That is so true! They may cost us a lot but they are worth every penny. They are priceless:) |
You may want to have her checked for diabetes. Sometimes it presents in some of the ways you described. You can never be too cautious. I hope she is ok! |

Update about Trixie.. She went back friday for a blood test to make sure all of her protein levels were doing good. Turns out that they were not. So yesterday we took her back for another blood test, and they did a urine test to see if she was 'getting rid' of good proteins that way. It turns out that she was. The vet says that this means that her liver isnt working. We have to take her to virginia tech on friday morning to do an ultrasound to see if it's the valve that carries toxins into the liver to filter them out of her body. More than likely, this is what's going on. The vet said they'll have to put a 'shunt' in the valve in her liver to open it up, to allow the proteins and other stuff to filter through. If we let this go without doing anything, her blood will poison her, resulting in seizures and brain damage..and then death. This was something she was born with. I'm kinda wondering if we got her from a bad breeder? But there's nothing we can do about that now. She's our baby and we're going to do everything we can to get her better! It's just sad that they'll have to open up her belly AGAIN. |
Are they saying she has a liver shunt? Or is this something entirely different? |
Yes, she has a liver shunt. I must've misnderstood. Our vet's accent is kind of hard to understand. |
misunderstood** I cannot type today! |
Lucy has liver issues that were diagnosed witha blood test. But she is not symptomatic so we treat her with a low protein diet and monitor her BAT's. One thing I remember my vet telling me was that ultrasounds aren't always reliable in diagnosing shunt . . so just be aware and ask lots of questions. I hope that you find out she doesn't have a shunt. Even if she does; however, she can still have a good life but I hope she doesn't need a 2nd surgery right away. Poor baby. |
I'm sorry to hear that Trixie may have liver shunt. She will be in my thoughts and prayers on Friday morning. Good luck. |
She had a blood & urine test done twice on monday. They said the ultrasound will determine if she has the shunt or not. Since her symptoms are pretty bad, she'll have to have surgery sometime next week. I'm just hoping this is something that can be fixed, and we wont have a problem with again. She's been fine today. She's been extremely hyper and playful (which is how we like her!) I just want her to be happy and healthy all the time! |
This is so sad. I'm glad you followed back up with your vet. I hope everything turns out well. Poor baby. |
Thank you everyone for your prayers & concerns! I have a good feeling that Trixie will be ok once she has surgery. I couldn't imagine life without her. She's in between my back and my pillows right now, barking in her sleep. It's so cute! |
Im so glad you took her in, I hope she is better soon |
Just feel the need to give you a heads up here. This link is to info on Liver Shunts from the University of Tennessee: Portosystemic Shunts FAQ You are not that far from U of Tenn... they are world leaders in LS diagnostics and surgical repair... and they are also the most affordable... Diagnostics tests, surgery, pre and post op care will all run under $2000.00 if done there. Also they have the highest success rate and have the most experienced vets (very important when looking at success rates) Please investigate further before committing to having anyone else do her surgery. Other vets have been known to charge anywhere from $3000.00 to $8000.00 for the same services provided at U of Tenn. Hope all works out well for you and your baby.. I'll keep you all in my prayers.... |
We took her for her liver surgery this morning. When she was put to sleep, and the vet put her on her back to cut her open, her heart stopped. He said he was able to revive her, but unable to do surgery. I could tell he was upset when he called to tell me this. She wasn't waking up from anesthesia, but thank God she finally did! He said to call him back later and he'll let us know if she's well enough to come home. If not, he said he'll personally stay with her overnight to keep an eye on her. He also said that he would suggest that we wait 3-4 weeks to try surgery again, or we can just let her go and live as long as she can. (Which could possibly be 2 years at the most). I don't know what we'll do as of right now. All that I know is that I can't wait to hold my baby again! The vet said he couldn't understand why this happened, because her blood levels and everything was absolutely NORMAL! and her proteins are usually very low. Please keep my baby in your prayers! I hope we can eventually do the surgery. I guess she just wasn't ready to yet.. |
Oh my...I am so sorry to hear this, but glad that she was able to pull through. I would take the advice of the poster and go to U of Tennessee. They are well known for their LS expertise. Prayers for you and your baby. |
Find out what gas he used to put her under... you need to know so it is never used again on her. You really should take her to a specialist if you can't go to U of Tenn... dogs with Liver problems are notoriously bad with anaesthesia and a specialist will be more experienced in dealing with any problems that may arise. Your Vet is like an M.D.... a general vet to handle the day to day minor stuff.... you really need to take her to a vet that has more experience and can do complicated surgery. It would be best for your baby.... Glad she pulled through today... I'll keep her in my prayers...:) |
Oh how frightening. I agree with KJC....you really need to take her to UT if you can. ..Or find another teaching hospital that you can go to. Definitely want to have a total workup done on her prior to attempting any further surgery. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. |
I only ready this thread today - and am so heartbroken. It must be torcherous for you to have to go through this and that beautiful little dog to have to suffer like this - its devastating. I will pray that everything goes well with you and your little yorkie. May God guide you and keep you both safe. |
Just read this, and wanted to let you know how sorry I am for what you and your baby. Sending lots of prayers and hugs your way. :( |
Trixie had her liver surgery a week ago on Thursday. Everything went great, and she played really rough about 2 days ago. We think the part they put in her liver may have slipped out of place, causing it to cut off the \'shunt\' in her liver..it was supposed to close slowly..if it closed too fast, it would kill her. She passed away around 9 this morning. Our family is having a rough time. But it was hard to watch her suffer the last few days. Please pray for our family.. |
Oh my god...I am so sorry to hear she passed after all you had done for her. Sending you hugs:hug: |
I am so sorry for your loss :( Trixie was so lucky to have such a happy life with you. |
I\'m so very sorry for your loss of Trixie. RIP Little One. Sending prayers for Trixie\'s family and friends. |
Oh my Gosh. I am so sorry that you lost your precious Trixie. She was so lucky to have you for a Mommy. Sending prayers for you and your family. |
