| Info on Luxation Patella needed Hi, My yorkie has luxation patella in both knees and is scheduled to have surgery late December. I am so nervous about this surgery. Does anyone have any experience with having both knees done at the same time. I guess my biggest concern at this time is will she be able to stand for potty breaks or will she be able to walk at all in the begining? How can I help her that first week? I appreciate any info you can give me and Tara Bella. Thanks. |

| If you do a search on YT for LP or luxating patella posts you will find LOTS of information.

| Luxating Petalla Surgery for Tara Thanks for the info Dianne. I've spent hours here and feel fairly informed on what Tara is going to go thru. She is going to have her surgery on the 28th of Dec. Hopefully everything will go well. |

| Good luck with the surgery! My Daisy had LP surgery in 2002 at the age of two. She recovered well and is now ten and has never had another problem.

| Hi, My little chihuahua, Bitsy, had both her knees done 2 years ago. I was terrified too but I went to an osteopath specialist and he assured me that he could do it. Bitsy is barely 3 lbs and has very tiny bone structure, think skinny little chi!! She came through with flying colors. They had to keep her overnight on a morphine drip and I usually don't like leaving my babies at the vet but they had ER care for her all night. The next day they weaned her off the drip and she looked way better than I expected. The surprise was that they didn't put any bandages or dressings on the wounds. There were external stitches that were to be removed in 1 week and I had made her a tiny little cervical like collar so she couldn't lick at it. She came home with her pain meds and an antibiotic just in case I guess. I kept her in a small kennel on my bed up near my head to sleep, so that I could hear her but so my other dogs wouldn't lick her or lay on her and so she still could be in bed with me. You have to keep them off their feet and confined as much as possible. My doc said for atleast 6 weeks, so I had a baby bassinet that I would roll around the house with her in it. She could stand to pee right away. She healed quicker than I thought and it actually was hard to keep her from wanting to walk and run. I know I have some photos of her at that time, so you can see the incision. I will look for them. Let me know if there is anything else you'd like to know! I wish you the best of luck!!

| Thanks for the encouraging words. Tara had her surgery yesterday and I just got home with her today. Right now she is sleeping. I have her in a ex pen which is going to be her home for the next couple of weeks. Six to eight from what the vet told me. She can walk a little bit. The Vet did put bandages on her legs. I read about some vet using them and other not. The place I took her is an accredited american aminal hospital association member and her vet is certified (ACVS). I nervous about taking her out for bathroom breaks (have to keep the bandages dry). I going to see if she will use the potty pads inside. I have the next few days home with her which I so glad I do. Hopefully the next couple of weeks will go fast. I'll keep updates on her progress. Thanks for caring! |

| Hello Buster had one leg done in October and we are now just through with the rest and recuperation period. It was hard not letting him out to play but they said the most important thing was to keep them quiet and let things heal correctly. He was able to put weight on the bad leg on the second day.Good luck with the rehab it goes by quickly just maybe not fast enough for the patients! |

OP- I forgot to mention that we took our pups for some physical therapy a few months after the surgery. Iris had some muscle atrophy from being in the bandages for a week and then the limited movement. The swim therapy really seemed to help her. You might want to ask your surgeon about that if they don't bring it up as part of the recovery plan. Here is another picture of Iris at her first swim session. | |

| I hope she feels better soon! Gilmore is on his 5th week of recovery but he only had one knee done. At least you will only go through the recovery period once. We have to do 12 weeks of crate rest. You will be surprised with how fast they come back to themselves and then the hardest part is the confinement. I was a nervous wreck at first with the potty breaks as well. |

| I think that I had a worse night than Tara. I had to put the e-collar on her and she didn't like that. After a while she settled down, but I was up with every little noise that she made. Potty breaks are the bad as I have to put plastic bags than socks over her bandages so they don't get wet. And she just shakes. At least the snow is melting with the warmer weather, but rain is coming. Oh the Joy! Still working on getting her to go on potty pads. Still waiting for her first bowel movement, but from what I've read here it might be three days. I think I'll feel better after that. She sleeps a lot for which I'm thankful for. I know that each day she will get better and stronger. I'll try to post some pictures. Having problems with the size. Thanks everyone for all the info. I appreciate it. |

| I'm glad Tara got through the night OK. I think that it is harder on us than them, because we worry so much and hate to see them in pain or hurt. It will get better every day but the hard part of keeping her from not running or walking will be coming. How long do they leave the bandages on? My surgeon doesn't use bandages because he thinks that they can cause more problems, like infection from wetness and atrophy. Hope everything gets better every day.
