Tell it to someone else. She has been mismanaged IMHO. I am on the same LS group as her owner and know how long this has gone on. This thread is not about that...BUT it is an educational one and I would not want others to think that not doing surgery and doing online amateur "research" for a LS is acceptable. I cannot help but wonder if she has ever seen a specialist. I will never know. I am now no longer going to respond to either of you....this is just not productive.

| To the OP and anyone interested, I am posting this yet again: All About Shih Tzu It is well written in lay terms and worth the read. Please note that the longer the shunt is left untreated (during which time the liver is NOT functioning properly) the blood has crystalline compounds that build up and kidney stones develop. It is important for people to understand that online research never takes the place of good veterinary care.

| She has followed her vets instructions to the T so are you saying her vet doesn't have a clue ??? Dogs who don't feel well do NOT act like Tinkerbell does or have the appetite that she does either. The only people dictating here are the 2 of you. She has seen one specialist & consulted with another. Are you accusing her of Lying ??? Because that's what it appears to me. |

The facts are: Tink's first BAT results were 126 post, which is not all that high, and is why my vet opted to treat with diet and meds.... I did post on here too so it's not like I'm trying to hide anything... I do agree Tink could have been medically managed better in hindsight... but the best thing that will come of this is that hopefully my vet has learned from this and will be able to help others' pups in the future.

| Unless your dog has MVD why has this dog not has surgery??? LS dogs NEED surgery they will not get better with out surgery. I'm so confused as to why this has been "managed" for 2 years and no surgery?

| That I'm not qualified to answer (as far as going undected for so long) - probably someone else on here is more qualified. I'd say there were "signs" maybe a couple months before the shunt was discovered when she was 3 - but when starting out, they seemed minor, once in a while some vomiting, once in a while a bit lethargic and I could not (no matter how many times I took her outside all hours of the night) get her potty trained - that seemed to be the most noticeable problem and drinking more water than usual. When there were too many things not adding up, is when we got busy trying to figure out what was wrong - I had never heard of a liver shunt in Yorkies and we had two previous long-lived Yorkies with not an ounce of a health problem. But, we did not buy from a reputable dealer and that was a big lesson I learned! Once she was diagnosed I came onto YT to learn about shunts - just wish I had checked with this forum BEFORE I bought her. |
