It brought back a LOT of memories and not my favorite ones of my little maltese baby Casper! |

Don't their bodies use the protein from the dead worms after the dewormer kills them? Just like a piece of meat... lol, sorry. I'd be totally grossed out. |

The ad asking "Could you have Parasites?" for Vaxa at the top of page freakes me out! Especially after seeing this whole discussion :), although I realize that's probably why it's popping up. Still creepy, though. |
well, I know a lot of you have been on pins and needles just wondering if the worms had gotten me yet or not.... sorry, this is probly going to be long... So, Sunday I did research on what is normally given for tapeworms. One of the most common is Praziquantel. My local TSC (Tractor Supply Center, told you it was a small rural town) had TradeWinds tapeworm tables for dogs and puppies which has this in it. I'm not sure you entirely grasped how freaked out I was... so I got it. Gave her the dose of 1 tablet Sunday, Monday was just too far away. Didn't see anything in her poop sunday night... Took her to vet this a.m. bright and early along with a couple of stool samples (one with wormie pieces and the other from this a.m.) - man I'm glad I'm not a vet tech... 2 day old dog poopie STINKS, glad I didn't have to look in it, not to mention it had WORMS! Anyway, after the head vet came out he said it was tapeworm but nothing else. But was suprised this a.m.'s poo didn't have but tiny particles in it. I told him I knew I was probly gonna be in trouble, but I showed him the over the counter meds I had bought. I told him, you just don't understand, I had WORMS from my dog's BUTT on MY lap. He laughed at me and told me what I had given her was fine and to give her another dose in 6 weeks. I told him he needed to counsel his younger vet that I had talked to saturday night. I told him had that vet told me he would meet me at the clinic after I had seen the worm on me and give me the medication, but it would be a $500 fee, I would have been there in 10 minutes. I told him he just didn't grasp the grossness and seriousness of the situation in my eyes!! :D:D:D Emergency or not, I would have been there!!! man, he missed a business opportunity! Anyway, he added Comfortis to her Sentinel. He said the flea med in Sentinel only causes the adult flea not to be able to reproduce. He also said cats and Terriers are the same in that when they have a flea they will bite and bite at it to get it off and then swallow them and the infected flea causes the tapeworms. I am going to have to do some research because I didn't think to ask him what the Comfortis does differently?? Even if it kills the flea if it bites the dog, wouldn't the dog still scratch or bite at the area? I have never seen a flea on her, but we do have squirrels in the back yard and I guess a flea can jump on them anywhere. Oh, and speaking of Chinese food and such, Sunday afternoon I was cleaning out the refrigerator.... had leftover spaghetti in there. Talk about turn your stomach!!! I couldn't even open it and wash the container.... I just threw the whole darn container spaghetti and all in the trash!!!!! Probly not going to fix spaghetti again for a LONG time.... ewwwww, ewwwwww, and more ewwwwww!!!! Thanks again everyone for their advice!!! |
Our vet gave us Comfortis as well. It was my understanding that this helps to kill the flees on the dog so there's less chance they'll eat an infected flea. |
Oh, we grasped how freaked out you were. I can definitely see you paying the $500 ER fee just to get the medicine right away! Glad things are getting back to normal for you. Though we joked about it - it's definitely not fun. Our vet would not give Lucy comfortis though because she is under 5 lbs. Hope she doesn't eat a flea!! Then you can laugh at me. |

See, snakes I can handle... you can see them... you can run or you can shoot them, or you can chop them in half with a hoe or shovel. I was raised on a farm so I'm not a completely silly squeamish "female". It's just that IT WAS WORMS!!!! AND IT WAS ON MY MADDIE'S POOP, AND IT WAS WRIGGLY, AND THEN ANOTHER ONE CAME OUT OF HER BUTT AND IT WAS ON ME, AND THAT IS JUST EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! But, on another note, I am happy to report that all evidence of wormies are gone. And no, no big gross worm or pieces of worm in her poop after the pill.. Thank goodness!!!:D:D:D:D |

glad all the wormies are gone --- so do you want us to send you some sour worm candy to eat? |
think I'll pass on the candy.... ha ha, throwing out spaghetti was about all I could handle. and tell DH what he has heard is right, things are bigger in TEXAS as evident by my backside and my mouth!!! :D:D after I have calmed down a bit, I have wondered why this really grossed me out as much as it did... I have come to the conclusion that I had not really accepted the fact that my Maddie was a d-o-g (spelling it cause I can't even SAY it!! ha ha). we call them our furbutts or furbabies and I guess really they are. but, if we are honest with ourselves, they really are still d-o-g-s. as evidence by eating gross things, rolling in stinky stuff, having WORMS come out their butts - well I guess if you consider pinworms our skinkids are just as gross!!! - but anyway, it was a little wake up call that even though I love her as much as I do.... she is still a d-o-g. just please, please, don't ever tell her I called her that!!!;) |
