OMG it's WORMS Please help. It's 8 p.m. where I live and a small town where there isn't an emergency vet clinic. There is a vet on call at my vet's office. I just took my Maddie out to poop, when she did there were 3 WORMS that were alive on it. Looked likes long grains of rice only flatter. I about to FREAK OUT!!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek: She takes Sentinal monthly. Do I need to get her on a wormer ASAP or can it wait until Monday a.m.?????? Please help I am seriously freaked out not to mention grossed out. Where do these worms even come from? She doesn't eat poo, only around other dogs when groomed, doesn't go to a dog park, only exposure to outside other than my fenced back yard (that another dog has never been in) is when we walk in the neighborhood.:eek::eek::eek: |
I recently took Taz to the vet for the same problem. Just go to your vet and tell them what you saw in his poop. They should give you some meds for it. 2 pills to be exact. He has tapeworms, and he most likely got it from digesting a flea. Hope this helps. |
you can breathe a sigh of relief because as far as i know whether hook, round, or tape worms it can wait until Monday. they will simply give a dewormer that will kill and help her pass all the worms. if it's coming out in the stool that's a good thing and the dewormer will help. puppies have worms all the time when they are born and it's nothing to run off to the ER about. so don't worry have a decent weekend. pick up all poop in the yard and house and spay a little bleach water on fecal areas or use surface cleaners in the house. go to the vet first thing Monday to get the meds an get rid of them. good luck it'll all be fine. wanted to add that all puppies can get worms from their mother at birth. worms can come from the ground even when fecal matter isn't present. i believe i read once that certain worms like hook or round can actually crawl into your feet somehow from contam. water and ground and travel through the body to your intestines. they reproduce and grow there. but still don't fret. worms are a fairly common and normal thing and are easily treated and removed. just clean up the messes and the yard. let us know how it goes on Monday. |
You might not want her to sleep in your bed, if that is where she normally sleeps. The worms can come out on their own, especially when the dog is still. |
Isn't Sentinol supposed to prevent worms? |
Take a stool sample with you when you go to see the vet. And yes, don't let her sleep in your bed and make sure everybody washes their hands after handling the pup. Good luck. |

ewww, ewww, and more ewww!!!!!!!!! thanks for everyone's quick responses. what is really freaking me out is that she is not a puppy. she is 2 1/2 years old. she was at the vet in April and had a fecal that came back clear. I have an older thread on here from May about a worm. There was what looked like a worm in her water bowl. I took it to the vet along with another stool sample. Stool sample came back clear. One vet who just looked at the "worm" in a clear bottle said it "looked" like a hookworm. HEAD vet at the clinic put the "worm" on a slide and cut it apart and said it was a fiber. Now its WORMS!!!!! Truly the "worm" in May didn't really look like these, it was longer and skinnier, these today were short and fatter and flatter on one end. EEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW At 2 1/2, and being on monthly Sentinel, isn't this odd??? I will report back on Monday what the vet says. I did take pictures of the poo with worms to show him. My gosh, I'm weird. |
I remember how grossed out I was when my little Maltese had worms as a puppy. Even though I didn't know that the worms would come out when they were still (Lizzie07 just confirmed my worst fears) . . I would NOT let him sleep in my bed until I knew they were gone. I was just too grossed out; worms just freak me out. Poor little guy didn't realize why he couldn't sleep in my bed for a few days; but as I remember . . it didn't take much to get rid of them. So I know how squicked out you are right now! Heck, I didn't even want to pet him for a few days and it's not like they were coming out his head! I laugh now but wasn't too happy at the time either. This too shall pass! Ha! |
Hoping it's a quick weekend until you can see your vet for the dewormer!!! Hope your lil one feels better soon:) Did the vet do a fecal before you began the Sentinal? |
gross! LOL sentinel does protect against intestinal parasites but not tape worms. it covers rounds, hooks, and whips. you can wait until monday to take a stool sample to the vet. make sure you pick up all the poop and clean everything really well. make sure your vacuuming every day to pick up anything that might have "slipped out". LOL if your too grossed out you can go to the er but keep in mind its going to be a lot more expensive then going to your regular DVM |
OMG 1 came out!!! ok, I'm know I'm seriously freaking out and probably sound really stupid, but I'm the person that NO ONE could believe would EVER had a d-o-g in her house, now I have a d-o-g with WORMS!!! so, my Maddie is laying in my lap and I can't even watch TV because I'm so busy watching her butt to make sure a worm doesn't come out, and lo and behold I look and THERE IS A WORM ON ME!!!!! that's it, I live in a small town and the nearest emegency vet clinic is probably 50 miles or more away, but my regular vet has a 24 hour answering service. so, I call and the lady connects me to the vet on call (when I told her what happened she was pretty freaked too so she connected me :D) I tell him the whole story and he told me I could go to our local TSC to purchase an over-the-counter de-wormer to give her tomorrow and then to bring her in monday a.m. I'm telling him worms are coming out of her BUTT and does it pose a risk to my family, he said not to worry about it. HMMMMMMM, I told him that's easy for him to say, he didn't have a worm that came out out a dog's BUTT on him!!! :D So for now, I am going to put an old towel on my lap and let her lay on that. I would rather that than have her lay on the furniture or rug on my tile and then a worm come out on that. At least this way I can wash the towel in HOT water tonight. Luckily for me, she sleeps in her plastic carry crate on my bed at night, so I will just wash her bed in hot water in the a.m. as well. Does anyone know how long a worm could survive once it "slips" out of her???? EWWWWWWWWWWW |

