new puppy has ringworm

okay so here is the story...when i got my new puppy the breeder(who was a very nice lady, by the way) told me he was getting over ringworm around his eye...and the hair is growing back...said he got it from a lady who had come to see the puppies and she had it and gave it to my pup. so now i noticed it behind his ear and neck...and she said to use athletes foot cream...because thats what her vet told her...and to dip him...she had been treating him for 3 weeks already...i called my vet and he said its contagious...but is that only for dogs or us also. I know that lady gave it to him but can he infect my other dogs and my family as well? what do you recommend i tell the breeder? will this go away?

It is contagious.

Hope this helps.

wow

so what should i say to the lady that sold him to me?...but she told me it was all gone already...and these 2 other spots just popped up on him last night...how is that if none of my dogs or family members have ringworm?

Ring worm is tough to contain, especially if you are only "spot treating". The fungus spreads across the skin, looking for a susceptible area to take hold in. It's important to get to the vets and get on a good treatment, and to finish off all the meds. If you stop just because the rash "disappears" you may end up with a recurrence.

"Nice" isn't a word I would use to describe someone who knowingly sold you an infected dog, JMO.

very true

she seemed like an ok lady...and when she said ringworm...it was like a red flag i should have listened to....but he was so darn cute...so i guess i can't really confront her about this?, cause it was also my fault for being ignorant...when she said it was clearing up and infection was gone...i thought "ok i can handle that"

I adopted Tia at 10 weeks this Easter and she had giardia, coccidia, and ringworm. I can't tell you how contagious it is. I have two other dogs and they got everything. My husband, myself, my elderly cancer neighbor, and her liver-ill yorkie got it also. I had to be treated with medication, along with the lamisil. My dogs were just cleared of ringworm about 3-4 weeks ago and I'm still watching to make sure it doesn't come back. My neighbor's house still has it....and it's been since Easter! The dogs were on medication. Tia was only 8 oz and Ally just over 3 lbs so I had to go to a specialty pharmacy to get it. The vet told me that you just can't treat it externally because it's an internal thing for them. I did put lamisil on them but I think they licked a little of it and got sick, so be careful. My rountine for ringworm since Easter was medication twice daily (with food), wash everything every other day. My floors were mopped with bleach because it kills the spores. I limited the toys/beds/pillows they had because they had to be washed also. Kennels were bleached for 10 minutes every other day also. The dogs/pup had baths with the medicated shampoo (10 minutes before rinsing) every other day. The were restricted to certain areas as not to spread the spores. The spores can live up to two years in your house and you could be carrying it throughout your house by walking from room to room. It is just aweful! I wish you luck because it's the hardest thing I've had to do. I hope your baby gets better fast! Maybe if you talk to the breeder, she may help you pay some of the vet bills.

ooh

i guess i'm just one of those gullible people you meet...i'm going to try and talk to her but even though she seemed nice...i bet its gonna get ugly! Any advice on how i can start the conversation...or what i can say...cause i did know about the ring worm but she said the infection was gone and that his hair was already growing back...which it was. but now this?:(

The vet and dog dermatologist both told me that they have to have two negative cultures (plucking of the hair) for them to be considered recovered. If the puppy had it one place, it most likely had it someplace else on it's body. Not all of the spots on my dogs/puppy were hairless in that circle pattern. They were little sores. If they scratch on place, they are spreading it with their paws. It is so contagious! I had to go thru my state to get my breeder to agree to help a little. They were very negative to me, but have agreed to pay a small portion of Tia's medical (not any of my other dogs). If you can pull up enough information on ringworm and talk kindly to her, that may help. You can tell her that she must not have been over the ringworm because the vet says she still has it. I'm sorry you have to go thru this, but clean everything that the puppy touches. I was even told not to touch them with bare skin. I wore gloves and long sleeves/pants for a long time...then just gave up because I couldn't bare it any longer. I used a baby blanket to pick up Tia and now, every time she sees me get it, she thinks she is going to be held and cuddled. Good luck and let me know how it goes or if I can be of any help or give any more suggestions or even just need an ear.

Give it a couple weeks, it has probably already infected your other pets, or will if you don't have the puppy quarantined.

I brought a kitten home from the shelter with it, although he had no apparent rash and all my pets, three other cats, nine dogs and my mother and myself all got it. Even my sister got it who came to visit and a friend of mine. You are in for a nightmare! Certainly a huge hassle and all your pets will need to be treated. You must keep your home vaccumed, and change your air filters several times. It truly sucks!

Good luck, I think you should call the breeder and she should reimburse you for some of the expense you WILL have. She should not have sold you the puppy until the ringworm was totally treated and gone. :thumbdown

I've spent over $2,000 on my three dogs since Tia came home. Vacuum, mop, wash, wash, wash. It is a nightmare! Yes, your other pets will get it if they were in contact. I even purchased a carpet/furniture shampooer to constantly clean everything. Although, we have been cleared, I am still cleaning...to make sure it is gone. I am still watching the dogs for any new signs. Tia has a spot on her head, and sadly I'm hoping it's a bug bite or irration from her bows (which she is fast to take out).

Oh yes, cleaned carpets and furniture, vaccumed daily (we do anyway), and I tried not to miss one spot. I also vaccumed my furniture daily. One of the cats got into my closet and I had to clean it and all the shoes in it. I used a ton, and I mean a ton of clorox and lysol wipes! I don't envy you.

You really should read the riot act to the breeder, she was incredibly irresponsible and down inconsiderate to let you take the puppy with ringworm.

update

okay so i just got back from the vet and he confirms that it is highly contagious and to keep him quarantined...hes also worried cause its right around his eye as well as other places...but his eye section is the concern..he told me that in "rare cases" it could infect the eye and go blind....i talked to the breeder that i got him from and she told me that her vet had said it was only able to pass on to other puppies and not older dogs and that once they have had it they would be immune to it...so i called my vet just now and told him what she told me and he pretty much said she was wrong...it can affect anyone and they can easily get it again....what should i do? we didnt sign a health guarantee or anything....can i still be covered in case something worse happens...i love my new baby and dont want him to be one of those "rare cases" as they put it. i would love him just the same...but she lied to me about it being gone and that it wasnt contageous. Anymore advice would be greatly appreciated.:animal-pa
