Help sprained/broken paw during BLIZZARD!
 

This had to be the absolute worst day for Layla to get hurt. Its snowing SO hard right now that my county is in a state of panic because of this severe blizzard we're having today. :( I asked my cousin to hold my Layla while I went downstairs to prepare her meal. So I'm downstairs when I hear a loud THUD! followed by Layla screaming.... so I rushed upstairs and she couldn't walk. Pretty much she tried jumping out of his hand and he caught her at knee level, but she rolled off his hands and hit the floor. I guess she landed on her paw :(

At first I couldn't even touch it. An hour later she was limping on it and not screaming. I put her to bed in her crate and go to warm up her snuggle puppy. Since her bed doesn't take up all of the crate, I stick the snuggle puppy in the hole and she sticks her head out and lays it on the snugglepuppy. So I'm heating it up when I hear her screaming again. I ran back and I guess she kind of fell into the hole that the snuggle pup takes up and hurt her paw again.

Ugh! :'( I was crying. At this point I don't know if its broken or sprained and I can't even take her to the vet because this damn blizzard is so severe! Rumor is it will continue until five pm tomorrow! I don't know what to do! :confused:

Isn't it the truth, whether it's whelping or injuries, they sometimes have the worst sense of timing. I know it seems impossible but you've got to calm down. if you're freaking out it'll stress her out even more. You did the exact right thing by crating her. Keep her off it as much as possible, Call your vet and see if he has an after hours number that you can at least get some phone advice. Obviously with the weather you're not going anywhere right now.

I agree with the above suggestion, keep her crated to limit movement. When the snow clears you may want to try this 24 hr emergency vet if you are in this area.

Sprains and strains - do you have a cold pack? If not wrap ice cubes in plastic bag around towel - place on paw for 5 minutes remove, let temp of skin come back up to normal and reapply, repeat 3x in one hour. Wait two hours - repeat again.

Do you have vet bandage? If so wrap leg in vet bandage (not too tightly) just like you would for yourself if you sprained your leg.

Thank you guys :( I let her out to pee/poop at 8am and she screamed when she put pressure on it. Then she started limping....so I don't think its gotten better.

Do you guys think its broken or sprained based on this? She can put a little pressure on it but only a little. I figure only an xray will tell. :/

I'm going to do the bandage/ice thing....thanks so much for that. I'm just terrified of whats to come and I feel so anxious because all I can do is wait. She's only 3 months old right now. Arg :(

She needs to be seen by a vet. Breaks start healing and you don't want it to heal incorrectly. I'd call and see if the er vet is open. Ours is staffed 24 hours regardless of the weather.

It does sound like it might be broken. Don't let her put any weight on it until you find out because if it is broken it could cause additional damage.
Hope you can get her seen by a vet today.

Jersey broke his leg when he was 9 mos old he could not put any pressure on it at all. I would definitely get it checked as soon as you can

I am pretty sure its the "wrist" of her paw that has the injury. I can touch it fine all the way until I touch her paw. I am waiting until 9-930 am (its 8:53am) to call her vet (banfield) to see if it will be open. I hope so. Goodness :(

What did the vet say when you called?

I would try to get into the emergency vet if possible- like someone else said, if it is broken you don't want to give it a chance to start healing wrong.

How is she? Did you find a Vet?

Shes just sleeping really. I fed her and she ate but she doesn't want to pee or poop because she cant position herself to do so. I could tell she was trying. I found a vet in Paramus, but, I can't get there because none of the roads in the city are plowed. The police department sent out a universal message to everyone in town that said not to leave your house until at least five o'clock PM and that even then it may be a problem.

Would it be ok to take her to the vet tomorrow morning?

Just now reading this post, and hoping you found a vet that was open. Prayers to your baby for speedy healing.

I'm close but not so close. About 15-20 mins...I can't go because the car won't go passed the driveway. I called and explained this to them and they said there's nothing to be done until we bring her in. And since we can't...I figure we may as well wait until 9 am tomorrow to her regular vet. It will be safer.

I was hoping they could give you some instruction for today. I know it's dangerous out there and you need to be safe. Wishing Layla a speedy recovery.:)

Yeah we asked if it was ok to ice or bandage it and they were like no you need to bring her in to get examined. :/

Thanks soooo much for being so sweet and worried and helpful. It means a lot to me. My boyfriend was reading this thread he was like "wow! they really care about you and layla!" and I was like "I know, and they don't even know me because I'm a brand new member."

O we do all care about the babies. I know from my own experience with Jersey's broken leg how helpful and caring the members on YT are. They really got me through Jersey's ordeal.

I noted that you use Banfield. I don't know what they do about fractures; but I would suggest that if there is a fracture you go to a board certified vet. You can find one in your area by searching on the following site:

Poor thing. They do seem to have the worst timing for injuries, don't they? Since you can't get out of your drive way, the important thing here is to keep her off of it completely until you can get her seen. If it means swaddling her and holding her, then so be it. Keep an eye out for any temperature changes in the paw, that could be a sign of circulation disturbances which is a huge emergency.

Instead of calling Banfield, I would try to locate an emergency vet in your area and call them for further instructions. They will be your best bet for getting instructions on stabilizing her until she can be seen.

Banfield isn't answering at all, its closed, I'm sure. I called the emergency place and they didn't give any advice other than to bring her to them. I asked if there was anything I should do and they said no. :/

The orthopedic surgeon we used in Faifield is Dr Hunt and he is on acvs list and yes hopefully it is a sprain:)

I think I would find a way to get there! I know how bad it is as I used to live in NJ and went through a couple of blizzards. As soon as you can, I would get her to the EC! I am sure that they will get the roads cleared as quickly as possible.

I agree. Sorry to say, but Banfield isn't the greatest in general, and they certainly aren't great when it comes to specialties. If she isn't able to put pressure on her paw and she yelps, I would bet she broke it...I know you are snowed in (me too, I am on Long Island, just came in from digging out my car), but it's still early, I would really try to get her into a Vet that is open today though...Good Luck!

I live in New York and we got the blizzard also. I'm praying nothing goes wrong with any of my fur babies today because that's how it always happens. I doubt if you can get out today as can I but the best you can do is keep her off her feet as much as possible. I know how it is when you feel helpless because one of my cats died during a blizzard and I wasn't able to get him to the vet to save him. Maybe you'll be able to get her to a vet later when things get a little better.

My mother is friends with a vet but we haven't talked to him in a long while. Well I called my friend who worked with him at the clinic and she gave me his number. The office was closed [surprise] but I left a message and -exuse my language- but holy s**t he called me back within 10 minutes! He's coming over in 20 minutes! I cried and cried and thanked him and called him my angel lols! I am soooooo happy I can't even describe it.