I would definitely have her sleeping in the crate and probably NOTon my bed tonight. |
Once the worm comes out, it dries up then looks like a grain of uncooked rice. I don't think they survive long once they are out because there is no host. The worms tend to come out when the dog is still which is most likely when they are sleeping. You'll probably see some on her bedding in the morning. This happened to me about a month ago and I rushed both pups to the vet even though only one had symptoms. Now I know even though its really gross, its not an emergency. Even though they are on a preventative, its a fluke that they ingest the one contaminated flea. Max was treated with Drontal Plus; 1 tablet and then 1 more tablet in exactly 3 weeks. |
they will do drontal or pancur. pancur is sprinkled on the food. there are other ones that also are liquid dewormers. it's ok i know it's disgusting, but just clean and clean and u'll make it to Monday. ewwwwwwwwww tho. gross. |

Do worms usually happen in puppies or can they happen in older dogs as well? I have never dealt with worms and curious. |

Best to take a fecal sample to vet, as different types of worms require different meds. I personally would use the over the counter meds. It is important to get the right stuff in the right dose for her weight. My pups have had tapeworms a couple times from licking fleas, and I think one pill from the vet wiped them out. I even was able to call my regular vet and they prescribed the pill without doing a fecal. As someone else said, they die and dry up quickly, so you might see hard little bits that look like rice where she sleeps. Relax, it's yucky, but not life threatening to her or anyone else, and is one of the easiest things to treat. Since they are carried by fleas, make sure she is on a flea prevention med. |

hope that helps. |

worms I am so sorry you are having this problem. I to had a fecal done on only one of my little ones. It was a physical. Rosie is 8 yrs old. The vet put her on pancur, This was about a month ago. The vet never told me to keep her off the bed or furniture.I had no idea that they come out while resting. yuck. Now my question is why didnt she put the rest of them on the meds as well. After reading this I am totally grossed out and I just went online to petmeds.com and ordered pancur for the rest of my group (5). I have not had fleas in a year and a half, since I fostered and one other foster Mom did have fleas and was so wonderful to share them with the rest of us. lol So that must mean that Rosie had them for a while. Unless she got them from the rescue when she was there for two weeks back in April. Well I am going to re treat Rosie and the rest of them as well. As I lay here with the whole group laying on my bed.yum! Well I guess it is to late now to put them down off the bed.Is the only way they get worms( WHIP WORMS ) is from flea eggs? That is what the vet called them. Thanks for the info. Brenda, Jackie,Sadie, Rosie,Julie, Lilly, and Romeo |

as I said, she is not a puppy, she is 2 1/2 years old and as prissy as she is, you would think she would know better than to have a WORM come out of her BUTT!!!! don't worry, the Vet is in for a lot of questions monday a.m. I have NEVER seen a flea on her, she scratches from time to time, but I have never found a flea and her hair is cut in a really short puppy cut right now for summer so as much time as she spends in my lap, I think I would have seen it (had no problem seeing a WORM). We have a pool in the backyard so spend a lot of time out there, I and one of my daughers are the sort that if there were fleas in the grass we would be bitten up from them. Not to say she couldn't have picked up a flea and the Sentinel kept it from multiplying, just saying we don't have a flea problem. So, yeah, lucky me that she finds the ONE flea that is infested and gives her the darn worms! Don't know why I wouldn't think I'd be so lucky..... I'm the one that has a skinkid to prove the pill isn't 100% effective!!! ;) Glad I can at least make someone smile... believe me, I AM NOT AMUSED AT ALL !!!! You all should have seen me in my chair with a big blue towel covering me (thought a white worm would show up good on a blue towel!!). Now I put brown towels down under her crate just in case the little beasties can crawl out of her bed, up the sides or out the front door of her carry crate and out and about into my bedroom!!!! Of course, as I was typing this, she comes in the spare bedroom where the computer is and jumps up on the bed and where does she decide to lay her little wormy butt???? On the folded throw at the end of the bed??? Oh heavens no.... she jumps up, turns her circles, and plops her little behind right on top of the pillows!!!:eek::eek: Ok, off to pull pillowcases off and into the washer........ scratching as I go....worms crawling all over me...... EEEWWWWWWWWWWWW |

