| Eye removed, causing clogged nostril ??? We received Ellie as a rescue through Chris's Rescue Angels. She had her left eye removed, as a result of a birth defect. According to my vet, they left the tear duct intact and now it drains into her nostril making it difficult for her to breathe through it. He said I need to keep the nostril cleared. I clean it daily with a damp cloth but that only gets the outside. It hurts me to hear her struggling to breathe through one side of her nose. Can anyone help?

| Would one of those baby thingies help - don't know what its called, but its sort of a syringe with a bulb on the end. Sorry can't remember what it is called but my baby is 36 now so it is many years since I used one.

| I've tried one, I actually got it from a pharmacy because it has a smaller tip. But the tears get crusty inside her nose and it won't suck them out. It seems to push it farther in! Now when I come near her with it, she runs!

| Oops! Just read the directions about the saline solution. That might help, but boy she is not going to like me!

Hmm if no-one else has any suggestions maybe your vet can suggest something. I just love it when vets (and people doctors) tell us to do something but don't tell us how we are supposed to do it!

| Actually it may bother you more than it does her. Did you ask the vet if it will harm her? Also...did you ask him about why they left that duct in and whether it should perhaps be removed??

| I'm sure it does bother me more than her! She's lived this way most of her life and is probably used to it. I did ask my vet but since he was not the one that did the surgery he really couldn't say. Maybe it was less invasive? But he did say that to subject her to another surgery would probably do more harm than a clogged nostril. He simply said "keep the nose clear". But, I found that if I spray her nose with a sterile saline solution, let it sit a bit then wipe, it helps a lot. I also put a little vaseline at the edge to soften. Seems to be working a lot better. Thanks for the input!
