Yorkie continuously pacing through house & acting lethargic!
 

Our Yorkie was very bloated last week. She finally 'relieved' herself over the period of 4-5 days and her belly went back to normal. Of course most of it was diarrhea, and she's just recently started vomiting clear fluid and partially digested food. Well last night, and all day she has constantly paced through the house. It's not a fast walk, its very slow. She walks up against all the walls and furniture. She runs into things frequently. I know she can't be blind, I can't describe how I know, but she's not. She's exhausted from walking all day long. It's driving us all crazy because we can't figure out what's wrong with her. The only time she'll sleep is when one of us holds her. She will not sit down, or lay down. She's been eating and drinking normally. She's also been trying to chew electrical cords, shoes, or anything that's very hard. She just chewed through my flip flops a few minutes ago, within a couple of seconds, they were destroyed. She won't chew bones or toys, or even play..

She has had all of her shots, and wasn't due back for another shot for a year. She had ear mites & fleas, and our vet treated her for that. But I've noticed, what looks to be ear mites, has come back. So I cleaned her ears out the other day. I don't know if that could've caused anything to happen, but I didn't stick a q-tip down into her ear. I know better. But, just enough to wipe around the areas that I could see. We also put some flea medicine on her back that was for 4-16 pound dogs. I don't know if some how either of those things could of affected her health. I also posted a few weeks ago about her eye bothering her, which I took her to the vet and we gave her the antibiotic in her eye that the vet gave to us. Her eye healed, but like I said.. I don't know if that could affect her either.

I honestly have no clue what could be wrong with her. She seems to be off-balance too when she DOES stand still. I know these sound like a lot of sympoms..but I don't know.. I'm taking her to the vet first thing in the morning..and I'm praying that she, and I both get some sleep. I feel terrible for her. I hope someone can help. :(

The flea medication could very well have affected her and caused an allergic reaction. If your vet rules that is not the problem and it persists, I suggest, if you haven't had bile acids done, request that they do them.

I looked at her skin, where we applied it, and it wasn't red or anything. Could it have affected her in a different way? Could she possibly be poisoned by it? I hope we can figure out what's wrong with her. It's so sad to watch her..she used to be so happy and hyper. Now she's the complete opposite..

What kind of flea med did you use? Do you remember the brand?

I'm glad that you are taking her in to see the vet in the morning. Maybe she has an ear infection causing her to be off balance? Please keep up updated.

Also, I just felt of her belly, it feels similar to holding a balloon. It's very tight and it feels hollow..

Oh gosh! Hartz products are terrible! You can do a search on it and find lots of info of what others have had happen using their products. I hope and pray your little one will be okay!

Has she walked into walls and bumped into things before this episode? If so, this is definitely something to talk to your vet about. Our breed is predisposed to certain illnesses that could cause this kind of "drunken" behavior. Or it could be an ear infection. I'm really glad you are taking her to the vet in the morning. Please let us know how it goes.

The back of the flea medicine box said to wash them immediately if they have an allergic reaction. We gave her a bath yesterday and dried her really good. I held her in a blanket to make sure she wasn't cold, and of course I know not to get her head wet. I'll never buy Hartz products again!

Last night, she went in our bathroom and went to sleep in there. She never sleeps in the bathroom! So then I woke up in the middle of the night and she had moved her bed beside of mine. She's been asleep on and off since last night. I guess she got so exhausted from walking all day long and the poor thing finally couldn't go any longer. I think the sleep helped her ALOT. My mom got up at 5 for work, and she said Trixie ate all of her dog food, and she went outside to potty! Which is good, we haven't seen her do #1 or #2 in a day or two. She was also constipated a few days ago, like I mentioned, I think that's why her belly was so bloated. She had an accident (diarrhea) a few minutes ago but I didn't scold her because she's sick and she can't help it. I honestly think that may have been it. Any time I've ever been constipated, it was miserable!

I called the vet around 9 this morning, and the girl working in the office said that the vet isn't in for a few days because she had her baby. I described to the girl what had been going on and she said she probably did have an allergic reaction to the flea medicine, and the constipation probably didn't make her feel any better either. I'm going to look around for other vets to take her to in case of an emergency. Since she seems to be feeling better, I'll just let her sleep for today.

