Bailey got Distemper today and he's acting very sleepy and almost like he's wobbly on his feet. The only other thing he got was a heartworm test and his nails trimmed. It is very stressful for him to go to the vet, he pees on everyone that touch him. He was shaking a little bit here and there but that has seemed to cease... Now he's just very tired and feels warm (maybe from sleeping in blanket). How long do the side effects last? Should I be worried? I'm an over reactive mom because he has IBD and Chronic Pancreatitis.

if he got the vaccination you can expect this:

Possible Side Effects to the Canine Distemper Vaccine

Lethargy - After receiving its vaccination, a dog may want to just lie around and sleep, avoiding its typical activities.
Slight fever - Some dogs react to vaccinations with a slightly elevated temperature.
Swelling at the injection site - Dogs occasionally get a lump at the injection site that absorbs into their system within a day or two.
Loss of appetite - Loss of appetite is another minor side effect to the distemper vaccine.

While the majority of reactions to the distemper vaccine are minor, should the dog react with swelling of the face, diarrhea or vomiting, or become unresponsive, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Lethargy is normal for a day or two. If they are so lethargic that they are wobbly or wobbly after a vaccine and not lethargic, the vet should know about it. Even if it goes away by morning, it would be something they should know for next time. Is his liver okay?

Check gums often. Watch for swelling anywhere andn make sure he isn't breathing heavily.

Ok, sorry so late... I slipped on ice this morning and fractured my elbow... UGH! I just thank god that I didn't fall on the side that I was carrying him! Bailey got the vaccination, he does not have distemper. I will definitely call vet right now to tell dr. that he was wobbly after shot.

This morning he is playing ball and seems back to normal!

OMG! So sorry you fell... hope you recover quickly!

As for Bailey, is he 6 years old? With that kind of reaction, I would be discussing the need for anymore vaccines for him, ever! Maybe do titers to check his immunity levels....

Yes he's 6yo. That's what I'm worried about (other vaccines). What is titers???

Titers are blood test that show the immunity to certain illness (did I get that right????). That is what I do with my Lasa.. some vets don't like "over medicating" I think it is an excellent idea

I am glad he is better.. and I am sorry about your fall. That must of been a hard fall

If your vet says they can't, ask him to draw the blood and send it off to Hemopet.... there are detailed instructions and the necessary forms on their website.