"but tapeworms are actually a common thing and nothing to be concerned over" ha ha you sound like my vet sounded over the phone... as I told him, unless you have found one crawling on your stomach that just came out of your princess's little BUTT, you really don't know how concerned I am!!! :D j/k of course! so.... these tapeworms.... are they the same ones that if they get in a human's stomach they grow and grow and eat everything you eat and you lose weight????? hmmmmmmmm..........nawwwwwww.... probly not a good weight loss idea...... |

Op you gave me a great laugh tonight though. I hope you can kill those things quick lol. You are so funny. I hope you can sleep tonight too and no worm nightmares lol |
lol you are hilarious tonight. haha. i'm just trying not to frighten you. they are common in a vet hospital. NOT common for a dog to have like a million times. common as not ER type of thing. lol. i mean if you don't treat for fleas i guess you'd be in for a lifetime of possible reinvestations of tapeworms, but if ur treating for fleas u should be fine. she may get them again one day, maybe never again. just common enough not to worry about them causing damage over the weekend is all. i know it's gross and oh so not fun. and defin. not such a calm thing when you see one on your lap. i'd have jumped to the ceiling. |
oh you guys speaking of nightmares i have to share this. the other night dh went outside to the truck to get a notebook for his job. he didn't come in for awhile and then he ran in for a flashlight. i'm like what's wrong. he goes back out and i go out too. he tells me that he just killed a tarantula. i'm like WHERE omgosh. we go look in the grass and then i turn the light back to the driveway and there is a huge WOLF spider laying dead. of course we took pictures of the thing, if you want to see it PM me, i won't post it on here since some are aracnaphobic and it's not fun to see a pic. of something ur afraid of online. anyways had to share and dh made me laugh so hard cause he said a neighbor drove by and he was out in just his shorts bashing the "driveway" with an extended ice scraper. i'm sure they thought he was crazy.. but yea i had the heebie jeebies all night long. :S |

earlier, I had the bright idea to wash my Maddie's bed out of her crate. it is a rectangular shape bed with sides. As I flipped the bed inside out to wash, small "things" dropped onto the washer. I got a wet paper towel and wiped them up to look at. They were small tan hard "things" a little bigger than a flea and fatter, but not quite as big as a grain of rice. I even broke one in half with my fingernail (smart, huh?). Odd, I thought to myself, must have come out of her bed.... so, then I decide to get a wet papertowel and wipe out the inside of her crate while her bed was washing. Looked at the papertowel and see another 6 - 8 "things" along with some hair and dust (I know, I was amazed to find dust in my house too!) Now I read this and figure out that those little hard "things" were probably DRIED UP WORMS. THAT MEANS SHE HAS HAD THEM FOR AT LEAST SEVERAL DAYS :eek::eek: THAT MEANS THEY HAVE PROBABLY BEEN ON ME EVERY NIGHT!:eek::eek: (she sleeps on my lap before we go to bed) as I said earlier: ewwwwwww, ewwwwwww, and more ewwwwwww I am definately going to go have a glass of wine.....or the whole bottle...... goodnite everyone, and thanks for your input. If you read about anyone from Texas being carted off to the funny farm talking about worms all over them, it's probably me.... I may never eat rice again... |

Monday will be here soon and you can get your medication and get rid of those nasty things. I hear you on the rice; I felt the same way. |
I feel for you. I have 2 cats that are major hunters so I have dealt with worms. My first experience was my Lucy puking up a pile of live ones on my kitchen floor!!!!! It was like a horror movie. Anyway, now they get them all the time. Especially in the spring when the hunting is in full force. They get them from fleas and from eating rodents. I give them frontline for the fleas but I can't control the rodent hunting. Anyway, the small pieces (proglottids) you find on the bedding and sometimes attached to their fur on their back ends are pieces of the tapeworm that break off and are expelled through their butts. They look like cucumber seeds (never want to eat cucumbers again huh?!!) They are alive when they first come out and if they find a host, they will develop into a long tapeworm. I have 3 children and was totally freaked out by this. Most of the ones I've found are dried out and dead. If you google tapeworm you can read about/see pics of these. DON'T DO IT IF YOU'RE REALLY SQUEAMISH!!!It will just freak you out more. It's been about 2 years since my first experience and while it still grosses me out, I'm getting used to it. My vet gives us Drontal tablets and that takes care of it (until they ingest another) If my puppy gets one I will cry but at least I know what it is and that it can be treated. You'll get through it. However, I'm sure you'll be a constant "butt checker" like I am now!!!! |
We never had tapeworms with our little girl, but the first night we got our little boy, we discovered them while shaving him. We actually saw the worms crawling on his back. We looked it up online and found out they were tapeworms, and we put him in his crate next to the couch and I slept by him. The next morning, the towel we left in the crate was covered with them. Unfortunately, it was Sunday, and we had to wait till Monday to go to the vet, but it wasn't as bad Sunday. Monday came around and the vet gave us the de-worming pill and that took care of it really fast. He ended up getting them again a few weeks later, and we did another de-worming. Since then, he's been worm free for at least a year. And we have them on Sentinel and never miss, but as others have said, it doesn't protect against tapeworm. |