Oh I forgot to add, she's never walked into things before. She wouldn't raise her head up to look at us yesterday, but she's doing it today. She's showing a lot of signs of feeling better. Lets hope she gets better!

Major update!

My Trixie started shaking today, so I knew she was in pain. I went to 3 vets and all of them were closed or out of town. I finally drove 15 minutes away and went to another vet. They did a x-ray on her and discovered that she has swallowed some metal, and she had to have immediate surgery to have it removed.

We took her to a Animal Hospital that's about an hour away, and they took her immediately. They were very nice and caring. They called us about 30 minutes ago and said she was out of surgery, and she had metal fragments, and hair and all kinds of junk in her belly. She must have gotten into some dirt when me and my mom were cleaning the house! How could we have been so careless and let her be sick for a week?! I feel horrible. I know I must be a bad mommy for not realizing it sooner. My mom being a nurse tried to diagnose her herself..but next time we'll always take her to the vet first. The vet that did her surgery said that her plasma is very low, so she has to have plasma transfusions tonight. She couldn't digest food, so she was basically starving to death. How could I not see it??? Her belly was huge but after being told that, I remember that I could feel ALL of her ribs and her back bone. I hope and pray that she comes back to us tomorrow. If I get the chance again, I'll be a better mommy to her than I was before. I'm heartbroken and I blame myself for this. Please pray for my baby.. I don't wanna lose her! She's my life :(

I'm so glad that you got her into surgery today......Will say prayers for your little girl as well as you. Don't beat yourself up....she's going to be fine.

I'm so glad you got her taken care of, this is an important reminder that we should all realize dogs don't "fake it", to get attention, and if they are not acting like themselves or not eating, the vet is the best place to go. The first year they seem to eat anything they can get ahold of so it's best to keep them confined, if you can't pick up everything. Hope she recovers quickly. Don't beat yourself up though, the advice you give someone else, might save a pups life.

I know, that's why I hope someone (like me) will read this and take their pet to the doctor instead of trying to play doctor themselves. I'll never try to diagnose my own dog ever again. She's a strong puppy and I know she'll be ok

Yeah, They'll eat anything on the floor, so it's important to keep things smaller than their mouth off the floor.

OMG! How scary! I am so glad you took her to the vet!

I'm glad you found a vet and hospital that could help you so fast. It sounds like your baby will heal and be back home to you soon. I will keep you both in my prayers.

Wow! That was horrible to have to go through. So glad she got help and was quickly diagnosed and treated. How is she doing today? Keeping her in my prayers....

She's doing alot better. There's 4 vets at that animal hospital and one stayed overnight with her last night while she was in intensive care. One is also staying with her tonight too. They said that they gave her some food earlier today and she ate all of it with no problems. She should be able to come home sometime tomorrow. I pray that she can, we all miss her so much.

I'm also uploading pictures of her in my albums. They were taken a few weeks ago. You all will have to go and look at her! Thank you so much for your prayers! I know Trixie would appreciate it =)

I'm so glad that you were able to find out what was going on and then able to give her the care that she needed. I will keep your little one in my prayers for a speedy recovery.

I am so glad you took her to get the help she needed. I hope is well enough to come home tomorrow too. I bet she is missing her family too. :)

All that counts is that Trixie is getting better and going to be in your arms once again. It's so easy to play the 'what if' mind game. You say you're a 'bad mommy' but I don't see it that way. She's going to be okay and someone, somewhere, will benefit from your experience. Hugs, Joanne

Thank you all for your prayers! Trixie is in my room, sleeping away in her bed right now :wub:. She got released from the hospital around 12:30 today. I couldn't believe that her surgery, medicines, her staying in the hospital, and all of her aftercare was 2,100 dollars! We only paid 300 for her, but you can't put a price on your baby! She truly is a miracle for making it through this! I have to feed her small amounts of perscription dog food throughout the day. She seems like she's starving all the time, but the vet told us not to overfeed her because it can stretch her belly. She's wanted us to hold her all evening and she usually doesn't seem so needy. I think it's her way of telling us that she missed us alot. I'm just so glad to have her home! I have pictures of her belly after her surgery posted. I'll upload more in a day or two. I'm exhausted and so is she. It's been long day!

I'm sure your vet told you to give several small meals throughout the day.
