Carson has Necrotizing Encephalitis - Help! He had a MRI today and the Neurologist called to say she believes he has Necrotizing Encephalitis - it will be confirmed once the report is back from the lab. However, she had looked at the MRI data. Does anyone have advise they could share, it seems like its going to be a long road of harsh medications. And he may only live weeks or months, there is a chance he can live a long normal live (I'm praying for that option). Thank you! |
I'm praying for that option too. Hopefully, someone will come along that knows more than me! |

We actually have the report from DR Allen Sisson, so that is good news. Our breeder gave it to us when we didn't know what could be the problem. I going to make a copy for the Neurologist the next time I see her. |
I am so sorry about Carson's diagnosis. North Carolina State Vet School has been doing quite a it of research on encephalitis. There is lot of information on their website: Veterinary Teaching Hospital :: North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine |
Prayers for Carson to be the lucky one & beat the odds! :hands: |

Also.. join the YahooGroup NewGMEDogs : NewGMEDogs They can give your more info on treatment, and how to contact Dr Sisson. Don't lose hope. Keeping you and Carson in my prayers... If you need any help, let me know. Hugs.... Please get him on the right meds asap.... |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you, we'll make a copy for her to contact him. She said that from what she saw on the MRI (how bad it was) she was surprised Carson wasn't worse off physically. I'm out for the day - we are getting my mom's house ready to be put up for sale on Tuesday. My neighbour is babysitting Carson and Chloe, so he will be watched carefully. Thank you for keeping him in your prayers. Attachment 325783 |
Carson is in my prayers. |
Carson is such an adorable little boy. You and Carson are in my prayers. I am so sorry that he is ill. |
I am sorry to hear this but want you to know there is hope with treatment! I see that others have given you links where you can find more information. Just wanted to share one of YHR's fosters with you. Little Roriee came to us in terrible shape from GME and is a little miracle now after having undergone chemotherapy. You can see her story at: Adoptable Pups We also have a thread about her on YT at: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-updates.html So, there are successful stories out there! Keep positive thoughts! You and Carson will be in my thoughts and prayers. |

Keeping positive thoughts and prayers for you and Carson. He is so adorable!!! |
Ladyjane - thank you for posting the link for Roriee, what an amazing story. And you are an amazing person for not giving up on this adorable little girl. I am hopeful for Carson, I just wish we were 5-7 days from now - so he could start to feel better from the Prednisone. Tuesday he will get the blood tider (not sure if that is how you spell it) done, and then we can start on the Lomustine. I believe this is what the Neurologist is suggesting, I do know she mentioned something that would happen every 4 weeks - so I guess that was it. I'm also going to check on the diet they mention in Dr Sisson's report - RD, however, I will probably figure out how to do it in a homecooked way. Thanks again! |
I am so sorry you and Carson have this diagnosis, it must be very scary for you. My prayers will be with you both as he goes through treatments. Roiree can be Carson's inspiration.....this will get better! |

Jacalyn, you are also being a wonderful mother to Carson. I am sure you will continue to love, take care of, nurture him, and give Carson the care he needs. A homecooked diet by Dr. Remillard sounds like a wonderful idea. I will be thinking of you often and praying that he will get better soon. I've read every thread about Roriee, and she has given me such hope. It doesn't sound like you would, but don't ever give up hope. If you ever start to feel down, read Roriee's story. I do, and it helps me a lot. |
Thanks Cathy, how do I get in touch with Dr. Remillard? Do you remember the cost to have him/her create a diet? We are going to double the Prednisone dose for four days starting tomorrow, so we can follow the suggestion from Dr. Sisson. He seems a bit more allert tonight, but his legs are still all over the place. |

Lisaly - Thanks for the sweet comments. I consider it my job as Daisy's guardian to be tireless and unrelenting in pursing any and all options for her that will improve her quality of life. Daisy steals the heart of all who meet her and she is truly a miracle dog. If she dies tomorrow, there will never be a day that I regret anything because I have done what many would not for a dog with the odds stacked against her. I am a better person because of Daisy. |

I'm glad to hear that Carson is a bit more alert. I'm glad your neurologist is following the Dr. Sisson protocol. Regarding Dr. Remillard - she is at the MSPCA Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston. Yes, I do know the current fees to consult and do a diet. As that information may change, I will PM this to you so that future readers of this thread, if any, are not confused by the pricing should it change (and like everything else in life, I'm sure it will). As LadyJane said - where there is love there is hope and you have many of us here that will be on this journey with you. Kiss Carson on his little head for me. Cathy |
Hi everyone, Carson is starting his 48 hour injection treatment tomorrow morning - I am hoping they will allow me to finish up the three additional injections so we don't have to drive back and forth three more times in 48 hours, as well the stress it puts Carson under. We did the four days of 10mg Prednisone, but now he is back on 5mg since Friday - doesn't seem to be as stable on his feet with the 5mg. I guess we will know more after the injections. I am also going to see about getting him on a proper diet from Dr. Sisson's clinic. Have a great day, I just wanted to see everyone an update. Jacalyn, Carson & Chloe (who we have since got pet insurance for). |
Best wishes for Carson! Will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. He is so lucky to have you! :) |
I'm so glad that you will be contacting Dr. Remillard at Angell. She is very experienced with sick dogs and as I mentioned works right on site with Dr. Sisson. She will know exactly what is best for Carson! He is in our prayers. |
Keeping you and Carson in our thoughts and prayers.... and Chloe too. :D |
Carson is a lucky dog to have someone willing to take such good care of him. I hope you get some good news today. |
Keeping Carson in our prayers... |
We will be keeping Carson in our prayers! |
I am so sorry and I will be keeping Carson in my prayers, and you too! Stay strong for your little boy, he will feed off your strength and positivity! You are a wonderful mom! |
So far three treatments, I was able to give all of the injections myself. No side effects yet, no big improvement though... I guess it takes time. Last one is tonight and then we have to do a white blood cell count in seven days. He's gained half a pound (Prednisone), so we have to cut back dinner a bit - I'm sure the extra weight isn't going to help him being stable. Daddy is home with him today, I took the day off yesterday. So all is good for now. Thank you for your prayers! Jacalyn |
