He was not putting any wait on his little leg. It is the rear left leg. He sleeps with mope, so I took him to bed. This morning he is 100% his usual happy self. Still not putting weight on that leg though. I am usually smarter than this. I cannot believe I let him sit on that chair by himself. It all happened so fast. But, that is NO excuse. I am to blame. I am sharing in hopes that someone else might read this and not make the same mistake. It only takes a second for an accident to happen. Please say a prayer that his leg is just tender and not broke. Either way, I'm going to let the ER vet see him. I'll post an update when I get home. |
Oh no! Sweetie, accidents happen. Just get that little one to the vet and give us an update. Prayers and positive thoughts heading your way right now. Hugs! Judy |
Im praying. Hopefully its just brused. My Chachi was not putting weight on one of his legs once and it just was brused. Let us know what the emergency vet has to say and try not to be too hard on yourself it was an accident |
Yep, that is why they are called accidents! Don't beat yourself up. Hopefully it is just a contusion and he will be fine. Or...even LP..sometimes it can get aggravated by a fall and a couple of weeks of rest and anti-inflammatories and it is good as new. I hope that is it! Prayers for Peyton..and for you! |
We all do things we wish we could undo. You were either tired, or had your mind on something else. I hope that Peyton will be ok. Let me know what you find out. I'm really sorry.:( |
Sending positive thoughts your way for little Peyton and you. Hoping it is nothing serious. |
Hopefully it is nothing serious. Please update us when you get back from the vet. |
I'm here now...initial exam looked good. We are going to go ahead and do x rays just to be safe. Will update soon thanks for all the positive thoughts and prayers. I love this little guy so much. |
Prayers are with you and keep us informed. Hopefully only bad buise. |
Don't beat yourself up, it was a total accident. Sending prayers and well wishes to little Peyton. Positive thoughts for you. |
I agree don't beat yourself up over this. It is all so new when we get a wee little one and we learn the do's and don'ts and sometimes accidents happen. I am sure that you are an excellent mother and I am praying that he is ok:) |
Not great news... Well, they finally brought him back from x rays...it took so long. He has a fractured growth plate in his knee. :( I am glad we went ahead with the x ray. The initial exam was good, this was just to be sure. Anyhow, they said surgery was an option. Recovery from surgery is a couple weeks. The other option is to sedate him, wrap it, and bring in for checks and rewraps frequently. Based on the fracture she said it has a good chance to heal on it's own. It may take 4 weeks. If it does not heal on it's own, then we can do surgery. |

To find one: American College of Veterinary Surgeons Or call your vet tomorrow for a referral!! |
They said it will take a few hours and I could come get him after they were done. I told them I want to stay here with him. They are very understanding. I am waiting in the lobby until they are ready for him they have a few emergencies they need to see to first. Then, when they are done wrapping him, they will bring him to me. I will be able to hold him as he comes out of his sedation. I feel much better about being here and holding him instead of making him wait and then wake up in the small cage. He is do attached to me (and me to him), I know he will be happier with me holding him. I could hear him crying and whining when they took him for the x ray. So glad I have my iPhone with me. Gives me something to do while we wait. They said it will prob take several hours. Thanks for letting me share. It feels better talking about it with people who know and understand the love we have for these little sweeties. |
I am so sorry to hear this news. You are a great mom for getting him the medical attention he needs. Peyton is going to heal from this. I know how much you love your baby, and accidents happen even when we are trying to be careful. My prayers are with both of you, and I am hoping for a full recovery very soon. |
Before you decide on this course of treatment that this vet has suggested, please read the following. Growth plate fractures Tibia Growth Plate Fractures |
I am having it wrapped for today. I am going to call the Purdue University vet hospital tomorrow. I'm sure I can take him in to see them, if I do need a referral my vet will give me one. If I had known it was fractured, I would have taken him there today. I was hoping it would just be bruised and that they x rays would show that. Sadly, that is not the case. Purdue has a great vet hospital. That is where I took the first Peyton. :( They have the best there all in one place. Although it was an awful diagnosis with the first Peyton, I was grateful to be there. I feel just awful. The pain he is having, and will have and the expense this is causing. My husband is awesome and loves our pets too, he never makes me feel bad about the expense. But, it still makes me feel bad. Ugh...just bad all around. I really feel horrible. :( |

Thank you for the links. I am going to read them right now. I'm still getting him wrapped today. Or maybe I should just go ahead and take him to Purdue right now? It is about 1 1/2 hours away, so not that far. |
Sorry to hear this news. Peyton is so lucky to have a loving mommy like you to care for him and do what is best. Sending prayers for Peyton's successful outcome and speedy recovery. |
Make sure to get the xrays so that they don't have to be repeated! I am so sorry you are going through this. It is so stressful to have a sick or injured pup. |

Just read the articles and talked to husband. I am going to take him to Purdue right away. I am waiting to talk to the vet and will ask for x rays. I hope they can give them to me. I will maybe have to leave him there. I hope not. That will nearly kill me. :( So sad. |

Of course they will give you the xrays! |
I'm so sorry.:( I was hoping it was just a bruise as well. Linda has the best advice and you will make the right decision for little Peyton. Please know that I'm thinking of you both. |
Okay, just talked to vet. She is in full support of me going to Purdue. She actually went there herself. She is writing up the referral and getting the files and x rays on a disk. She said she thinks it is either Mon or Tues that they do the ortho surgeries. So, I'm getting the referral and will call Purdue in the morning. She is giving me some medicine to keep him comfy for tonight. I'll just have to make sure he takes it easy. I will prob have to leave him overnight when he has the surgery though. Ladyjane, thanks for the support and advice. It helps when making these kind of decisions. I truly love Peyton so much. I want to do what is best for him. I'm just so sorry he is even in this situation. I will make sure he gets the very best care. He is worth it and so much more. |
I'm so sorry for the diagnosis but it sounds like the good vets at the school will give excellent care. I am so sorry this happened to you and your baby. My prayers go out to you and your little one and I hope that the surgery or conservative treatment goes beautifully. |
I will keep you and Peyton in my prayers. You are doing the very best for your little one by taking him to a specialist. He will be in good hands and will be like new before long. You are a good mama!:) |
Indeed, you are a good mama! I will keep you and Peyton in my thoughts and prayers. I know they will take good care of this at Purdue! |

Isn't it fabulous to have a vet school close? I'm only about an hour from NC State. I'll keep little Peyton in my thoughts. |
I am so sorry Bitsy about Peyton's leg. You are a very good mommy for getting him in for xrays today. Glad you have an excellent ortho specialist nearby. Keeping your little guy in my thoughts and prayers. |
