| ![]() It's been a while since I've had a dog spayed or nuetered. I picked up Scarlett from the vet yesterday and we were given pain meds but I think due to a lack of sleep I wasn't thinking clearly and forgot all about antibiotics. Don't they give those after spaying? I will be calling the vet when they open. Scarlett is doing ok. She makes this pathetic sounding little grunt or squeek. Otherwise she is doing good. |

| ![]() I think some vets do. I've never used them, nor needed them. I think it's better not to overuse antibiotics myself. Sometimes the results of overuse of antibiotics is not pleasant. I forgot to tell you I'm glad Miss Scarlett is doing ok. She'll be better tomorrow.

| ![]() I talked with our vet a few days ago about spaying Lulu. It's not their standard procedure to give antibiotics after a spay. They do give pain meds. I agree with the previous poster...I wouldn't over use antibiotics.

| ![]() Same here. We were only given pain meds after spay. I would think you would only need antibiotics if there was a problem ie.) infection |

| ![]() Thanks for the info. I will just stick with the pain meds then. I can't believe how well she is doing today already. |

| ![]() We recently had Gracie spayed and she was not given pain meds or antibiotics. Her incision was hardly even noticeable and was on her tummy where she couldn't reach it. She didn't appear to be in any pain and had no complications from her surgery. This may depend on how each vet performs the surgery.

| ![]() Not usually needed. Pain meds always needed for spays even if it doesn't look like it.

| ![]() Hmm, that's weird, my vet gave Uni a pain shot after surgery and sent me home iwth clavamox, I thought that was an antibiotic? she was prescribed 0.6ml 2x per day. (I think it was 0.6 I don't have the bottle in front of me.) She doesn't seem to be in any pain.

Some vets have the philosophy that some pain is good to slow them down. That's really only something you and the vet can decide. However, I don't think a pup being in pain is beneficial. They hide pain well. It's major abdominal surgery with organ removal. It hurts whether they show it or not...

| ![]() I'm thinking perhaps they prescribed the clavamox bc in addition to the spay she also had the growth removal and tooth extraction? I don't think she's in pain anymore. She did yelp once though. I was in the bathroom and she wanted up in the laundry basket so I put her up. Then 5 secs later she wanted down and before I could grab her she jumped down on her own. She yelped but after some hugs she was wagging her tail again. I think she is fine now bc she is starting to hump her bed again. I try to stop her, but she looks at me like I'm crazy.

| ![]() I had my 7-1/2 mo Yorkie, Belle, spayed today. They did her surgery around 9:00am and I picked her up at 4:00pm. She has been given 2 prescriptions - 1/8 tab of Tramadol (50 mg) for pain every 8 - 12 hrs .. and 1 Amoxicillin (50 mg) twice a day for one week. She weighs around 5 pounds. She's still groggy and whining a little when she moves. She pretty much just wants me to hold her. I can't imagine if she was in a cage all alone at the vet tonight - I don't think I could've handled it. I trust my vet as far as the meds are concerned. I was told her surgery went well. Just glad to have my baby back home. I've been a basket case and I'm SO glad the actual surgery is behind us. The printout of instructions say no bath or extraneous exercise for two weeks. Stitches out in 8 to 10 days. |
