i love the idea of it, unfortunately i avoid chicken diets because of Sadie's itchies from them. she's weird and someday when money isn't tight i'm going to allergy test her to make sure what the heck she's actually allergic to, but something in the primal or NV raw chicken formulas give her the itchies so i kinda avoid chicken. the catch, she's never had the same reaction to home boiled chicken so i don't really know for sure what it is that causes it. both time i've tried a chicken diet from a company she's broken out in the itchies...???? she's a freak what can i say.

i've got some amazing news!!! i just called the vet center of Liberty where i actually live as oppossed to the place i work and they can send out a fecal to Columibia, MO (vet school) amazing!! for a whopping total of $89.00 as opposed to a fecal profile here with the empl. discount of 135.00....glad i called. prob. take them there from now on and will send that next week to rule out everything!

Sadie ate all her food tonight and didn't have any vomitting or diarrhea in the kennel when i got home at 6pm. i fed her and gave meds. then kenneled while i went to visit granny. got home she was fine. she pooped runny but with more stool than water for once...she threw up a tiny bit of digested food after i gave her a bath (butt was stinky) she's sleeping now and doing good. THANK God! and granny is ok, has surgery tomorrow on her eye bones.

And my two cents:

Pro-pectallin is a prescription probiotic... it is known per my vet for stopping diarrhea. It may take a few days to a week for it to work..

Pumpkin can be given for diarrhea and constipation... it works both ways. I have never had it cause diarrhea.

Giardia will shed every 3-4 days. To get a good sample and only pay once for testing, you will need to collect 3 stool samples on 3 consecutive days, mix them together and submit as one sample. You could even mix all 6 samples together, if one has it they both need treated anyway.

Sadie may not be allergic to chicken, but to the chemicals used to preserve it in dog food. Which may be her problem with the fish inclusive diets to... as all fish caught for the pet trade is treated with ethyoxiquin (sp) on the ship while at sea, by law, which is supposedly burned off in the manufacturing process but not tested for afterwards so trace amounts could be in any kibble that contains fish unless stated otherwise.

The bland diet is chicken (no fat, skin or bones) and plain white rice. Brown rice is more nutritious... for people... but dogs have a problem digesting it which defeats the 'bland' part of the diet. (per my vet)

I was told at some point in my life, that pink meat near the bone in poultry does not mean it's raw or undercooked, but that it is from a young bird. I've never gotten sick from eating it and the meat thermometer always registers above 170 deg F.

I have been through this with my own dogs, the on and off diarrhea, the AB's every other month.... Finally a different vet said to try them on a low dose sulfazalazine (I need to verify that but it is a sulfa drug) for 1 month, pro-pectalin for 1 month, and bland diet for 2 weeks. It did clear up, but came back when I stopped the probiotics, so I've been using Dogzymes from Nature's Farmacy since then with great results. They also had negative fecals all the time.

The probiotics work to override any bad bacteria they may pick up and preventing it from taking up residence in their systems. Mine have maybe had diarrhea twice this year and it only ever lasted one day. Which I can live with. :D

That is such a great idea! I wish I would have thought about mixing samples earlier this year when all three of mine had giarida that Tia just had to share. When one sample came back clear, I knew they still had it. And...yes, the next sample showed up positive for giardia. Great idea!

Don't waste your money doing allergy testing for food - the results are unrealiable...I learned this the hard way after spending $800 on testing for Daisy years ago. Testing for environmental allergies is reliable on the other hand.

I do not use probiotics on a regular basis even on my dog with IBD. We use it only when there is an accute bout of diarrhea with a known cause - i.e. a dietary indiscretion. Natural remedies should only be used when things like e coli and salmonella and the whole host of other bugs have been ruled out. There is no probiotic in the world that will kill off a gram negative bacteria like salmonella.

Your vet is WRONG about brown rice. It is better for dogs and better for us, and the vet nutritionist that I use who has a PhD, DVM, and a board certification in veterinary nutrition recommends it. Brown rice is NOT hard to digest -- mine have been eating it since 8 weeks of age. The only think my dogs have ever had a problem digesting = DOG FOOD.

I'd never eat pink poultry - and I buy farm fresh young chicken all the time and it is never pink. I would not recommend eating it.

still doing well. no more vomitting. i did notice a little watery spit up or something on the floor but it also could have been an ice cube melted since they had one to play with. she's feeling great and eating well. she even had an extra meal last night because she was so darn hungry. i'm waiting to see a stool and make sure they are firming up. last few have been a bit firmer but still soft and i'm just waiting to catch her in the act again. thanks for all the suggestions and prayers, i think we might finally beat this and move on.
