Sorry, I have to throw this out. This was not a study on Coconut oil, as they stated they added 'cholesterol and Coconut oil' to to make a cholesterol-enriched atherogenic (artery-hardening) diet, and that could mean anything as they do not state any amounts. They could have added a cup of pure cholesterol and a drop of Coconut oil.

We know that adding cholesterol to a diet isn't good. I would be curious to see the results if they only added Coconut oil to a normal diet.

The worse effect on Beagles than on Greyhounds interests me and tells me too that different breeds of dogs may be affected differently.

As I have a natural curiosity to investigate anything that does not make sense to me, I will have bloodwork done on my dogs to see if any changes are evident.


I use both Alaskan Wild Salmon Oil and Coconut oil and/or Coconut Milk. And some benefits of Coconut oil:

Relieves stress on pancreas and enzyme systems of the body.
Reduces symptoms associated with pancreatitis.
Improves digestion and bowel function.

YOU ROCK can you look the study up as I have the reference number for it as this is why I stopped giving my dd coconut oil as she scared me and she does a ton of research this girl who posted it. I definitely notice a difference in dd since stopping it and I had 2 years I think of blood work on dd no RBC increase at all or cholesterol so derm and jean told me keep giving it but i was too scared and wow this past year was a nightmare so I added back probiotics separately by itself and she is a little better but she was much better on both so after blood work I will add back in coconut oil. I was giving a 1/4 tsp daily after food in am.

When I started my dogs on it, I gave them 1/16 tsp, and mixed it in with their food twice a day, and gradually increased it from there. Now, they get 1/4 tsp 2X / Day. Did you see on the benefits I posted, it gets rid of worms and giardia! I love this stuff. My 13 year old is bouncing around like a puppy! :D

yeah I know it is antibacterial and antifungal for sure as dd never had staph infections with all her allergies until i took her off this and probiotics - makes me so mad I stopped. The only thing i noticed is she did have some excretion to her skin at times but not sure if it was from that or her thyroid issue. Her coat was nice too and now it is not as nice :(

does your dog have IBD or any GI issues; i used to give ava coconut oil before but didn't help her. i am wondering if it works for ibd dogs. thanks

Was this while she was on Coconut oil? Was it her entire skin or in specific areas? The Coconut oil may help a thyroid problem.

it was her back the skin had a greasy layer and yes it was while on coconut oil and now she does not have it but skin is dryer than it was before.

I wanted to do kelp supplement as high in iodine when she was first diagnosed but jean said no bc of her allergies was not a good idea :(

One of mine has LS, and I had trouble getting her to gain weight, along with getting her on a diet to at least maintain and hopefully improve her liver function. And bc of these specific benefits of coconut oil:

And one has CT, so Coconut oil should help him also.

One has skin problems, and chronic ear problems which have improved since she has been taking the coconut oil in her diet and topically on her ears.

The fourth pup is on it for preventative measures.

And I also give it and use it topically on my 3 cats, and DH and I have started taking it, and using it topically. DH has very bad psoriasis and it's the only thing that has helped him, as he has tried just about everything (prescriptions) from his docs, of which nothing has helped.

for psoriasis and eczema has your hubby tried murphy's oil soap as i have read that works great too.

I have used coconut oil for hot spots for years now on dd and it is truly amazing how fast it heals her

many people and her vet recommended fish oil; so i ordered the nordic natural omega 3 pet;
i know reading up on coconut oil sounds really great and it is great; but i used to give it to her in the past and it didnt make any difference.
although her food now purina en contains coconut oil; so i dont think it will be a good idea to add more to her diet.
maybe i will just try the omega 3 for now.
so many things can get so overwhleming

that is why i say get the right diet first then go from there as if you try too many things you will not know what is or is not working. I do baby steps. I try something wait it out for a while then add one more then wait it out for any reaction etc.

How is it going with the EN?

so far so good; thank god.
she likes it and she's hungry all the time; but that is due to the prednisolone.
i started adding gastri-soothe (zinc-carnosine) yesterday and she likes that.
later i will be adding the omega-3 and then gastriplex.
i read extensively about zinc-carnosine and gastriplex; and the studies show that these products promote healing of the GI system.
i also asked about it to be sure "Gastriplex was formulated to help dogs with IBD and other digestive disorders. It has been on the market for more than 10 years and is very safe"

Splitting the dose in two, or decreasing it but still give it AM & PM may help this... if not... it may not be from the C. Oil. Any loose stools while on it?

I have some thoughts about this but need to do some more research...
